LSU baseball star Ethan Frey likely leaving LSU after third round draft selection

It was a busy night for LSU baseball as the first three rounds of the MLB Draft took place on Sunday night. Kade Anderson was the first Tiger off the board, going No. 3 overall to the Seattle Mariners. Pitchers Chase Shores and Anthony Eyanson were also picked. The only LSU hitter to come off the board was Ethan Frey. Entering the draft, some thought Frey had a chance to return to LSU for his senior season, but that appears unlikely now, as Frey was picked No. 95 overall by the Houston Astros. If an MLB org drafts a player in the first three rounds, it signals confidence in that player turning pro. Teams don't want to waste a premium draft slot on a player who will return to college. Frey was one of the SEC's best hitters in 2025 and a key piece of LSU's College World Series run. Frey finished the year with 13 home runs and a 1.061 OPS. He added 15 doubles and a triple. Frey stands at 6-foot-6. His power has elite upside and runs well for someone his size. The Astros have plenty of tools to work with. Frey's pick is a blow to LSU's 2026 lineup. Frey's return was always far from a given, but LSU had a chance to return a hitter with SEC player of the year potential. Here's what scouting report had to say about Frey: "One of the more imposing hitters in college baseball at 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, Frey is built to hit for power. He's strong and has a quick right-handed stroke to go with an affinity to driving the ball in the air, a combination that allows him to hit balls out of any part of the park. While he lacks a long track record, he's a patient hitter who has had success this year against both lefties and righties and all types of pitches." Frey served as LSU's designated hitter, but he's athletic enough to take up a position in the field. Look for the Astros to give Frey a chance in the outfield or at first base.

Rachel Riley: 'I'd rather swim with great white sharks than do Strictly again'

For Rachel Riley, after competing on Strictly Come Dancing in 2013, there are few things more daunting than being thrown around the floor by her now-husband, Pasha Kovalev, to the mercy of millions of viewers. Her courage is being put to the test, however, in ITV's new series Shark! Celebrity Infested Water – an unexpected gear change in reality TV. As it says on the tin, stars are chucked into the water with sharks of increasing size, eventually leading to the moment where they'll pluck up the bravery to come nose to nose with one of the world's most dangerous apex predators, a Tiger shark, without a cage. Speaking to Metro ahead of tonight's first episode, I can confirm Rachel remains fully-limbed and unscathed. She insists that confronting the animal notorious for striking more fear into humans than anything else is water off a duck's back after being scrutinised by Craig Revel Horwood on national television. 'If you asked me tomorrow to go swimming with great whites, I'd be there,' she says. 'If you asked me to do Strictly again, no way. 'The thing about Strictly is that the music comes on and we panic, whereas with the sharks you can take your time to get down. Rationally, you shouldn't be more scared of something that can eat you than dancing on telly. But we're not always rational, are we?' Tapping into the rationality of shark-wary viewers is the crux of Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters. The premise hasn't come out of nowhere, it's marking the 50th anniversary of Jaws – Stephen Spielberg's horror that's caused me to have many sudden panics in a swimming pool, let alone the sea. The truth is, sharks are relatively harmless. If you're confident enough to get in a car, you should be able to gleefully paddle in the sea when the road is by far more likely to kill you. Rachel is joined by a star-studded cast that includes Sir Lenny Henry, comedian Ross Noble, and Amandaland's Lucy Punch. They're mentored by leading shark experts, including Paul de Gelder – a former marine whose arm and leg were ripped off by a bull shark in 2009 but now devotes his life to protecting the species that almost killed him. He welcomes the cast onto the boat, proudly shows off his prosthetic limbs and tells the celebs they'll be starting their journey in the water with bull sharks. 'I was expecting swimming pools with starfish to start with,' admits Rachel. 'Pasha and I've been to the Galapagos before, and we saw a bright orange thing in the water, thinking someone had dropped a life jacket, but it was actually a sea lion bitten in half trying to get out of the water. 'Its flesh was so fluorescent it looked orange, and then this bull shark came and finished it off.' Being witness to a shark attack first-hand did nothing to deter Rachel from agreeing to take part, though – far from it. Of all the stars, the Countdown presenter is easily the most excited to be there – jealous, even, of her teammates whenever she was on land. 'I just had constant shark envy,' she says. 'Every time someone was in the water and we were waiting to go and there was a sighting of something, I was like, 'I want to be in the water!' 'There was one second where I even said it out loud, 'if Pasha could see me now, he'd be screaming at me to get out. I'm pushing my luck now.'' In the very first free swim of the process, the group paddles with eight-foot lemon sharks. Noble, among the calmest members of the pack, is actually bitten. As I mention this, Rachel laughs: 'It was funny at the time. We thought it was just a camera bump, and then you look at the footage, and no, it really was a bite.' 'I mean, he survived,' she smiles nonchalantly. And she's right, the shark's teeth barely puncture his wetsuit. Still, though, it's a reminder that one wrong move with a bigger animal and the damage could be far more serious – even deadly. Preparing to fly out to the Bahamas, Rachel even wrote a will. 'As soon as you have babies, you're supposed to have a will, so this was the proper impetus. Right at the start of this process, they told us we were building up to dive with Tiger sharks, which have been found with whole suits of armour in their stomach and that there had been a fatality in that area from Tiger sharks in the last year. So even though you've got all the precautions, they're still wild sharks.' The celebrity's levels of trepidation to be in the water with sharks varies. On one end of the spectrum, there's Rachel, who has no reservations to dive straight in, and on the other, you have Call The Midwife's Helen George, who hasn't even put her head under water in over 20 years out of sheer fear. Initially, it appears Helen is not cut out for free-swimming with sharks or even being near the water at all. Without giving too much away, her unshakable terror is the heart of the series, watching a woman discover she's much more capable than she gives herself credit for. It's a surprisingly moving watch. More Trending 'What's lovely about the show is we were a team and she's the strongest person I know,' says Rachel. 'She's had the biggest achievement out of all of us so we're all really proud of her, to have the strength of character and strength of mind to not only overcome getting your face in the water, but to go out in the open ocean, take your mask off underwater, she did so much.' Months after filming, Rachel is still clearly giddy with excitement. Only time will tell if she managed to come up and close to a Tiger shark, but the experience has definitely changed her. 'I've got the bug,' she says. I want to see orcas and manta rays next. I've always wanted to see manta rays, it's like seeing aliens when you're going underwater. I just definitely want to do more diving.' View More » Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters airs tonight at 9pm on ITV. Got a story? West Coast coach Andrew McQualter doubles down on Jack Graham defence after homophobic slur

West Coast coach Andrew McQualter has doubled down on his defence of midfielder Jack Graham after the former Tiger was handed a four-game suspension for using a single-word homophobic slur. It comes as Giants coach Adam Kingsley revealed Graham had reached out to him to apologise, as well as the affected player. Graham self-reported the incident after the Eagles' clash with Greater Western Sydney in round 17 and was handed a suspension just hours before West Coast played Port Adelaide on Sunday. During the post-match press conference in the wake of West Coast's 26-point loss, Adelaide McQualter said he and the club would continue supporting Graham and ensuring he underwent education. McQualter then doubled down on Monday, telling 7NEWS the act was out of character for Graham and that they had accepted the four-week ban as an appropriate punishment. 'We were all surprised and disappointed that it happened,' he said. 'It's out of character for Jack, but it's a mistake that he's made. He owned his mistake, and he'll cop the punishment that comes with it. 'Jack will do some education, which will be critical for him. It's ongoing with our whole club, and we'll speak to Jack about what else he can do to help educate others and make sure this doesn't happen again.' The Eagles' coach and Graham have a long relationship that stretches back to the pair's days at Richmond, before both moved west during the 2025 off-season. When asked by AFL360 whether the incident would affect Graham's chances of a leadership role at his new side, McQualter said one error didn't cross out his 'terrific' attributes. 'I think Jack made a really bad error, but I don't think we should judge a person on just one mistake. He's a terrific leader,' he said. 'It was an out-of-character error, and he'll cop a severe punishment for it, and hopefully, he's part of the solution going forward and continues to educate others.' Kingsley added he and the Giants were satisfied by the process, despite a delayed ruling and punishment. 'I think the process that unfolded was to wait for an official report to be made by the umpire or match day official, and when that wasn't lodged, then I think the appropriate course of action was taken and the AFL were alerted,' he said on AFL360. 'Then the process sort of unfolded from that. We were satisfied with the process and outcome. 'Jack reached out to both myself and the player involved to apologise so I thought that was good of both Jack and the West Coast Eagles, you know, very much appreciated. 'We all know there's no place for that in our game, and people make mistakes, and it's important to educate and forgive.' McQualter has not been the only one to come out in defence of the burly midfielder, with co-captain Liam Duggan labelling the concerning incident a 'slip of the tongue'. 'We spoke about it this morning, all the details were finalised. Jack owned it completely; he was able to get up in front of the boys and just let everyone know what was going on,' Duggan told The West Australian on Sunday. 'He's very remorseful, he's owned the mistake that he made. He's in our leadership group, he's a great character. 'Slip of the tongue, and we know he's learnt his lesson well and truly. 'We'll miss Jack for three more games, but we'll completely stick behind him.'

Auburn's Ike Irish selected No. 19 overall by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2025 MLB draft

Irish is the latest Tiger to be taken in the first round of the MLB draft, and the first since Tanner Burns was taken No. 36 overall in 2020. It was long suspected that Auburn iron man Ike Irish would be selected in the first round of the 2025 MLB draft. Sunday, those suspicions were realized as the Baltimore Orioles selected Irish with the No. 19 overall pick in Sunday's draft, which is taking place at Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia, site of the 2025 MLB All-Star Game. Irish's ability to attack opposing pitching, as well as his versatility in the field, made him attractive to Major League Baseball franchises. In three season's at Auburn, Irish hit 39 home runs and sent 167 runs home. He set many personal records last season as a junior by hitting 19 home runs, logging 78 hits, and hitting .364. He played a variety of positions during his time at Auburn, including right field, left field, first base, and catcher. He will likely be used as a catcher in the Orioles' organization should he elect to turn pro. Irish becomes the 10th first-round selection that Auburn has produced. By being selected No. 19 overall, Irish joins elite company with the likes of Gregg Olson, Frank Thomas, Gabe Gross, Casey Mize, and Tanner Burns. He becomes the first Tiger taken in the first round since Burns was selected by the Cleveland Guardians at No. 36 overall in 2020, and is the 10th Tiger to be selected by the Baltimore Orioles, the first since Chase Allsup was taken by the O's in the fourth round of last year's draft. The MLB draft continues into Monday. Rounds 1-3 will take place Sunday while rounds 4-20 will occur Monday. Tigers Pushed To Steal $66 Million Yankees Trade Target In Huge Deal

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Yankees have been connected to infielder Eugenio Suárez ahead of the trade deadline for a few weeks now. The fit makes perfect sense. New York needs a slugger, and the Arizona Diamondbacks will likely look to deal away their expiring star. But the Yankees aren't the only team that'll have interest in Suárez in the coming weeks. In fact, there will likely be five or six teams, at least, with some interest in poaching the slugger from Arizona. FanSided's Zachary Rotman recently suggested the Detroit Tigers could swoop in and trade for Suárez right out from under the Yankees' nose. PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JULY 03: Eugenio Suarez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks gets ready in the batters box against the San Francisco Giants at Chase Field on July 03, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona. PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JULY 03: Eugenio Suarez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks gets ready in the batters box against the San Francisco Giants at Chase Field on July 03, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona."The Detroit Tigers have the best record in the majors and are a team that has as good of a chance as any to get to the World Series, but the Yankees might be their biggest threat in the American League," Rotman wrote. "Acquiring Suarez would not only take away a perfect Yankees fit, but it'd make the Tigers that much better. "Suarez, once a Tiger himself, could give the Tigers another big right-handed bat they could use. The Tigers have several potent left-handed sluggers like Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter, Zach McKinstry, and Colt Keith, but outside of Gleyber Torres and Spencer Torkelson, who are their big righties? Suarez would give their lineup more balance and a needed injection of power." The Tigers make a lot of sense as a fit for Suárez. Detroit needs a third baseman this season, and a reunion with its former slugger would add some much-needed pop to the lineup. Detroit is one of the best teams in baseball. If it can land a deal for a star like Suárez, the Tigers could separate themselves at the top of the American League. More MLB: Astros Listed As Landing Spot In Potential Trade For $45 Million Ace
