Non-Profit and Co-op Homes: The Way for Ontario to Build Its Way Out of the Housing Crisis
New modeling from United Way Greater Toronto and CHF Canada shows the scale of housing need with a practical plan to meet it through non-profit and co-op housing investment TORONTO, Aug. 12, 2025 /CNW/ - As housing costs soar and new builds stall, a report released today by United Way Greater Toronto (UWGT) and the Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada (CHF Canada) outlines a costed, delivery-ready plan to tackle Ontario's deepening housing crisis – and build the housing that people actually need. The report, Built for Good, identifies what it would take to transform Ontario's housing system, with ten, five and two-year targets, and investment estimates grounded in reality. For example, a $16.7 billion investment over two years would jumpstart a province-wide affordable housing strategy, led by the co-op and non-profit housing providers whose mission is long-term affordability for low- and moderate- and middle-income households. On par with other major infrastructure commitments, the investment would create stable homes for thousands while generating jobs and economic activity across the province and relieving pressure on public systems like healthcare and emergency shelters. "Ontario's protracted housing crisis continues to rob our communities of potential and prosperity, and we've identified a new roadmap for getting out of this," said Heather McDonald, President and CEO of United Way Greater Toronto. " Built for Good opens the door to opportunities for real progress by focusing on non-profit partners and the right investment, so we can build and protect the deeply affordable homes people need. This benefits all Ontarians, no matter where they find themselves on the housing continuum." "Ontario's housing crisis demands bold, proven solutions," said Tim Ross, CEO, Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada, Ontario Region. "The co-op housing sector is ready and able to deliver affordable homes that strengthen communities. With an existing pipeline of co-op projects across the province, we can build quickly, create good construction jobs, and ensure public dollars result in homes that stay affordable for generations. The Built for Good report lays out both the need and a clear path to deliver more homes that meaningfully address the housing crisis." The province's goal of 1.5 million new homes by 2031 includes all types of housing — but without targeted investment, the most affordable options will continue to fall behind. Housing crisis by the numbers: Nearly 400,000 households will need housing support by 2030 through new builds, rental supports and preserving community housing Over 55,000 affordable homes are at risk of being lost without investment More than 80,000 Ontarians experienced homelessness in the past year Ontario lost 120,000 affordable rental units between 2006 and 2021 Built for Good's two-year plan would: Build 15,150 new deeply affordable homes Provide rental assistance to 170,000 low-income households Develop 8,250 moderately affordable homes Preserve and repair 65,000 existing affordable homes The report urges all levels of government to treat affordable housing as critical infrastructure and commit to a province-wide plan to scale non-market housing. Many projects are ready to go, they just need funding to break ground. UWGT and partners will be engaging government and community stakeholders across Ontario in the weeks ahead. Merrick Watts reveals the moment he and Tim Ross lost $1million for Nova: 'It was a big deal'
Merrick Watts has opened up about the moment he and his former co-host Tim Ross lost the Nova network $1million. The 51-year-old revealed on the Friendlyjordies Podcas t, he and Rosso had been asked to promote McDonald's El Maco range live on air early in their career but things didn't go to plan. After introducing the range, the radio duo joked it 'was the blandest food you would ever have' and their bosses weren't impressed. 'That's what we refer to as the El Maco incident and no one ever brings that up but Rosso and I know about it,' Merrick explained. 'We really upset the guys. Part of the quote was about "the geniuses at McDonald's have done it again... the blandest food you've ever had" and I was so dumb and I was laughing so much. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'And must have doubled down and said something about the shaker fries. We got off air and it was a big deal, I think we lost them $1million.' Merrick and Rosso were best known for their radio shows on Triple J, Nova, and Triple M, but the comedy duo shocked their listeners when they parted ways in 2009 after over a decade together. Last year, Merrick spoke about his 'brutal' split with his longtime comedy partner. 'Rosso and I fractured, we split up at the end of 2009. It was brutal, it was tough. It's not really something I talk about a lot…but it was really devastating at the time,' he told SAS Australia host Ant Middleton on his podcast Head Game. 'I was focused on wanting to follow a certain trajectory that I felt innately was the right way to go and that was probably in conflict to the way we were doing things and the way we were working together.' The comedian said he felt the collaboration between himself and his partner had run its course at the time. 'I think we just exhausted ourselves as a unit and we'd done everything, we'd even lived together, and then I got my own family and got different priorities,' he claimed. Ant suggested that Watts' change in priorities was likely due to the arrival of his first son, Wolfe, in 2009. 'I kind of wanted to forge my own identity…which I thought would be a lot easier than what it was,' Watts added. The podcast interview wasn't the first time Watts encountered Ant, as the pair first met on SAS Australia in 2020. Watts said Middleton helped him achieve 'the best physical and mental state I've been in in my entire life'. Speaking candidly at the time, he said he struggled with anxiety and depression before making the appearance on the gruelling Channel Seven series. The father-of-two said he had been in the 'worst mental state' of his life, and not even a psychologist or 10-week meditation course could help. 'I felt like I was chipping away,' Watts said during an interview with Nova's Fitzy and Wippa. 'I did all the right things, I spoke to a psychologist, I spoke to my doctor, I did a 10-week meditation course. Nothing was working. I know that what I needed was to rebuild my confidence.' Watts said he knew that going on SAS Australia would help him feel more confident. 'When I'm confident I'm very, very capable. When I'm not confident I go back into my shell... I knew that just the process of getting ready for SAS Australia would be enough to rebuild my confidence and I was right,' he explained. 'I look at myself, a year ago and when I signed up for this show I was in the worst mental state I've ever been in. I look at myself a year later and I'm in the best physical and mental state I've been in in my entire life.' He finished: 'It's been extraordinarily good for my mind and my body.'

Comedian and design nerd Tim Ross shares his travel hacks
Don't miss out on the headlines from Lifestyle. Followed categories will be added to My News. Comedian and design enthusiast Tim Ross knows how to choose the right seat, but has zero advice about loyalty schemes. I travel to… Spend time with my family but I also love travelling for work, because it almost always involves my passion for architecture and design. Last year it was Great Britain, Denmark and New Zealand. Over the years, I've visited some incredible buildings but also performed in places like Trellick Tower, a heritage-listed Brutalist high-rise in West London. It's not just the architecture but the people – I've met so many people all over the world through design and that's one of life's great joys. I plan the trip… Myself. But nobody gets a date wrong in a hotel like me. I book a lot but if it's a family holiday, my wife, Michelle, just seems to know the places to go and has a knack for finding the best hotels. She is good at taking charge on where we are going which means I don't have to make decisions and I really like that. For international travel I always use – I've been using them for 10 years and they are the bomb. Inside my carry-on you'll find… A small plastic bag with hair product in it. My tubs always get confiscated, so I put enough for the flight there and back in the bag. If I have a shower during a stopover there's nothing worse than getting to your final destination with fluffy hair. I pack my suitcase… Really well at the start and it all goes out the window after the first hotel. Then it's all stuffed in like a complete mess. In my first two years of touring and flying in the late 1990s, I used a plastic bag for a toiletries bag. I think that's a good insight into my mind and packing style. I like to get to the airport… Early, because I'm often travelling with a lot of equipment for filming or performing live. That can take a while; I'm always loitering around oversized luggage with huge bags. As soon as I check in, I… Head to the lounge, have a cup of tea and refrain from posting a photo of my boarding pass. My favourite type of travel companion is… I used to quite enjoy multiple beverages on the plane, so someone to drink with was always right up there, but more recently I've been content travelling alone. On the plane I dress… As I always do. I will never wear a tracksuit on a plane, I think that's admitting that it's hard to fly. If you dress like normal, you feel normal. I'm a points person but… I wish I was all over what to do with my points but it seems like you need a degree to work out how to use them. I accumulate them like mad and then can't work out when to use them. I am not loyal to one airline because… I like to mix it up to keep them on their toes and enjoy the differences. My preferred plane meal is… Pasta is always the safest. I never eat the bread rolls but I do eat the ice creams when they come around. My best tip for beating jet lag is… Walk as soon as you get there and stay up as late as you can that night, but if you really need to nap, you must nap. The plane seat I always choose in economy is… I'll take a window seat when I can, as far away from the bathroom as possible. I was on a flight to New Zealand years ago and after the movie every time the bathroom door opened we got a big whiff. I actually ended up using the external lock that the flight crew use to open the bathroom in an emergency to shut the door (when it was empty) to get a reprieve from the smell. I save money when travelling… I've stopped drinking so that's been quite the saver. The destination I think is the best bang for your buck is… New Zealand is very well priced. I always get travel insurance… Because I don't want to be in a hospital in Turkey for the rest of my life and then have to pay it off by washing sheets in their boiler room.
