Motha leader's post on Bengalis sparks row in Tripura

Agartala: A social media post by TIPRA Motha leader David Murasing accusing the Bengali community of violence and discrimination against the indigenous Tiprasa people has ignited a political storm in the state. CPM and Congress have criticized the ruling coalition, accusing it of fostering ethnic divisions and undermining the longstanding unity between tribal and non-tribal communities. Despite the uproar, BJP has refrained from commenting, urging the public to avoid confusion over social media expressions. TIPRA Motha is yet to issue a clarification, and its leaders have remained silent on the controversy. Meanwhile, Amra Bangalee, a non-tribal platform in Tripura, has demanded the arrest of Murasing for his alleged incendiary remarks. Police are monitoring the situation but have not registered a case. A senior police official said, "The govt would not allow any attempt at communal or ethnic hatred. Police will take necessary steps to maintain peace and harmony." Murasing's post, now viral, alleges that Bengali men have committed crimes against Tiprasa women and accuses the Bengali community of economic dominance and cultural exploitation. The post concludes with a provocative question challenging the notion of communalism. The inflammatory content has drawn widespread condemnation from civil society groups, youth forums, and political observers, who warn that such rhetoric threatens Tripura's communal harmony. CPM state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury and Congress president Asish Kr Saha have demanded immediate legal action against Murasing, questioning the police's inaction compared to swift responses in other cases of social media criticism. Saha further accused the BJP-led govt of engaging in appeasement politics to maintain power, citing recent incidents of violence involving TIPRA Motha supporters and the lack of arrests despite specific complaints. Amid call for Bihar-style SIR in Tripura, Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma meets Amit Shah in Delhi

TIPRA Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Friday to discuss the ongoing process to implement the tripartite Tiprasa Accord signed between the Centre, the state governments of Tripura and Mizoram, and the Tipra Motha last year. 'Had a very good meeting with Home Minister Shri Amit Shah and discussed the implementation of the Tiprasa Accord for the people of our state. He assured all of us that he will personally ensure that the government of India's commitment is upheld towards the Tiprasa people,' Debbarma said. He did not reveal details of the meeting, but said it ended with positive assurances. The Tiprasa Accord was signed to find amicable solutions to socio-cultural, educational and administrative problems faced by tribals in Tripura. A TIPRA Motha delegation recently met the Election Commission of India and BJP chief J P Nadda in New Delhi to push for implementing a Bihar-style Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in the state. Attack on BJP supporters BJP supporters were attacked at Jampuijala in Tripura's Sepahijala district on Thursday. Though the attackers were not identified, BJP state tribal leader Bipin Debbarma made a veiled reference to the TIPRA Motha, asking why the BJP could not hold political events inside the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council areas. The TIPRA Motha is in power in the tribal council. The incident follows a recent attack on BJP activists in Khwai district last week when a group of TIPRA Motha supporters allegedly attacked people listening to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Mann ki Baat broadcast at a community event at Asharambari. At the time, Chief Minister Manik Saha had said that his government would not tolerate a culture of political violence, adding that anyone found liable would be dealt with strongly as per law. Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma had condemned the incident and urged his party workers to shun violence and stay united to show strength. He took to social media again on Friday, and without naming anyone, wrote, 'When people resort to intimidation to resolve or settle differences be it personal, religious or political then it pains me. Can we fight less and figure out how to unite and keep our borders safe? What party or politics will we all do, if our constitutional rights and our children's future is not secure? Everyday some one wants our thansa broken, don't allow them to destroy your children's tomorrow by breaking our unity today. Embrace love over hate.'

Tripura Allies BJP And Tipra Motha Workers Clash During Mann Ki Baat Broadcast

Guwahati: In a major political development in Tripura, members of the BJP and its key ally Tipra Motha clashed on Sunday at an area where BJP supporters claimed to have assembled to listen to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's monthly radio broadcast Mann Ki Baat. The police said they have filed a case following the clash that broke out in Khowai district. Political analysts said the incident indicated the growing strain in the relationship between the two allies in Tripura. "I have no idea, but local people know who attacked first. They know the culprits as well, so they filed a police case. The police will take strong action and arrest the suspects," Triprua Chief Minister Manik Saha told reporters. According to police sources, some 30 BJP functionaries and their supporters were assembled at a house in the district's Asharambari assembly constituency to listen to Mann Ki Baat. A large group of Tipra Motha workers and supporters also reached the place. The clash broke out after that. The immediate cause is not known. Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Manikya Debburman in a recorded video posted on social media confirmed the clash happened. "We don't want any political violence in Tripura. If we the Tiprasa still keep fighting for the sake of a political flag, one day we will be left with no land. The BJP should also be careful. Many CPI(M) supporters are either in BJP or Motha and indulging in all these," he said. Eight motorcycles and two cars were damaged in the clash. A large number of police personnel have been posted in the area. Tension is still high, sources said.

‘Bangladesh was never a friend, all must come together to fight illegal immigration': Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore to non-tribals

In an apparent bid to reach out to non-tribals, especially Bengalis who form nearly 70 per cent of Tripura's population, Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma Friday said all residents of the state should come together to combat illegal migration. 'I want to tell something to the people of Tripura that Bangladesh was never our friend. In the 80s, 90s, early 2000s… our Tiprasa youths were invited and were provided with arms, camps… by whom? Bangladesh… Today, Bangladesh is fomenting anti-India sentiments since the departure of Sheikh Hasina… I expect all of you, not just Tiprasa but everyone, to come together and fight against illegal migration,' Debbarma said in an audio message. He further alleged that illegal migrants from Bangladesh change their names to get Aadhaar cards and then settle not just in Tripura but also in other states like Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, etc. 'When I am speaking against illegal Bangladeshis, I am not speaking against you (non-tribals). I am speaking against those who enter India and try to weaken our country. Tiprasa alone can't fight this battle; I need your help… We can do this only when we set aside our personal differences and go ahead… This is not a fight for politics. This is the fight to save our next generation,' the Tipra Motha founder said. A few days ago, Debbarma had urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to follow the Bihar model of revision of electoral rolls in the Northeast, especially Tripura. He also said the party would seek a meeting with ECI officials in Delhi to discuss the matter. Citing reports of a popular TV channel, Debbarma said the ECI conducted a local survey in Bihar and came to know that many illegal migrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar, among others, have become voters. 'The same exercise should be conducted in Northeast India… I fail to understand why Bihar is important and the Northeast is not for ECI. Aren't we also children of India? Time for Tipra Motha MLAs to write to EC to do the same here. I request all our northeastern brothers and sisters to put the same pressure on your regional parties to do the same!' Debbarma wrote on his social media page.
