Single hand can't clap, says SC, gives interim bail to rape accused
Supreme Court NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday gave interim bail to a 23-year-old accused of raping a 40-year-old, noting that charges had not been framed even though he had been in jail for nine months. In scathing comments, a bench comprising Justices B V Nagarathna and Satish Chandra Sharma also asked how Delhi Police could file a rape case against the man, a social media influencer, when the woman had gone voluntarily with him. "A single hand can't clap. On what basis have you filed case under Section 376 of IPC. She is not a baby. The woman is 40 years old. They have gone together to Jammu. Why have you invoked 376. This lady goes to Jammu seven times and the husband is not bothered," the bench observed. It directed that the accused be produced before the trial court and granted interim bail subject to terms and conditions. According to the police complaint, the woman first came into contact with him in 2021 through social media while seeking a social media influencer to promote her clothing brand. During initial interactions, the accused allegedly requested an iPhone to enhance content creation, which she arranged through an authorised Apple Store in Jammu. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Data center innovation: Titanium improves workload performance - Google Cloud: Future of Infrastructure CIO | Google Cloud, AMD Undo However, their professional relationship soured after the accused attempted to resell the device. In December 2021, the man visited the woman at her house in Noida to return the Rs 20,000. He subsequently persuaded her to travel for a brand shoot in Connaught Place. During the journey, the accused allegedly gave her sweets laced with intoxicants and she lost consciousness. Contrary to assurances that she would be taken to Hindu Rao Hospital, the man allegedly took her to a secluded area, sexually assaulted her, stole money from her purse, and captured her nude photographs. Thereafter, the woman was allegedly coerced into travelling to Jammu where she was subjected to continued sexual abuse, extortion, and threats over a two-and-a-half-year period, according to the complaint.

Trade trap: Cybercrooks con Bengaluru doctor of Rs 1.9 crore
Bengaluru: Lured by the promise of high returns every day, a 65-year-old doctor followed the instructions of some cybercrooks and lost close to Rs 1.9 crore recently. He realised the folly only when the fraudsters claimed that Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) blocked his account and asked him to pay Rs 10 lakh more to allow him to withdraw the money. According to the complaint filed by Dr Richard (name changed), a resident of Banasawadi, with the East CEN Crime police station on May 24, the fraud occurred between April 4 and May 19. The fraudsters contacted him via WhatsApp from 9648745586 in April, claiming they were from 'Upstox Share Marketing Company'. Claiming they're dealing with share market trading, they promised profits every day. The sender introduced herself as Divyangana Thorat and when Richard told them he didn't have much knowledge of trading, she offered guidance. Soon, he was added to a WhatsApp group with hundreds of members. The group had numbers 9648745586, 8452082403, and 7381370290 as admins. They claimed the company was based in Mumbai and provided the links support@ He was also communicated with and guided by a person, Kapil Jaikalyani, with mobile numbers 8290620730 and 7304738609. After providing online instructions, Richard was asked to open an account using the links and participate in stock brokerage through an app. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Data center innovation: Titanium improves workload performance - Google Cloud: Future of Infrastructure CIO | Google Cloud, AMD Undo They also provided the customer care number 7737824947 to be contacted whenever he needed help. He was then added to another WhatsApp group named 'MY LOVE-95'. A person named Easwaran sent him messages about the investments to be made in trading. The members of the group started posting messages, including screenshots of their investments and the amounts credited to their accounts. Richard was asked to register for an institutional account, and invest through different bank accounts. He tested with small investments and made profit. Thereafter, he started transferring huge amounts to the different bank accounts provided by them. Every time he transferred money, the gang showed the total profit earned by him in the balance sheet of a fake portal. After investing about Rs 1.3 crore in 12 different transactions, Richard wanted to withdraw the funds, but he was not able to. When he contacted them to know the reason, he was asked to pay a commission of Rs 32 lakh, and only then could he withdraw money. Richard followed their instructions, and even after transferring the money, he was not able to withdraw. The fraudsters then asked him to pay the income tax of Rs 26.5 lakh, and he obliged. After paying all the dues claimed by the fraudsters, he tried withdrawing, but in vain. They insisted he pay Rs 35 lakh more, citing SEBI froze his account and he had to pay money to unfreeze it. A worried Richard bargained and agreed to pay Rs 25 lakh. When he transferred the money, the fraudsters told him that SEBI did not accept Rs 25 lakh and demanded the remaining Rs 10 lakh. On complaining about it, the fraudsters threatened him with legal action. A case has been registered under the Information Technology Act and BNS section 318 (cheating). Measures are being taken to freeze the bank accounts of the cybercrooks. "We have been creating awareness through social media and public meetings about different types of frauds, including the trending trading scam. But people still fall prey to it to make quick money," a senior officer said.

Assam unveils Rs 25,000 crore plan to push electronics manufacturing
The Assam government Monday unveiled a Rs 25,000-crore scheme to boost electronics manufacturing in the state with a major share earmarked for incentivising component makers, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. Speaking to ET, Sarma also said Assam—picked by Tata Electronics for setting up a Rs 27,000 crore chip assembly and test plant—will give 60% incentive to component makers beyond the Union government grant. Incentive will be enhanced depending on the investment case. The Tata facility in Jagiroad, Assam, is expected to start operations by March-April next year, Sarma said, adding that the state government is also building a Ratan Tata Electronics City. Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Data center innovation: Titanium improves workload performance - Google Cloud: Future of Infrastructure CIO | Google Cloud, AMD Undo 'Tata project has opened our eyes, and we realised that we have an advantage in electronics, and other related areas. So, we have quickly come out with the policy on electronics component manufacturing following the central government initiative. Now we are hoping that we will be able to do something more,' he said. The state government scheme offers production-linked incentives as well as capital subsidy. Discover the stories of your interest Blockchain 5 Stories Cyber-safety 7 Stories Fintech 9 Stories E-comm 9 Stories ML 8 Stories Edtech 6 Stories Highlighting that Assam offers more fiscal benefits than other states, he said this will allow industries to avail multiple schemes. Benefits include the Union government's scheme, Assam's own incentives, as well as the Centre's 'Unnati' benefits package for the Northeast that includes interest subvention, and power and tariff incentives. 'We are ready to negotiate more if we get a very good proposal,' Sarma said. This March, the Union cabinet had approved a Rs 23,000 crore programme to further bolster the country's electronics manufacturing supply chain . The Electronics Component Manufacturing (ECM) Scheme—spanning six years—is expected to generate investments worth Rs 60,000 crore. The scheme would seek to increase domestic value addition and integrate local companies with global value chains. This is just the beginning, Sharma noted after meeting electronics industry leaders in New Delhi. The chief minister is preparing to hold similar industry meetings in Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai over the next three months to gauge interest from companies. On tariff uncertainties sparked by the Trump administration, Sarma said this phase will pass soon as India's discussions on a free trade agreement (FTA) with the US are progressing well. States are ready to take advantage of any FTA, he added. Sharma emphasised that setting up of the Tata Electronics plant in Assam is a 'natural advantage' for the state. 'Whatever (components) Tata requires, or whatever can go along with be able to realise more and more where Assam fits into (this) but it is a huge area,' he said, adding chip requirements for the local and global markets will become clear by next year when India's existing facilities become operational. He expressed the hope that many youngsters who migrated to other states for work will return to Assam as new industries open. 'We were producing human resources, but not for us,' Sarma said. 'When the industry started to materialise, and they have actually started working, we realised that there is a lot of manpower in Assam spreading across various states - in Tamil Nadu, in Karnataka. We realised that we have huge potential.'

Electoral Commission Orders Partial Recount in Goldstein, Rejects Full Review
The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has announced it will conduct a partial recount in the Victorian seat of Goldstein, after Liberal candidate Tim Wilson emerged 260 votes ahead of incumbent independent MP Zoe Daniel. Daniel had formally requested a full recount, but the AEC declined, citing the rigour and scrutiny already applied during the distribution of preferences. 'The AEC is not undertaking a full recount, which would include repeating the just completed distribution of preferences. We are satisfied that there was a very high degree of rigour throughout the distribution of preferences process,' the commission said in a statement. However, it acknowledged that some corrections were made in the final stages of preference distribution. As a result, the AEC deemed it 'reasonable and appropriate' to re-examine first-preference ballots for Daniel and Wilson, as well as all informal votes. The recount will begin on May 28 and is expected to take up to four days. Daniel Responds to AEC Decision Daniel acknowledged the AEC's decision in a brief statement. Related Stories 5/24/2025 5/7/2025 'I'd like to thank my scrutineers and AEC staff for their diligence and dedication to the democratic process. I will be making no further comment until the process is complete,' she said. The result is a blow to Daniel, who had celebrated an apparent victory on election night to the sound of Sia's 'Titanium,' only for the tide to turn days later. Daniel's early lead evaporated as thousands of postal votes heavily favoured Wilson, pushing him into a winning position. Goldstein Marks a High-Profile Setback for Climate 200 The contest for Goldstein has been one of the most watched races of the 2025 election, given its significance in the rise of the Climate 200-backed 'Teal' independents. Daniel's 2022 victory over Wilson was a landmark moment for the movement, as she flipped the once-safe Liberal seat. Climate 200 invested over $500,000 in Daniel's re-election bid, underscoring the importance of Goldstein to the group's campaign. Wilson's apparent return to parliament now marks the first time a Liberal candidate has reclaimed a seat from a Climate 200-backed independent. While the final result in Goldstein remains pending, AEC is carrying out a full recount in Sydney's closely contested Bradfield seat. The race is extremely tight, with Liberal candidate Gisele Kapterian leading independent Nicolette Boele by just eight votes after the final distribution of preferences. Under AEC rules, any margin under 100 votes triggers a full recount. Boele was provisionally declared the winner by 40 votes.

Ford Territory gets the feminine vote as a comfortable daily ride
At a price point of over R700 000, the Titanium has its hands full with Chinese rivals. There is no denying that Ford South Africa have been short on model derivatives, especially in the most popular segment of the lot, the SUV space. It has been mostly up to the Everest to fly the flag with Puma not quite hitting the mark. The arrival of new Ford Territory, however, last year could not have come at a better time. And to offer us a little reminder of what their mid-size SUV offers, Ford dropped off a top-of-the-range Titanium spec Territory with strict instructions that it is for my wife to drive and for her to offer a lifestyle opinion of what it is like living with their new SUV on a daily basis. My wife thought it looked pretty good, but she did comment that it looked a lot like the other Chinese SUVs. Which it does, so I had to tell her that despite the Ford Territory wearing a 'true blue' badge, it is in fact very much a Chinese produced and sourced vehicle. This didn't bother her one bit, and I don't think it will many other potential buyers either. ALSO READ: Ford Territory perfect companion to escape from Jozi for a weekend Electric tailgate works wonders Jumping to the interior, she immediately commented on what she felt was a decent amount of space for the humans and her seemingly endless amount of cargo she drags to work every day. We will get to the all the largely unnoticed tech, but her highlight was that the tailgate operates remotely via the push of a button. I think this had a lot to do with her being in and out the boot all the time, and while it might seem to be a trivial point, for her, it would have been near the top of her list of reasons to scratch a car off her shopping list if a car didn't offer this. For what it is worth, the Ford Territory Titanium offers a panoramic roof, LED ambient lighting, wireless smartphone charging, three USB ports up front and one in the rear and an eight-speaker Bluetooth audio system integrated into the centre touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, complemented by convenient steering wheel-mounted audio controls. The electric tailgate came in very handy. Picture: Ford Marital squabbles Right in front of you is a panoramic display that integrates a 12.3-inch high-definition digital instrument cluster, and a 12.3-inch landscape infotainment touchscreen which you can operate using your finger or a rotary controller on the centre console. This leads me into the final part of this review, and that is the drive. I am just going to say that my wife and I drive somewhat differently. Where she says everything is nice, I get on my high horse about technical things like throttle calibration. And I have to say, I do not like the throttle calibration on the Ford Territory. It's slow to react and when it does, it wants to take off like a race car, which is typical of almost all Chinese cars. But, and this is a big but, my wife did not see things this way and was quite happy to trundle around the suburbs without a care in the world. Obviously, once on the boil, the 138kW of power and 318Nm of torque was more than enough for her and me for everyday driving. ALSO READ: Intentions clear: All-new Ford Territory stakes its claim Ford Territory in tough segment The seven-speed dual clutch transmission was smooth enough too, with the only pain being the auto start/stop that was also slow to wake up when you wanted to pull away. But again, this was something that my wife was more than okay with. She also had no real interest in playing with the four selectable drive modes. There are Normal, Eco, Sport and Mountain. The latter was lost in translation I guess. The Ford Territory features two 12.3-inch screens. Picture: Ford She did think the fuel consumption figure we achieved of 9.1 litres per 100km was more than acceptable for medium-sized SUV and I agree with her. ALSO READ: Ford Territory takes the sting out of the daily traffic grind Despite some little niggles with the Ford Territory my wife was prepared to live with, the biggest hurdle this vehicle faces is the sales race. At a price point of R725 500 in the SUV segment, it's absolute war against the Chinese like Chery, Jaecoo, GWM, Haval, GAC and Jetour. All of them offer similar product at a similar, or better price.
