Van der Dussen loads Proteas' youngsters ahead of Zimbabwe showdown
Moreover, outside of the newbies in international cricket, Nandre Burger and Gerald Coetzee have returned from injury and immediately showed good signs, bowling fast, which is precisely what coach Shukri Conrad would want. At the top of the order, Lhuan-dre Pretorius looks as good as any of the top T20I opening batters in the world. Currently, in the ongoing Tri-Series in Zimbabwe, Rubin Hermann has taken up space in the number four position in the batting order, and so has Dewald Brevis in the middle-order. Yes, the country has been rocked with sudden retirements, including that of Heinrich Klaasen recently; however, there are players in the system who have shown good signs. DESPITE the loss to New Zealand earlier this week, South Africa, across all three formats, is in a really good position with regard to the quality of the talent pool. Your voice. Your choice. 🫵🗳️🇿🇦 Introducing the nominees for SA Fans' Player of the Year at the #CSAAwards2025 ! These are the fan favourites who've lit up the game with unforgettable moments and pure GREATNESS. Now it's your turn to decide the champion! 🏏 Vote now:… Considering the current state of affairs with regard to the widening and ever-improving talent pool, Captain Rassie van der Dussen believes no country in the world has the quality and quantity that South Africa has right now. "I look at some other countries with their guys coming through, and they don't have what we have. The young guys coming in now are guys who've knocked the door down, either in performance or how they've gone about it," Van der Dussen told the media on Saturday. "If I think like, okay, Luandre hasn't put in two years of domestic performance, but what he did for the Titans, what he did in SA20, you could just see, this guy needs to play at this level, for example. Brevis, through performance, yes, he played two T20s against Australia a while ago, but now, through performance over the last six months, he's really made that spot his own, and putting guys under pressure in the middle of it. "As a player in a team, that's that positive pressure you want, you want someone breathing down your neck, because that's fair, if you don't perform, there's a guy there that's going to take your place, and in a team environment, that's always a good place to be, so it's not like, you know, I can rest on my laurels, because there's no one really pushing me for my spot. "I think in every spot, every department, bowling, spin bowling, fielding, keeping, batting, middle order batting, there's guys putting their hands up and saying, listen, I want to be part of this team, I want to stake my claim in this team, and that, obviously, as the guy's in position, that keeps you on your toes, and there's that hunger from the guys behind saying, listen, I also want to be here." Though the youngsters are promising, Van der Dussen understands that there is a long way to go, and it showed during their first two matches of the ongoing Tri-Series. Going into tomorrow's match against hosts Zimbabwe and for the rest of the series, Van der Dussen wants the team to gel well together. "We're quite a young team and a dynamic mix. So, it was always going to be a challenge to try and get us to play together as a team that knows each other well. Yes, we know each other, we've played against each other, but guys like Lhuan-dre, they've been in the Test setup, yes, and Rubin coming in, even Gerald and Nandre coming back after what seems like forever, (we need to) get that jelling, to get the feeling of a jelling unit," said Van der Dussen. "As an environment goes, that's great, we come here, we don't feel like there's guys missing, and in our prep, and how we talk, and how we conduct ourselves, how we walk around, we don't feel, okay, our captain Aidan is not here, or Dave is not here, or KG is not here, it's not that. The guys that are here now, they're here in the team for a reason, they're now taking ownership of the series." The fixture between South Africa and Zimbabwe is set to get underway at 1 pm SAST at the Harare Sports Club.

Jets place DE Jermaine Johnson on active/PUP
The Jets placed edge rusher Jermaine Johnson on the active/physically unable to perform list Saturday, the team announced. Johnson tore his right Achilles in a Week 2 game against the Titans, but he is expected to be ready for the 2025 season opener. He gave an update after the Jets announced their pre-camp transactions. 'I will be on PUP because the team wants to move slow to be safe, which I agree with. Not because I'm not ready. All is well,' Johnson wrote on social media. Johnson, the 26th overall pick in 2022, earned Pro Bowl honors in 2023 when he totaled 7.5 sacks, 55 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 16 quarterback hits and an interception that he returned for a touchdown. The Jets also placed wide receiver Irvin Charles on the active/PUP list. Charles, a core special teams player, tore an ACL on a punt-coverage snap against the Dolphins last December. At that time, his five tackles on special teams tied for team lead. Rookie linebacker Aaron Smith received an active/non-football injury/illness designation. His injury or illness is undisclosed. The South Carolina State product signed with the Jets as an undrafted free agent in April after leading the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with 92 tackles in 2024.

Tennessee Titans' Roger McCreary says 2025 season is 'personal'
This season is personal… #Year4 In just a matter of days, the Tennessee Titans will report to training camp, and the grind of the 2025 NFL season will begin. For some players, the grind never stops, and they spend their offseasons getting into shape and honing their skills. Count Roger McCreary as one of those, and he is focused on making his fourth season in Nashville his best, declaring on social media that, 'this season is personal.' After posting his workout video with his declaration, he joined Mike Garafolo and Cameron Wolfe on The Insiders on the NFL Network to discuss his personal goals and outlook on the Titans heading into the 2025 season. To kick things off, Garafolo hit on the 'personal' comment. 'That's one thing I really want to do is talk more trash and get in people's heads.' #Titans CB Roger McCreary gave @CameronWolfe and me on The Insiders on @nflnetwork one of the more honest answers for a season goal — a season he says is 'personal.' 'It means a lot; this year is personal. Everybody knows me as a quiet guy, and I feel like going into my year four, I've got to show them all me,' he said. 'I just gotta express who I truly am on and off the field. And I feel this is the year.' After discussing his personal goals, which include being regarded as one of the top cornerbacks in the game, McCreary touched on the Titans and his outlook for the team heading into 2025. 'Going into the season with the Titans, I feel like we are going to show people who we're really made of and who we truly are.' He said, 'Because I feel like a lot of people don't respect us. They don't talk about the Titans.' McCreary is spot on with his take. Many outlets discount the Titans, and have them as almost an afterthought within the NFL landscape, and it is clear from the interview that he does take that personally. Tennessee has a tough decision ahead with McCreary, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract. If they don't extend him now, an outstanding season could price him out of Nashville, with the value of slot corner increasing with every contract. McCreary has been a productive player for the Titans and should be on their short list to retain.

Tennessee Titans' Jeffery Simmons on Cam Ward: 'He's legit'
Cam Ward was, by far, the best quarterback in the 2025 NFL draft class, and the Tennessee Titans had the number one overall pick. After the last few seasons of quarterback woes, it was no surprise that the Titans picked Ward with that selection. Since joining the team, Ward has impressed everyone within the organization, from custodians to bigwigs, Ward has made a point to get to know everyone. The way he carries himself on a daily basis showcases his character, and everyone is taking notice. Earlier this week, Titans' defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons appeared on Good Morning Football and was asked how he felt about his new quarterback. "First off, I think our team, the Tennessee Titans, never gets the respect and attention we need. I've never seen the number one pick overall never get the respect and, quite frankly, the attention he deserves," Simmons said. Then he dove into the first time he met Ward, which was at a private birthday party. They chatted quite a bit, and Simmons razzed Ward about smack-talking his guys. Specifically, Simmons recalled the time during minicamp where he and Ward were talking trash to each other while Brian Callahan was giving Ward the play. Simmons had just sacked Ward on the previous play, and Ward continued to talk to Simmons while he was receiving the play from Callahan, and continued while giving the play to his offense. He was unfazed, and the next play was an 80-yard bomb to Calvin Ridley. "That's just his swagger. That right there showed me that we got us one, he's legit. And I think, where we're at right now with him not getting enough praise, there's no number one pick overall who's not getting the attention and the praise he deserves, but I think that's a chip on his shoulder. You can tell by how he goes about his business, his swagger, and his demeanor that he's gonna be one of the ones, and I'm really excited to see it." Simmons is a seven-year veteran and one of the longest tenured players on the team. He's seen his fair share of quarterbacks on the other side of the field, as well as in his own locker room. His opinion matters, and it echoes everything we've heard about Cam Ward since he was drafted.
