Toby Carvery owner toasts higher sales as pubs lead the way

Hospitality giant Mitchells & Butlers has toasted higher sales in recent months amid stronger spending from pubgoers, while the firm braces for a swathe of increased costs including wages and meat prices. The company, which owns brands including Toby Carvery, Harvester, and All Bar One, said its total sales were £1.5 billion over the 28 weeks to April 12. This was 4.3% higher than the same period a year ago, compared like-for-like, with a larger lift coming from drink sales than food. Chief executive Phil Urban said the performance was 'broad based', adding: 'Whilst we'll always have brands that are doing better than others, all our brands are doing well. 'It's been the case for the last two or three years that Nicholson's has led the way, closely followed by Sizzling Pubs, Vintage Inns, and Castle Pubs,' he told the PA news agency. 'Miller & Carter has had a solid six months so it's good to see that doing well.' But he said its Irish pub and bar chain O'Neill's was 'probably having the toughest time' due to challenges facing the late-night market. Mitchells's pre-tax profits jumped to £134 million from £108 million last year, it revealed. But the company is bracing for its costs to rise by about 5%, or £100 million, across the year – although it warned this could rise to as much as £130 million over the next financial year. This is set to be driven by a surge in labour costs caused by a higher national living wage and an increase to the rate of employer national insurance from April. It is also seeing food costs rise, especially meat, which meant it was forecasting a higher rate of overall inflation next year. 'But we are hard at work to mitigate that,' Mr Urban told PA. 'Steak is a big driver of those costs – we've got a steak brand so we're not going to compromise on quality.' Cost-saving efforts include shaking up menus at other brands and more efficient staff scheduling. The chief executive added: 'We and the sector will raise prices every year, I don't think there's any shame in that. 'Our pricing in recent years has ranged between about 3% and 5%. 'We base our pricing decisions on the market, looking at what our competitors are doing… but I would imagine that every operator in the sector with employer national insurance, before you even think about food costs, are having to think about prices again. 'Living wage has moved way ahead of inflation in the past three to four years, therefore some of that will be coming back into the sector. 'Today, a lot of our consumers have got more money in the pocket than they had before.'

Toby Carvery owner Mitchells & Butlers posts soaring first-half profits

Pub company Mitchells & Butlers has seen a leap in profits as people continue to spend on going out. The Toby Carvery and All Bar One owner saw pre-tax profits jumped by nearly a quarter to £134million in the 28 weeks ending 12 April. In the same period, its operating profits rose by 10.4 per cent to £181million. Its like-for-like turnover grew by 4.3 per cent, supported by bumper demand over Christmas, good weather in late March, and healthy trade on Mother's Day. While food and drink volumes remained flat during the period, the company's overall revenue still increased by 4.5 per cent to £1.45billion. Following the strong first half performance, it is now forecasting annual earnings towards the top end of expectations. M&B said it continued to outperform the wider market by more than 3 per cent, primarily driven by higher restaurant sales. The Birmingham-based business also credited the first-half result to 'disciplined cost control' and efficiencies. M&B believes its full-year operating profit will be at the high end of current consensus forecasts even though it anticipates £100million of additional cost headwinds, mainly due to higher labour expenses. Phil Urban, chief executive of M&B, said: 'Notwithstanding a likely increase in cost headwinds next year, we have confidence that relentless focus on delivery of our strategic priorities will generate further value.' From early April, the National Living Wage rose 6.7 per cent to £12.21 per hour, while the minimum wage for 18-to-20-year-olds soared by 16.3 per cent to £10 per hour. And National Insurance contributions on staff earnings went up from 13.8 per cent on wages above £9,100 per year to 15 per cent on salaries exceeding £5,000. The hospitality sector has widely criticised the measures, warning they will lead to job losses, cancelled investment, and venue closures. Julie Palmer, partner at Begbies Traynor, said: 'Mitchells & Butlers' impressive performance highlights how the larger players are proving resilient, even against a backdrop of higher costs and low consumer confidence across the leisure sector.' 'M&B's healthy sales growth stands in contrast to these factors, and suggests there is an underlying current of consumer confidence that these industries can ride. 'It is encouraging for the sector as a whole that people are still finding room in their household budgets to go out and enjoy a drink or a meal.' Mitchells & Butlers shares were 2.9 per cent higher at 284p on Thursday morning, making them one of the FTSE 250's top risers.

American visits Toby Carvery for first time and gives surprising 3-word verdict

An American tourist visited Toby Carvery for the first time with his partner to enjoy a good Sunday Roast meal - but their overall verdict was quite surprising to Brits An American diner was taken to Toby Carvery by his British partner for the first time and his reaction was somewhat unexpected. In Britain, a roast dinner is a rite of passage, a meal staple - and it's usually a dish which evokes gleeful praise from anyone with a plate filled with golden roast potatoes, a meat of choice, greens and Yorkshire puddings dripping in gravy. ‌ But this one man from the US didn't hesitate to compare his Sunday Roast with something that's celebrated back home. Although he claimed to have had 'dreamt of this moment' and 'waited all his life' to try Toby Carvery, he compared his British experience with a huge American holiday. ‌ The couple, Matt and Omar from San Francisco, are known on TikTok for their food critique videos - which have earned them 1.4 million followers. They flew to the UK for Omar's sibling's nuptials, and spent their free time visiting Borough Market, Greggs, and of course, Toby Carvery. Matt and Omar also tried fish and chips and Cadbury Creme Eggs. A little bit of everything. They visited Toby Carvery in Bolton, Great Manchester, where Matt and Omar enjoyed a delicious Sunday Roast meal. Sharing their experience on their conjoint TikTok account @mattandomar, Omar said: 'I took my American husband to Toby Carvery for the first time.' Matt then expressed his enthusiasm, saying that he was 'so excited'. He chose turkey and pork as his meats, piling up his plate with stuffing, spuds, a Yorkshire pudding and vegetables. 'What is a Yorkshire pudding? I thought pudding was a dessert?," he asked. But once he tried his meal, he spilled the three controversial words, which were: 'That is Thanksgiving.' Matt explained: 'It tastes like Thanksgiving in a bite. You can have Thanksgiving all the time here. We only have it once a year and you can have it all the time. This is heaven.' Although he wasn't a fan of the cauliflower cheese, he was said to be 'happy' at the experience he had. ‌ Naturally, the video gathered a lot of attention from other follower. A fan wrote: 'As an American, I loved Toby Carvery.' A second one added: 'I love me a Toby Carvery. I live in Canada and crave a Toby whenever the weather is sad.' The restaurant itself also left a comment underneath their video, replying: 'We are obsessed.' On the other hand, not everyone seems to be a fan of Toby Carvery, as some users shared their bad experiences. One user recalled: 'My boyfriend is British and last year he took me to Toby Carvery because I always wanted to go and I literally cried because the food was disgusting.' Another commented: 'I'm British, love a roast, but Toby Carvery is awful.' Matt and Omar got told to add Wetherspoons to their list of British culinary spots to visit.
