Friday night double-headers, Dogs' prime-time reward in AFL fixture; De Koning out with larynx injury
In today's AFL Briefing, your wrap of footy news: The Bulldogs have been rewarded with prime-time fixtures as the AFL released the schedule for all but the final round of the season. Tom De Koning is sidelined for Friday night's clash at the SCG after suffering a knock to his larynx in Carlton's win over the Saints. AFL releases fixture for back end of season Brittany Busch The AFL has handed the Western Bulldogs a prime-time boost with a spate of Thursday and Friday night games in the second half of the season, in a fixture that also includes three Friday night double-headers. The schedule for rounds 16-23 dropped on Thursday, revealing big Friday night programs that the AFL said were aimed at 'maximising prime-time audience whilst also managing team travel and breaks between games'. In round 17, traditional rivals Carlton and Collingwood will play at the MCG before West Coast host GWS in the first of the double-headers. It will be the first time this year two matches will be held on a Friday night, although Good Friday featured a twilight match in Melbourne followed by a late game in Perth. The Western Bulldogs have been rewarded for their strong start to the season, scoring three Friday evening slots and two Thursdays. And the Dogs' round 18 clash with Adelaide has been moved to Marvel Stadium after originally being slated for Ballarat's Mars Stadium, which is under construction. A paltry crowd of less than 5000 watched the Bulldogs thrash Port Adelaide in Ballarat in round eight, drawing a pointed sledge from ex-Bulldog Bailey Smith. The AFL has also backed in finals hopefuls Essendon and Carlton with prominent night fixtures. The Blues, who are 10th on the ladder, have struggled to live up to pre-season expectations, while the Bombers are ninth and remain strong drawcards especially while they are in the finals hunt.

McKay's clutch goal seals gutsy AFL win over Saints
Harry McKay has capped his outstanding game with the match-sealing goal as Carlton beat St Kilda by 15 points in an AFL arm wrestle. McKay kicked his third goal from an acute angle late in the last quarter as the Blues bounced back from last week's bad loss to Adelaide, winning 11.11 (77) to 9.8 (62). The MCG clash featured a crowd of 65,680 - easily a St Kilda-Carlton home and away record - for the annual "Spud's Game" in honour of late Saints great Danny Frawley. Carlton were outstanding, rallying from a succession of injuries that left them with one fit player on the bench at half time. McKay had 19 disposals and 10 marks, while captain Patrick Cripps was also outstanding. Amid speculation about St Kilda trying to lure him after this season, Carlton ruck Tom De Koning engaged in an engrossing duel with Rowan Marshall and racked up seven clearances. Harry McKay seals it from the boundary 😤#AFLSaintsBlues — AFL (@AFL) May 9, 2025 Blues key forward Charlie Curnow injured his knee at training during the week, he kicked three goals - all in the first half. The injury woes came elsewhere for the Blues. First, Mitch McGovern came off second-best in a clash with Liam O'Connell, and was subbed out of the game before being taken to hospital with a chest injury. The Blues jumped out to a 24-point lead in the second term and were piling the pressure on St Kilda. But as St Kilda started drawing level in contested possessions and gaining more territory, the Blues' interchange bench started looking like a casualty ward. Blake Acres went off with a shoulder injury, then Lachie Cowan was forced out with hamstring tightness. Nick Haynes, close to best afield in the first half, was left with a sore head after an accidental knock and Carlton ended the second term with only one available player on the bench. Haynes and Acres were able to start the third term, while Saints young gun Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera was also struggling with leg problems. But Wanganeen-Milera stayed on the field and had a game-high 30 possessions. Cooper Sharman kicked his second goal and the Saints drew to within six points, but Carlton stood firm under the pressure. McKay kicked his second goal late in the quarter from a generous free kick and the Blues retained their halftime lead of 14 points at the last change. It was a dour arm wrestle in the third term. After 28 stoppages in the first half, there were a whopping 35 in the quarter. In a significant blow for St Kilda, small forward Jack Higgins was subbed out at three-quarter time, with club officials citing illness.

Michael Voss insists star forward Charlie Curnow will play St Kilda on Friday despite ‘nice little collision' with teammate
Carlton coach Michael Voss denied star forward Charlie Curnow was having injections in his knee just to get through training and insisted he was 'fine' to play St Kilda despite a 'nice little collision' with a teammate. Curnow collided with star ruckman Tom De Koning late in Wednesday's session but Voss said there was no issue with the 28-year-old's knee and he would train again on Thursday before Friday night's game. Voss said he tried to 'fob off' reports around Curnow but did want to clarify his fitness. 'He'll be fine,' Voss said on Thursday. 'The last 30 seconds of the drill, him and Tom had a nice little collision, so it's not exactly what you want to see. 'They're both fine. I tried to have a bit of a laugh to fob it off, but (an initial report he was) holding his knee is incorrect … he's fine.' Voss said it 'wasn't the case' that Curnow had been having pain injections before training. 'You don't need to know specifics – let's just say he's playing, he said. 'I think I've been pretty emphatic at this point that he's playing.' Jack Silvagni returns to the Blues line-up after breaking his hand in the first quarter of the round 7 win over Geelong to bolster the team after last week's road loss that Voss said was reviewed hard. 'The recent form says we have been going OK, but we let ourselves down last week,' he said. 'It's just taking the opportunity to reset and reinforce what works well for us.' That will include a renewed focus on effort, which was down against the Crows and left Voss 'disappointed the most'. 'We'd made a lot of ground in a lot of areas … we're looking for a response,' he said.

Michael Voss says Charlie Curnow will play this weekend despite injury at Blues training
A cagey Michael Voss has attempted to diffuse any concern over Charlie Curnow's fitness after the star Carlton forward was involved in a heavy training collision. The Blues coach declared the dual Coleman medallist was available for Friday night's clash with St Kilda at Docklands. Curnow will take part in Carlton's captain's run today in a bid to reassure medical staff he is fine to play. Voss confirmed Curnow had collided with star ruckman Tom De Koning at training, but disputed reports the 28-year-old had an issue with his knee. With Carlton coming off a thumping defeat to Adelaide, Voss was in no mood to discuss specifics around Curnow's health. "He'll be fine," Voss said on Thursday. "The last 30 seconds of the drill, him and Tom had a nice little collision, so it's not exactly what you want to see. "I tried to have a bit of a laugh to fob it off, but holding his knee is incorrect." Voss also rejected suggestions Curnow had been receiving pain-killing injections in his knee to train and play. "You don't need to know specifics, let's just say he's playing," he said. Voss also said key defender Jack Silvagni would return after missing the 60-point smashing by the Crows at Adelaide Oval. Silvagni, who has been one of the Blues' best players this season, broke his hand in the rousing win against Geelong a week earlier.
