Tom Lynch commits to Tigers with one-year contract extension
Richmond coach Adem Yze isn't ruling out a season beyond 2026 for recently re-signed spearhead Tom Lynch. Lynch returns to the Tigers from his five-week ban this Saturday and will return next season too after extending for another year on Friday. Yze has regularly spoken about Lynch's importance to Richmond through his performance and guidance to the young forwards at Punt Rd. On Friday, the coach said he wouldn't 'put a ceiling' on Lynch's career and referenced the repeat one-year deals given to ageing stars across the competition. 'When you look at Scott Pendlebury, I think he's signed five one-year deals in a row,' he said. Tom Lynch is staying at the Tigers. Picture: Mark Stewart 'We don't want to put a ceiling on how long that's going to last, right now he signs a one-year deal and Dion (Prestia) is looking at a one-year deal as well. 'It's not just the one-year process, it'll all be based around body and impact in games. When I say it could be two or three years, if all going well the same sort of discussion will happen next year. 'For a player, you don't want to look at the end, you don't want to see the finish line, you want to be able to perform and hopefully they can last as long as Pendles. 'We're obviously rapt he's playing this weekend, but we're rapt at the same time he's committed for at least another season. 'He's so important to our footy club but not only our footy club, our young forward line so stoked for that news to come out today.' While Richmond committed to a heavy rebuild last year, it isn't willing to push all of its premiership experience out the door. Yze said players like Lynch, Dion Prestia, Nathan Broad and Nick Vlastuin were 'critical' to fast-tracking the Tigers' youth. 'You can see other teams around the comp are searching for that and bringing in players from other teams, we've got that at our doorstep and within our four walls,' he said. 'Dion is in discussion right now, Lynchy committed, Broady … their ability to fast-track our players is going to be so important for us. 'It's awesome for our footy club and young forward line.' Richmond coach Adem Yze says Lynch's leadership is 'critical'. Picture: Mark Stewart Lynch plays his first game in five weeks since his rogue swing at Adelaide defender Jordon Butts. Yze said Lynch was remorseful and eager to make amends. 'We did and it's been five weeks since we did that … we love the fact he's got white-line fever and he plays on the edge,' he said. 'Our younger forwards need to know what it is to compete on an AFL field, but it spilled over and the action was wrong and our younger players needed to know that. 'The discussion on him going in had started mid-season, so he knew he was a required player. We understand how important he is to us, 'Having his magnet available today, for a coach you just feel safer knowing our younger boys have got a quality forward, leader of our footy club to stand aside.' Tigers' top draft pick hurts hamstring again on return
Richmond's No.1 draft pick Sam Lalor has hurt his left hamstring again, only a couple of minutes into his AFL return. In a disastrous start to the Tigers' imposing GMHBA Stadium assignment, Lalor limped off the field and was subbed out of the game. He had tackled Tom Atkins on the outer wing early in the first term, and when Lalor stood up he started limping immediately. This was his first game since hurting the same hamstring in the round-12 loss to Essendon. Lalor also injured his left hamstring before he was drafted. The Tigers could have recalled him last week, but deliberately held him back in a bid to make sure he was ready. Richmond have only won one of their past 15 games at GMHBA Stadium and are trying to pull off a massive upset without key forward Tom Lynch, who has started his five-game suspension. But the Cats also suffered a pre-game blow, when star on-baller Bailey Smith was a late withdrawal because of illness after he did not train on Friday.

AFL 2025: Richmond defender Josh Gibcus will return, while another Tiger will be unleashed on full minutes
Richmond defender Josh Gibcus will pull on the jumper for the first time in nearly 500 days when he returns to action through the VFL. Gibcus has had a difficult 18 months after sustaining an ACL rupture in the Tigers' second game of 2024. Prior to that injury, the promising key back had a series of hamstring troubles which he sought treatment for overseas. He will make his long-awaited return this weekend in Richmond's reserves against Geelong on Sunday. 'Yeah he's (Gibcus) playing some VFL footy which is awesome, he's been chomping at the bit for the last few weeks,' Richmond coach Adem Yze said. Richmond defender Josh Gibcus (R) will make his long awaited return through the VFL this Sunday. Picture: David Caird 'He's finally got that opportunity, a big smile comes on my face when you say his name and I can't wait. 'They obviously play the next day so there will be a heap of staff staying down to be there and support him through it. 'We can't wait to see him out there.' The Tigers will be without the experience of Tom Lynch in the senior side on Saturday but have some promising inclusions to the twos. Jayden Short will accompany Gibcus in returning from injury and, according to Yze, will play 70 to 80 per cent game time before being available next week. The Tigers will also look to 'unleash' untried draftee Taj Hotton, who has built steadily from ACL recovery in recent weeks. 'It's a bit about everything, really, we've got to make sure he's (Hotton) ready to play AFL footy and not just play, he's got to perform and be ready to perform,' Yze said. (Photo by Michael Willson/AFL Photos via Getty Images) 'Last week was his first full game, it was still managed minutes or managed rotations, so he's played 80 per cent game time at VFL. 'This week we'll let him go, we'll unleash him, he gets to play as much game time as he can. 'Then it's around recovery and how he pulls up, we've got eight games to go and we've got make sure when he comes in we want him to stay in. 'We've got to make sure he's pulling up OK, give him the best chance – he's obviously a highly talented guy but we've got to set him up the right way.'
