Aaron Rodgers keeps future with Steelers, football uncertain while focusing on personal priorities: report
Print Close By Ryan Canfield Published May 31, 2025 The Pittsburgh Steelers and Aaron Rodgers have been linked for months in free agency, but that doesn't mean a union is imminent. Rodgers, 41, reportedly has not given the Steelers any guarantee he'll sign with the team. Rodgers "has not affirmatively told the Steelers that he's coming," NFL Network's Tom Pelissero said during a recent appearance on "The Rich Eisen Show." CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON The four-time NFL MVP said he has not closed the door on retirement. "I'm open to anything and attached to nothing. Retirement could still be a possibility, but right now my focus is and has been and will continue to be on my personal life. … There's still conversations that are being had," Rodgers said on "The Pat McAfee Show" in April. "I'm in a different phase of my life. I'm 41 years old. I'm in a serious relationship. I have off-the-field stuff that requires my attention. I have personal commitments I've made not knowing what my future was going to look like after last year that are important to me. "And I have a couple of people in my inner, inner circle who are really battling some difficult stuff. So, I have a lot of things that are taking my attention — and have, beginning really in January — away from football." Aaron Rodgers 'has not affirmatively' told the Steelers he's signing
Aaron Rodgers is an expert in playing the waiting game. The headline-making quarterback possesses the remarkable talent of making news, whether he speaks or not. In fact, Rodgers is generating more interest this offseason because of his silence rather than anything else. Advertisement That remains a constant theme for the four-time NFL MVP, who hasn't been known for his play on the field in recent years, but rather everything that comes with the experience off it. It was believed Rodgers would sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers after the New York Jets released the future Hall of Fame signal caller. As the clock continues to tick, it's anyone's guess whether he plays for Pittsburgh or announces his retirement. During an appearance on "The Rich Eisen Show" on Friday, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero spoke about Rodgers' immediate NFL future and why there is still a good bit of uncertainty. "I have been told that he has not affirmatively told the Steelers that he's coming," Pelissero said. "There's all these signs that he's coming, but he's not affirmatively said, 'Hey, June 9, book me the ticket, I'm coming in and I'm gonna join this team.' That has not happened as of this point." Advertisement Pelissero added that the Steelers are operating under the assumption that Rodgers will eventually sign, but he pondered the idea that the quarterback could change his mind given his unique nature. Options have dried up on the open market for Pittsburgh, who put all their eggs in the Rodgers basket this offseason. Russell Wilson left to sign with the New York Giants and Justin Fields inked a deal with the Jets, essentially emptying their quarterback room from last season. Kirk Cousins figures to be the other potential option, but the insider pointed out that the price for the Atlanta Falcons' backup remains too high and that the Steelers are committed to the idea of Rodgers right now. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler said on Saturday that the Steelers are just hanging around right now. Advertisement "When I talk to people with the team they say the same thing, that they have had contact with Aaron Rodgers," Fowler said. "They've remained optimistic that he will be a Steeler, but there is just nothing fast and firm yet on him signing with the team. So they continue to develop Mason Rudolph and Will Howard in OTAs." Fowler noted that the situation has been unpredictable. Steelers' mandatory minicamp is slated for June 10-12, leaving little margin for any bumps in the road going forward. Rodgers previously visited the Steelers' facility, but has offered little certainty surrounding the situation in his few public appearances. Advertisement He said on "The Pat McAfee Show" in April that retirement was still a possibility and that he was dealing with some personal things behind the scenes. Rodgers also made an appearance on "The Joe Rogan Experience" but didn't discuss anything football related. More recently, he offered up some information on the 'You Know What I Mean' podcast, saying he wouldn't play for the Chicago Bears, but there is a team that makes a trip to the Windy City next season. As the season quickly approaches and the offseason begins to fade, the Steelers are stuck in a holding pattern. After all, only Rodgers knows what will happen and what his future holds. Insider: Aaron Rodgers ‘Has Not Affirmatively Told' Steelers He'll Sign Contract
New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers during a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Oct. 20, 2024. -- Ed Thompson / Steelers Now The Pittsburgh Steelers have been waiting on a decision from Aaron Rodgers for over two months, and according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the four-time league MVP quarterback hasn't made a verbal commitment to the organization. 'I have been told that he has not affirmatively told the Steelers that he's coming,' Pelissero said during an appearance on the Rich Eisen Show on Friday. '… There's all these signs that he's coming but he has not affirmatively said 'Hey, June 9 book me the ticket. I'm coming in and I'm going to join this team.' That has not happened as of this point.' Advertisement All signs point to Rodgers eventually signing with the Steelers, as the 41-year-old QB dropped a major hint earlier this month. During a concert on May 17 in Austin, Texas with his friend and artist, Mike Stud, Rodgers held a Q&A with the crowd. At one point during the session, a girl asked him if he would ever play for the Chicago Bears. Rodgers replied, 'No. But I believe there is a team that might play in Chicago this year, a road trip to Chicago. I love Chicago, though, way more than they love me. It's been a great relationship all one way.' The Steelers play the Bears in Week 12 at Soldier Field. The Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints also both play at Chicago this season, but they're not considered clear-cut favorites to land Rodgers like the Steelers. Rodgers even shut down the idea of playing for the Saints. Advertisement Rodgers was later asked if he would sign with the Steelers, and he gave a rather ambiguous answer. 'You never know,' Rodgers said. The two discussed a wide-range of topics, but nothing football-related. Rodgers revealed a possible reason for his delay. 'I've figured it out the last year when I've been in the weeds with these people who are close to me that have cancer,' Rodgers said on the Joe Rogan Experience Podcast. That lines up with what the 41-year-old said on the Pat McAfee Show in April. 'I have off-the-field stuff going on that requires my attention,' he said. 'I have personal commitments I have made. I have a couple of people in my inner, inner circle who are battling some difficult stuff. So, I have a lot of things that are taking my attention.' Advertisement Steelers president Art Rooney II said at the NFL owners meetings in March that the team will 'not wait forever' on Rodgers. Over two months have passed, and Rodgers has still not signed with the Steelers. Rooney's stance hasn't changed. He's wiling to wait things out. 'A little while longer. I'll say the same thing,' Rooney said on his way out of last week's owners meetings, via Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. Aaron Rodgers Update Adds More Uncertainty for Steelers
Aaron Rodgers Update Adds More Uncertainty for Steelers originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Aaron Rodgers has been coy about his future plans in the NFL -- and even the Pittsburgh Steelers may not know his next move. Advertisement Many NFL insiders have predicted that Rodgers will ultimately sign with the Steelers, who appear to be his last remaining option after other potential suitors line up quarterbacks for the coming season. But the former league MVP has not given any public indication on what he plans to do next. NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported that Rodgers has also avoided any private indication to the Steelers about his plans. In an appearance on the "Rich Eisen Show," Pelissero reported that the Steelers have not heard anything from Rodgers. Pelissero reported that Rodgers "has not affirmatively told the Steelers that he's coming," despite having a meeting with the team's brass earlier this offseason. Rodgers still has time to make a decision, though ESPN's Adam Schefter suggested there could be a looming deadline. Advertisement "I think the Steelers' mandatory minicamp is next month," Schefter said. "Forget the exact date, roughly June 10. I would think that we would get a decision from Aaron Rodgers shortly before then about whether or not he should play. To me, you can't miss that mandatory minicamp where you start gearing up. I guess you can, but that's not ideal." The Steelers may be left with little options if Rodgers does not decide to sign. The team brought back veteran Mason Rudolph, who is currently atop the depth chart. Rams players who should compete for the 2028 Olympic U.S. flag football team
The NFL will reportedly discuss a resolution this year that would allow no more than one player from each NFL team to participate in the 2028 Olympics, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. This is intriguing because the 2028 Olympics will be in Los Angeles and have flag football as one of the events. So, we decided to rank the top-10 current or former Rams players who would make great flag football players. The 2028 Olympics are far away, so these names may not be on the Rams or even in the NFL by then. But that doesn't make the exercise any less fun. Advertisement RB Kyren WIlliams: We already know how elusive Williams is, so it stands to reason he'd be equally as dominate as a flag football player. RB Jarquez Hunter: Hunter is an explosive player. He had the third-highest 18.9% explosive run rate in college at Auburn and was drafted in the fourth round to be a home-run hitter. He'll also only be 25 in 2028. WR Tutu Atwell: If speed is the name of the game in flag football, Atwell has it. He broke 21 mph twice during the 2022 season. If he gets the ball in space, Atwell would be an electric flag football ballcarrier. OLB Jared Verse: Defense is half the game, and Verse is a relentless tackler. He's fast enough to keep up with anyone and can swipe at the flag with ease. KR Britain Covey: He's a new Ram who led the NFL in punt return yards in 2023. That shiftiness would go along way in a flag football game. WR Puka Nacua: The Rams star has averaged 6.3 yards after the catch during his NFL career. So when he gets the ball in space, he makes the most of it. DT Aaron Donald: Throw out the age and position. Donald is one of the most dominant players in NFL history. He needs a shot at playing flag football. Although his tenacity might be more of a detriment than advantage. QB Matthew Stafford: Yes, Stafford will be 40 by the time the 2028 Olympics come around and could be retired by this point. But his arm strength is still there and he's still one of the most accurate passers in the world. TE Terrance Ferguson: He's young, fast and great after the catch. All great aspects of a flag football player. Ferguson's 4.63-second 40-yard dash was No. 1 among tight ends at the NFL combine and he tied for the fastest 10-yard split. OLB Josaiah Stewart: He was better than most of the 2025 edge rusher prospects at getting to the quarterback. Those are translatable skills on the flag football field.
