FSU's Tommy Castellanos should stand on business. That's the type of QB Mike Norvell wants

Florida State quarterback Tommy Castellanos is standing on business. As he should It was obvious that Castellanos would address his previous comment about Alabama sooner, before the opener, which is a 3:30 p.m. kickoff on Aug. 30 at Doak Campbell Stadium. A reminder of what he said about the Crimson Tide, in an interview with On3, Castellanos stated that without Nick Saban, Alabama's defense will struggle against him. In day two of the ACC Media Kickoff, Castellanos remained confident about dealing with Bama in FSU's season opener and seemed to have the support of teammates who feel the same way. "We stand on what I said," Castellanos said. "But there's no disrespect between that team or anything like that. It's just the confidence that I have in my teammates and the way we've been preparing and putting this preparation together this off-season, I just feel confident in the guys and the work that we've been putting in. Just feel confident in me and my teammates and Coach Norvell and how he's get." Whether the results will go against Castellanos' favor, and the internet world will react to it in the worst way possible, his point has been made. Why can't Castellanos feel that no defensive team can stop him? This is the same quarterback who produced 3,300 total yards and 28 total touchdowns on his own as a sophomore, including 1,113 yards on the ground. Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle. Tommy Castellanos' confidence is exactly what FSU football needs No football player, coach, or fan needs a choir boy behind center. Even for head coach Mike Norvell, when he fiercely stated that he is not looking for sidekicks. Castellanos seems like the no-sidekick kind of guy. The moment he enrolled at FSU, Castellanos was viewed as a leader. He does have an enriching personality, as he alluded to on different occasions. He is the complete opposite of DJ Uiagalelei last, who was quiet and as aggressive when commanding his teammates, at least from what we've seen from a distance. Castellanos has a combination of a Jameis Winston-type attitude, as he compares himself, but also a mixture of Jordan Travis when it comes to swag, and can back things up with his level of play. No, we didn't see it last in his final tenure at Boston College. Castellanos clearly didn't fit the pro-style offense created by Bill O'Brien, which led to a complete fall-off in his season and ultimately resulted in his departure from the program after being benched late in the year. "You know, I'm very thankful for Boston College and all the people there that supported mewhen I was there," Castellanos said. "I had a great time there. But we're past that. I'm focused on this season and focused on everything going forward with my new teammates and my new team." Castellanos has a clean slate with nothing to lose. He's off the radar of everyone as one of the top QBs in his own conference, let alone on a national scale. That means no one will see it coming, except Castellanos. Florida State football QB Tommy Castellanos: 2025 Maxwell Award Watch List candidate

Florida State football announced on Monday that quarterback Tommy Castellanos is a candidate for the Maxwell Award Watch List for most outstanding player. Castellanos will be making his FSU debut on Aug. 30 when the Seminoles host Alabama at 3:30 p.m. in Week 1 of the regular season at Doak Campbell Stadium. On the ground, he rushed for 1,427 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns. His career year was in 2023 when he produced 3,361 total yards of offense and 28 touchdowns, including 1,113 rushing yards and 13 rushing scores. He was the first Eagle in program history to throw for 2,000 yards and rush for over 1,000 yards. Florida State football practice notes: Energy high as Seminoles begin preseason camp

Football is back, officially. Florida State football held its first preseason practice of the season on Wednesday, July 30, as the Seminoles begin preparation for Alabama and the 2025 season. The Tallahassee Democrat took in about 15 minutes of practice and got a first look at Tommy Castellanos, the new-look offense and defense alongside the new coaching staff. While viewing was limited to a handful of drills, here is what we saw from day one of the Seminoles preseason camp. Quarterback notes: Tommy Castellanos begins his first season leading the FSU offense Castellanos led off every drill as QB1, as expected, and he linked up mostly with true freshman wide receiver Jayvan Boggs and returning redshirt-junior Jaylin Lucas in the drills during the viewing period. From what we saw, Castellanos was on time with most of his throws — he did have one or two misses with balls thrown at the knees of intended targets. He spent time coaching up true freshman Kevin Sperry between drills, and seemed to be vocal with his teammates. Given the limited viewing, there wasn't much to take away outside of the delivery of the football to the receivers running routes. Offensive notes Recievers and running backs only partook in a handful of individual drills during the open window, with a few names earning some praise from the coaching staff. Boggs popped up more than a handful of times in his drills, earning praise from both head coach Mike Norvell and offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn at times. He worked with both Castellanos and Brock Glenn during the viewing window, a notable observation given how the coaching staff and teammates have praised the true freshman. Micahi Danzy was made to re-run a drill after a mistimed route and attempting a one-handed catch, with Norvell heard in the background yelling "two-hands." Malzahn instructed him to run the route again and he made a nice grab, followed by another later in practice as he continues his transition to a new position. Lucas, who was used as a running back last season, lined up and worked with the wide receivers in practice. Duce Robinson, Elijah Moore and Lawayne McCoy all earned praise for their work in various drills. There wasn't much to note with the drills done by running backs and the offensive line. Defensive notes The biggest takeaway was the vocalness of Darrell Jackson and defensive line coach Terrance Knighton. Knighton was barking orders, at times profane, at players running through defensive line drills. Jackson led off every drill and, Knighton made everyone re-run drills from the top with even the slightest error. Once Jackson finished his work, he joined Knighton in coaching the line through their work. The linebackers were split into two groups, with everyone working on pass rushing and ball security drills. There wasn't much action, but Justin Cryer was very vocal within the group alongside both linebacker coach John Papauchis and assistant Ernie Sims. Defensive backs worked in coverage drills, and there wasn't much to note with what we saw. Several ACC teams have turned to the transfer portal for high-level QBs in 2025

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Carson Beck transferred from Georgia to Miami because he viewed himself as a great fit in the Hurricanes' explosive offensive scheme. Miller Moss left USC for Louisville after learning of coach Jeff Brohm's history of developing transfer quarterbacks. And Tommy Castellanos moved on from Boston College to Florida State for a crack at beating national power Alabama in the season opener. And then there's Gio Lopez, who wouldn't mind becoming Bill Belichick's next Tom Brady at North Carolina. In all, eight of the top 25 quarterbacks in 247Sports' transfer-portal rankings landed in the Atlantic Coast Conference. By comparison, the Southeastern Conference has six of those top-level transfer QBs, while the Big Ten has four and the Big 12 three. It's why the ACC has spent this week touting itself as the 'conference of quarterbacks' while pointing to being the only league with at least one QB drafted in the first round of six different drafts since 2018. Each QB has his own story and reasons for leaving for greener pastures — and no doubt about it, NIL money certainly played a huge factor — but each comes with aspirations of replicating what Miami transfer Cam Ward accomplished last season. Ward left Washington State for the Hurricanes and in one season developed into the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft, securing a fully guaranteed $48.7 million contract with the Tennessee Titans. Beck, who was the No. 2-ranked QB in the transfer portal behind only former Tennessee product Nico Iamaleava at UCLA, left Athens despite going 24-3 as a starter for the Bulldogs. He called it a 'very difficult decision,' but said it's one that has worked out well so far leaving him excited about the future. 'What Cam was able to do is undeniable,' said Beck, who added that he's fully recovered from an elbow injury he sustained in last year's SEC championship game. 'The last school I was at, I followed up the two-time national champion, so I didn't really feel any pressure there. It's a game; I've played football my whole life. I've played quarterback since I was 7 years old. I've got a lot of good talent around me and really good coaches in position to be really successful.' Miami coach Mario Cristobal couldn't resist the temptation of adding such a proven commodity, saying 'everything' drew him to recruiting Beck. 'He's played in monster games and he's played at a high level,' Cristobal said. 'He is ultra competitive, and his football IQ is off the charts. It didn't take long to realize that he's a team player, and that his work ethic is also through the roof.' Moss threw for 2,555 yards and 18 touchdowns last season for the Trojans, but needed a change of scenery and couldn't wait for the opportunity to work with Brohm, who's viewed by many as a quarterback whisperer for his efforts in developing the likes of Aidan O'Connell, Tyler Shough and Jack Plummer. 'Obviously different coaches try to sell you on different things, but when there's consistent proof of your ability to do something, that kind of transcends any words you hear in a meeting,' Moss said of Brohm's history. Castellanos hasn't played a snap at Florida State but has already created a stir nationally when he told On3 that he doesn't believe Alabama can stop him in the Aug. 30 season opener — in part because the Crimson Tide no longer have Nick Saban running the show. He didn't back down from those comments on Wednesday at the ACC media days. 'We stand on what I said,' said Castellanos, who'll look to lead the Seminoles back to national prominence following a miserable 2-10 season. 'But there's no disrespect between that team or anything like that. It's just the confidence that I have in my teammates and the way we've been preparing and putting this preparation together this offseason. I just feel confident in the guys and the work that we've been putting in.' Among the other QB newcomers in the ACC include Cal's Jaron Sagapolutele, who was ranked fifth in transfer portal after his decision to leave perennial West coast power Oregon. Duke landed a key transfer in Tulane's Darian Mensah and Syracuse coach Fran Brown signed a pair of big-school transfers in LSU's Rickie Collins and Notre Dame's Steve Angeli. Collins is projected to start and attended the league's preseason media days on Wednesday, and will look to build on Kyle McCord's success last season after McCord — himself a transfer from Ohio State — threw for a national-best 4,779 yards for the Orange. The ACC has some highly-touted returning quarterbacks as well, most notably 4,000-yard passer Cade Klubnik at Clemson and the versatile Kevin Jennings at SMU. Both led their teams to the ACC title game and College Football Playoff berths last season. Georgia Tech's Haynes King transferred from Texas A&M after the 2022 season, said he never entertained the idea of leaving despite two successful seasons with the Yellow Jackets in which he's thrown for nearly 5,000 yards and combined for 68 TDs. 'I feel like we have a great opportunity this year to win some championships,' King said. 'The people in the building, I trust them, they're all wired the same, and they want to do things the right way and I'm not one to jump ship like I've said before. 'I've helped build this and rebuild it, and I want to see it through. I want to be part of it,' King added. ___ AP college football: and

Florida State quarterback comments on Alabama once again at 2025 ACC media days

The offseason talk between the Alabama Crimson Tide and Florida State Seminoles continues ahead of their Week 1 showdown in Tallahassee. Yes, on Wednesday at 2025 ACC football media days in Charlotte, North Carolina, Florida State quarterback Tommy Castellanos was asked once again about his previous comments from earlier this offseason. "We stand on what I said," Castellanos said at ACC media days. "But there's no disrespect between that team or anything like that. It's just the confidence that I have in my teammates and the way we've been preparing and putting this preparation together this off-season, I just feel confident in the guys and the work that we've been putting in." Castellanos' original comment on the Alabama vs. Florida State matchup came back in June, with the Florida State quarterback's quotes such as "they don't have Nick Saban to save them" making headlines. Those statements caught the attention of many across college football, which included some Alabama players such as linebacker Deontae Lawson, who commented on the quote recently at SEC media days. Alabama and Florida State are set to kickoff the 2025 college football season Saturday, Aug. 30 at 3:30 p.m. ET. The game will be played in Tallahassee, Florida on ABC.
