Three sea lions dead after 'incredibly upsetting' shooting in Canterbury
Three sea lions have died following a "senseless" shooting in the Canterbury region yesterday. A police spokesperson said three endangered sea lions were shot near the Waitaki River mouth on Saturday. Two of the sea lions were killed, and a third sea lion was also injured. In an update shortly after 6.30pm, Waitaki Police Sergeant Tony Woodbridge said the third wounded sea lion "sadly had to be euthanised". He said Ōamaru police were eager to hear from the community to help identify those responsible for the "senseless acts of cruelty against wildlife". ADVERTISEMENT The Department of Conservation said they were also investigating evidence supplied to them, and urged anyone who may know anything about the attack to come forward. "Obviously, it's incredibly upsetting and concerning that people would attack an animal, and we are keen to hear from anyone who may have heard anything about this attack, or seen any suspicious activity in this area." Local iwi were notified of the situation. Under the Wildlife Act, it is illegal to injure or kill protected native wildlife like sea lions and anyone who does so can face punishments of up to two years imprisonment and/or a fine of up to $250,000. New Zealand sea lions are one of the rarest sea lion species in the world, and are only found in Aotearoa.

Man arrested over three alleged assaults in 24 hours in Oamaru
Police are still seeking witnesses to an alleged series of assaults in Oamaru. Photo: RNZ / Patrice Allen Oamaru Police claim three violent incidents are isolated to one community within the town and those involved are known to each other. Three people were injured in Oamaru in separate incidents over 24 hours between Tuesday and Wednesday. Police arrested a 27-year-old man on Wednesday in relation to the assaults. He was charged with breaching release conditions, four counts of assault with intent to injure, wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm and two counts of burglary. Sergeant Tony Woodbridge said two of the alleged assaults happened at residential addresses while the third happened in a busy area where hockey games were being played nearby. One of the incidents was at a residential address where school-aged children were inside during the attack, Woodbridge said. A man was arrested but police were still investigating, he said. Woodbridge said after one alleged assault of a woman by a man at Centennial Park, police received numerous calls reporting it. He said the alleged incident would have been unsettling for those who witnessed it. "It is rare and to see it happen in the public, around a lot of children, a lot of families who are out there enjoying sport and these cars both speed away quickly, that was dangerous and horrific for the people to see," Woodbridge said. He said parents watching the hockey game filmed the incident. While the male walked back to his car, a white station wagon allegedly drove at him. Woodbridge said those involved in the alleged violence were known to each other and he wanted to reassure the public there was no danger to the wider community. Police also wanted information from the public such as anything they may have witnessed or if they knew anyone involved. He said no one else was seriously injured. The 27-year-old appeared in the Oamaru District Court on Thursday and was remanded in custody. His next court appearance is on 4 June. Oamaru man charged with four counts of assault
Photo: 123RF A man has been arrested following three violent attacks over a 24-hour-period in the north Otago town of Oamaru. A 27-year-old Oamaru man is facing several charges including four counts of assault, wounding with intent, burglary and breaching release conditions. Two people were taken to hospital with moderate injuries following separate assaults at residential properties on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Police were called to a third attack at Centennial Park on Wednesday afternoon after a woman was knocked unconscious. A white station wagon then drove at the offender, before ramming a black Subaru Legacy, police say. After the offender left in the Subaru, the victim got into the station wagon and the vehicle left the scene. "The third incident occurred in a busy area, in the vicinity of a number of people, and with hockey games being played nearby," Sergeant Tony Woodbridge said. "We would like to hear from anyone who was near the Centennial Park carpark, who saw or filmed the assault, or the vehicles leaving." Sergeant Woodbridge said members of the public had played a key role in the arrest, and while enquiries were continuing, those involved were believed to be known to each other. Police want to speak to anyone who witnessed the incidents or has other information that could assist. They can be contacted on 105, using the reference number 250507/6833. Information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
