Topshop boss confirms standalone shops are coming back
Topshop has confirmed it plans to open bricks and mortar shops across Britain as its revival gathers pace. Michelle Wilson, managing director at Topshop and Topman, told Drapers that the brand has 'something planned' for August and beyond. Topshop hosted a one-day pop-up event in Shoreditch, London earlier this year, called 'Topshop In The House'. The one-day pop up was a collaboration with Defected Records and marked Topshop's first physical event in four years. Wilson said this week: 'We have something planned in August to bring Topshop back into real life again, with a more semi-permanent presence than the one-day pop-up. 'In the shorter term that will be something with partner support and in the longer term we will do something standalone.' She said that Topshop and Topman would return to the high street in autumn via one wholesale partner. Wilson told Drapers: 'I'm excited to see Topshop back in person. I think the partner that we are collaborating with is an incredible partner. 'I think it will surprise a few people. I'm looking forward to the day that we launch that and seeing people's reaction and excitement.' However, Wilson stressed that the brand was not seeking to recreate what it had in its heyday, but was looking to build a presence, both in bricks and mortar and online, fit for the current market. The retailer is gearing up for the relaunch of standalone and websites, which are both currently understood to be going live in August. Asos boss José Antonio Ramos Calamonte said in April that the chain had spent 'two years rebuilding the product assortment of Topshop' ahead of the relaunch. ''The time has come to come back, to be much more present with consumers in the UK, but also globally,' he said. Topshop will not be returning to its former flagship store at 214 Oxford Street in London, which is now occupied by the new Ikea which opened last month. Earlier this year, London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan was among those calling for the return of Topshop, stating at the time: 'I'd meet my mates outside Topshop, my daughters took me shopping at Topshop and I know every type of Topshop jean. 'Wouldn't it be great to get Topshop back on Oxford Street?' Topshop was founded in 1964 youth-focused offshoot of the department store Peter Robinson. At its peak, Topshop was a titan of the British high street, raking in about £100million in profit, with hundreds of stores spread across almost every large town and city in the UK. But the store's popularity waned as it struggled to compete with fast fashion online, losing its younger shoppers to aggressive digital e-tailers like Boohoo and PrettyLittleThing. In 2018, former owners Arcadia revealed it was haemorrhaging cash, reporting a £93.4million pre-tax loss compared with £164.6million profit in the year before. And sales slumped 4.5 per cent from £1.8billion. Amid the demise of Arcadia, owned by Philip Green, in 2021, Asos acquired Topshop, Topman and Miss Selfridge for £330million. At the time of its collapse, there were 70 Topshop stores across Britain. In September last year, Asos sold a 75 per cent stake in Topshop and Topman for approximately £135million to form a joint venture with Danish holding company Heartland, controlled by the Holch Polvsen family. It was at this point last year that Asos said it planned to relaunch the and websites by the summer of 2025.

At the time of the deal, Asos planned on relaunching and by August this year. Michelle Wilson, MD at Topshop and Topman, told Drapers that the brand has something up its sleeve for August. But that's just the beginning - Topshop and Topman will return to the high street for autumn via a wholesale partner. 'We have something planned in August to bring Topshop back into real life again, with a more semi-permanent presence than the one-day pop-up,' she said. 'In the shorter term that will be something with partner support and in the longer term we will do something standalone." Wilson said she was "excited to see Topshop back in person" and said their collaboration "will surprise people". In April this year, Topshop launched a pop-up at Defected Records and shoppers went wild for it. Pull&Bear Opens New Flagship Store at Silverburn: Fashion Fans Celebrate in Glasgow! They recorded a sale every three minutes, which Topshop bosses have said is proof that there is demand for the adored store. Wilson added that they aren't trying to "recreate" the Topshop that millions knew and loved. She explained that the clothing store will be given a 2025 makeover to allow it to compete with the current climate. Wilson hinted that the shop will offer experiences, much like its industry-leading Oxford Street flagship store. The once-thriving London branch offered nail bars and piercing parlours. Topshop and Topman bosses also revealed that it is "not going after a specific age demographic." However, for the now thirty-somethings whose wardrobes were packed full of Topshop garms in the early 2000s, there's more good news. Traditional favourites like the Jamie and Joni jeans will be here to stay, as well as the new Asos-era bestsellers like the wide-leg Cinch jean. Wilson teased shoppers and said that they should expect Topshop's more casual side, as well as the formal "going out" pieces. In April, Asos CEO José Antonio Ramos Calamonte, announced the return of He said: "The first step of this comeback is This will be a standalone website, which will exclusively sell the legendary brand's clothing and is expected to launch in the second half of the year. Topshop's return to UK high street set to boost Asos' performance
Asos has announced as part of its H1 2025 financial results that it has spent the period rebuilding its engagement with Topshop and Topman customers and ramping up its brand activity with events and experiences. It published an Instagram social post last month (March) that read 'we missed you too,' which created a buzz about the prospect of the brand's return to the UK high street. Asos has now confirmed that "through a select range of wholesale partners" it will be bringing "the best" of Topshop and Topman to customers by the end of FY25. It added that it also plans to launch a dedicated website for the brand — It is five years since Topshop and Topman's parent company Arcadia went into administration and four years since online fashion retailer Asos took it out of administration, but made it online-only. GlobalData's senior apparel analyst Pippa Stephens sees Topshop as one of the key initiatives that could improve Asos' future performance. She tells Just Style: 'The most notable is the relaunch of Topshop and Topman, which Asos still has a 25% stake in, with standalone websites launching in H2, and the brands' social media pages hinting at a possible return of physical stores." She adds: "These brands currently get lost among Asos' wide product range, so this should help to bolster their visibilities and appeal once again." Asos continued to struggle in the first half of fiscal year 2025 (H1 2025) with revenue down 13%, however its turnaround plan was starting to show some green shoots in terms of its profitability. Asos CEO José Antonio Ramos Calamonte said: 'H1 FY25 is the strongest sign yet that our new commercial model is working. We are driving a significant transformation in profitability, with positive adjusted EBITDA up by c.£60m YoY.' However, the fashion retailer also disclosed total group revenue of £1.30bn for H1 FY25, which was a 13% decrease from its £1.51bn in the prior year. Total like-for-like (LFL) sales also dropped by 13%. "Topshop's return to UK high street set to boost Asos' performance" was originally created and published by Just Style, a GlobalData owned brand. In March, Topshop shared three images across its social channels that showed a couple standing on an industrial rooftop below a huge Topshop sign. The post then cut to black and displayed the message: "We missed you too." Two of the posts displayed the words "Topshop" and "Topman," and each had the caption: "We've been listening." This is actually going to make my year.' Another added: 'This has to happen,' while a third added: 'Absolutely buzzing.' While Topshop's return to the high street has yet to be officially confirmed, ASOS chief executive José Antonio Ramos Calamonte has previously stated that he would "not rule out any option to grow Topshop, and if that includes a physical presence, then we will not ignore it." Topshop, which had 70 stores, fell into administration in 2020 as part of the collapse of Sir Philip Green's Arcadia empire. It was then relaunched selling online only the following year when it was bought by Asos for £265million.
