LIV Golf stars give their true thoughts about Phil Mickelson's behaviour
Phil Mickelson's HyFlyers GC team, consisting of Cameron Tringale, Brendan Steele and Andy Ogletree, all spoke to the media ahead of LIV Golf's return in Virginia When it comes to Phil Mickelson, you would be hard pressed to find anybody who has a negative opinion of him. The 54-year-old was at the centre of admiration as his LIV Golf team-mates heaped praise on his incredible career and enduring thirst for knowledge. During a press event for the upcoming Saudi-backed series in Virginia, Mickelson's HyFlyers GC squad waxed lyrical about him. His team members, including Cameron Tringale, Brendan Steele and Andy Ogletree, all stepped up to the mic to speak with media representatives. Questions naturally gravitated towards six-time major winner Mickelson, particularly after he hinted that the upcoming US Open could be his last at Oakmont Country Club, a venue where he's notoriously finished as a runner-up six times. Joaquin Neimann, who captains Torque GC, didn't hold back in lauding Mickelson's relentless drive for self-improvement despite an already monumental career. "He wants to learn," the Chilean golf star said. "He has a lot of information between his church book at the Masters. He was making me hit putts from all over the place, 'know this, remember this'. I know he's that way and he works that way, and he thinks that he will get better that way." When asked to evaluate the legacy of 'Lefty', Mickelson's team-mates Steele, Tringale and Ogletree paid a heartfelt tribute to their captain, unanimously praising his work ethic, selflessness and generosity. Steele, 42, sang Mickelson's praises, saying: "From the first time that I met him through to this very day, it's really incredible. It's infectious. He's always helped me a ton on and off the golf course. "I just never see the guy slow down. He is just an incredible player. The longevity that he's had, how strong he is still, how far he hits it, how hard he works. Everything that he does still is really incredible. Just a model for me to follow after." Tringale, 37, echoed Steele's sentiments, saying: "I think we all have tremendous respect for Phil. With what he's done in the game, and I can say personally just from the last couple years, off the golf course. "Phil is one of the best people I know. He's selfless. When you interact with him, it's meaningful. I think it's authentic. "I think the way people feel, the way I feel when I leave an engagement with Phil is always better. I think that's something a lot of people don't know unless they've been lucky enough to have an encounter with Phil." At the age of 27, Ogletree couldn't be more elated about having the chance to tap into Mickelson's wisdom. The young American golfer expressed his immense appreciation for Mickelson's mentorship, saying: "Getting to know Phil personally has been an amazing experience. "There's not a time that goes by where he's not reaching out and asking how everything is going. He's very involved, as involved as we want him to be with any question that we might ask. "I feel very comfortable asking Phil anything from golf to life to anything, and he's been very generous with his time and helping me with my swing and with my short game and with anything that I might want to ask him. "For that, I'm just truly grateful. To be able to pick the brain of one of the greatest of all time is a really cool thing to be able to do."

Phil Mickelson shows true colours with Scottie Scheffler words after PGA Champs
Scottie Scheffler won the 2025 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow by five shots to secure his third major title, and Phil Mickelson was quick to acknowledge the achievement Phil Mickelson was forced to retract his bold prediction following Scottie Scheffler's dominant win at the 2025 PGA Championship. Scheffler claimed the third major win of his career on Sunday, finishing with a five-stroke lead at Quail Hollow. Mickelson, who has won six major titles, had time to watch the action unfold in Charlotte, North Carolina after missing the cut at the end of day 2. Scheffler saw off challenges from the likes of Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau with ease, despite being forced to change his driver before the PGA Championship. Previously, Mickelson had confidently ranked LIV Golf sensation Joaquin Niemann as the world's finest golfer following his win at LIV Singapore, boldly doubting Scheffler's ability to grab any wins before the Ryder Cup in September. On X, Mickelson had proclaimed: "Here's a hot take: Does Scottie win in 2025 before the Ryder Cup? I don't think so." This bold claim came on the heels of Niemann's sixth win in 16 months. Mickelson even responded to a post from Niemann's Torque GC squad, which placed him in the top five, by asserting: "Top 5? Try #1." Yet Scheffler's performance at Quail Hollow told another story, securing his third major with a convincing five-stroke lead and closing at 11-under-par, and Mickelson showed his true colours by admitting he had overlooked Scheffler. Mickelson took to social media to tip his cap to Scheffler 's extraordinary run of form: "Congrats to Scottie Scheffler on an incredible performance. Clearly #1 in the world." A clear U-turn from his previous stance, Mickelson's praise underscores Scheffler's claim to be the best golfer in the world. The official rankings certainly agree, with the 28-year-old having held top spot since March 2022. On day 4, despite facing hurdles in the opening nine, Scheffler eventually found his stride, distancing himself from his rivals on the leaderboard. DeChambeau, alongside Harris English and Davis Riley, were left in his wake, all T2 at six-under-par. Scheffler didn't just lift the esteemed Wanamaker Trophy with his latest display, he also earned a jaw-dropping £2.6million in winnings. Compiling an enviable record this season, Scheffler clinched the CJ Cup Byron Nelson with a staggering 31-under-par 253, tying the PGA Tour 72-hole record. At 28, Scheffler now lays claim to a trio of major championships - including two green jackets from Augusta National in 2022 and 2024, and his latest conquest at the PGA Championship. With his storied PGA Tour tally now at 15 wins out of his past 70 appearances, Scheffler joins the hallowed ranks of Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. Alongside these icons, he's the only player since WWII to chalk up 15 victories and win three majors before hitting 29.

Joaquin Niemann was virtually flawless Sunday, firing a 6-under-par 65 at Club de Golf Chapultepec to earn his third championship of the season at LIV Golf Mexico City. Niemann began his day two shots off the lead, but three birdies on his first seven holes put him in an enviable position. He added birdies on Nos. 10, 12, 16 and 18 to finish three strokes in front of the field at 16 under for the tourney. The win came in front of family and friends. 'Yeah, it's special,' Niemann said. 'My mom came all the way. I think the first time my mom has seen me win, so that's pretty cool. So yeah, I had my mom here, Didi, my wife, my friends, my team. It's been a really good couple months, so yeah, happy.' The Torque GC captain from Chile had one bogey, on the 14th. Following his third tournament win, Niemann remains in the lead for the individual season-long championship, a title that narrowly evaded him in 2024 as he finished second to Jon Rahm. He also locked in a spot at the US Open in June. 'Yeah, it's nice,' Niemann said. 'I feel like I wanted to be there (at the US Open), so yeah, it's great to keep doing what I'm doing, hitting the ball great, making putts, and yeah, hopefully keep it rolling.' The 26-year-old was barely pressed late, with the best charge coming from the incredible round turned in by Ripper GC's Lucas Herbert, a 10-under 61 beauty that featured an eagle and eight birdies. Herbert essentially ran out of runway to complete the comeback, coming into the day too far behind the leaders to catch up. However, he did help Cameron Smith's (72) Ripper squad finish in second in the team standings, behind Jon Rahm's (68) Legion XIII. 'Just one of those rounds where everything comes together,' Herbert said. 'I thought I played pretty decent the last two days, I just didn't get many breaks, and I just felt like today every time there was a line ball sort of thing I got the right kick and I'd make a putt where I needed to or just anything — just that sort of stuff. It just kept the momentum going through the round. 'Look, I played great, really enjoyed feeling everything I felt the last few holes, but it's just one of those rounds where it all just clicks for you, and it was a pretty cool feeling to do it at an event like this.' Bryson DeChambeau, leading the pack coming into the day, was attempting to go wire-to-wire but came up well short with a final-round 71 and had to settle for a tie for second with Herbert at 13 under. Rahm was fourth among individuals at 12 under, while Smith and Legion's Tyrrell Hatton (68) finished in a tie for fifth (11 under). 'It's pretty hard to make it more special than this moment right now,' Niemann said. 'I mean, this place is amazing. It was a good battle with Bryson, with Cam, so I'm happy to be in this position right now.' Torque finished the tournament in third place, while 4Aces was fourth.

Joaquin Niemann clinches LIV Golf's U.S. Open exemption
MEXICO CITY — It's known as "Golf's Longest Day," the 36-hole final qualifying for players aspiring to earn a spot in the U.S. Open. Joaquin Niemann was not looking forward to it. Now he doesn't have to. The Torque GC captain clinched the LIV Golf exemption by virtue of his third victory of the 2025 season on Sunday at LIV Golf Mexico City and will be in the field in mid-June at Oakmont. It will be the sixth U.S. Open start for the 26-year-old Chilean, who is now scheduled to compete in the rest of this year's majors after already playing the Masters earlier this month. "My team was asking me to sign up for the qualifier and the sectional, and I wasn't really into that," Niemann said after his three-shot victory at Club de Golf Chapultepec. "So more than anything I'm grateful that I'm not playing 36 holes on a Monday after a tournament. Yeah, I'm pretty happy." Awarded by the U.S. Open for the first time this year, the LIV Golf exemption goes to the player among the top three in the season-long individual standings as of May 19. In claiming the 40 points that goes to each LIV Golf individual tournament winner, Niemann extended his season-long points lead with his victory in Mexico City. Of his 124.66 points this season, 120 have come in his three tournament wins – Adelaide, Singapore and Mexico City. He now leads Jon Rahm by 30.3 points and Sergio Garcia by 46.66 points. With one final tournament – this week's LIV Golf Korea presented by Coupang Play – left before the U.S. Open's LIV Golf exemption is awarded next month, Niemann has guaranteed himself a spot for Oakmont. Rahm is the only player who can mathematically overtake Niemann with a win in Korea, and he already has a spot in the U.S. Open. Garcia doesn't have a spot in the U.S. Open but is too far behind to catch Niemann, even with a win in Korea and Niemann finishing outside the top 24 in points. Niemann now becomes the 10th LIV Golf player expected to be in the U.S. Open field, and he'll play in all four majors for the first time since 2023. He received special invites to play in the Masters and PGA Championship this year, and earned an exemption into the Open Championship by finishing in the top 25 in last year's Race to Dubai on the DP World Tour. One of golf's top players without a major, Niemann looks forward to making some noise in the upcoming majors, especially with his current winning form. "It's great to keep doing what I'm doing, hitting the ball great, making putts," Niemann said. "Hopefully keep it rolling." This piece is courtesy of Mike McAllister in partnership with LIV Golf.
