'Apparently I'm still a toddler': Xander Schauffele opens up on injury
March 6 - Xander Schauffele is one of the rare players who truly looks forward to the cold breezes and long rough of the PGA Tour's early West Coast swing. So, when the San Diego native started feeling an issue with his side a few days before Christmas, he decided to continue working out even though his trainer was out of town renewing his visa. Schauffele was determined to get himself prepared for the start of the 2025 season. "It was a kind of perfect storm," he said Wednesday. "I was left on my own and apparently I'm still a toddler. "I kept training and golfing and training and golfing, and I'm used to having someone either hold my hand or do something as simple as soft tissue. I didn't get any help and I think that is sort of what put my back against the wall." That included flying to Maui for the season-opening The Sentry, convinced he could work through the discomfort even without his team around. Schauffele tied for 30th, then flew to Florida to play in the inaugural TGL match. That would prove to be the last time we've seen Schauffele compete until this week's Arnold Palmer Invitational. He missed the entire West Coast swing, including two events at his favored Torrey Pines in San Diego, after being diagnosed with an intercostal strain -- a small tear in the rib cartilage on his right side. The downtime was especially difficult when the PGA Tour relocated the Genesis Invitational from Riviera Country Club to Torrey Pines out of respect for those impacted by the wildfires in Los Angeles. "I was sitting at home on the West Coast, that sucked for me," he said. "One of my dreams is to play Torrey South earlier in the year with long rough, cold, South only. And so to miss Torrey twice really, really sucked. I tried. I tried. "Nothing's worse than hitting a wedge out of thick rough and having everything come to a complete stop, you could make it worse. So that was an easy decision for me to make, thinking of long-term goals." The long-term goals begin to take shape with Schauffele's return at this week's Arnold Palmer Invitational. Then comes The Players, followed by next month's Masters -- one of the two majors he didn't win in 2024. Schauffele said he arrived at Bay Hill competition rusty, but with a clean bill of health after a battery of CT scans, ultrasounds and MRIs. He wanted to have a full clean bill of health after watching fellow stars Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth returns from their own recent injuries that involved surgery. "I feel like I've been pretty conservative with everything. Hopefully that pays off," Schauffele said. "If things go south, I won't be scared to back off, just because it's, you know, what's down the road is more important."

Genesis Invitational odds: Sleepers, predictions, how to watch Tiger Woods PGA Tour event
Genesis Invitational odds: Sleepers, predictions, how to watch Tiger Woods PGA Tour event Show Caption Hide Caption Justin Thomas & 'Shooter McGavin' discuss Happy Gilmore 2 Justin Thomas and actor Christopher McDonald discuss the upcoming film, Happy Gilmore 2 PGA Tour The PGA Tour signature event Tiger Woods hosts was also supposed to be the site of his long-awaited return to competitive golf this week. Those plans were officially scuttled Monday when Woods withdrew from the 2025 Genesis Invitational, citing the recent death of his mother. His absence will likely be felt in terms of viewership and interest for the tournament, but it had little effect on the BetMGM odds heading into first-round action beginning Thursday. Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy enter as tournament favorites in a loaded 72-player field for this year's relocated event, which was moved to Torrey Pines South Course in San Diego from its usual home at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles due to damages caused by recent wildfires in the Pacific Palisades area. Hideki Matsuyama is the defending champion at a different course, Harris English won the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines less than a month ago and they're both among 46 of the world's top 50 in the world golf rankings expected to tee off. Here are the latest odds for the 2025 Genesis Invitational, as well as how to watch this week's PGA Tour stop hosted by Tiger Woods at Torrey Pines South Course in San Diego: JORDAN SPIETH: Got the 'monkey off the back' at the WM Phoenix Open. Is he close to winning again? Genesis Invitational 2025 odds Scottie Scheffler is the favorite to win the Genesis Invitational in 2025, according to BetMGM, with Rory McIlroy a close second at this PGA Tour signature event. Odds as of Monday, Feb. 10 Favorites Sleepers Picks by USA Today Sportsbook Wire Tony Finau (+4500) : "He fired three sub-70 rounds at Pebble Beach to finish T-13 and now heads to Torrey Pines where he's had a strong track record. Since 2016 (including the 2021 U.S. Open), Finau has six top-10 finishes at Torrey Pines with two other top-20 finishes, missing the cut three times in that span." : "He fired three sub-70 rounds at Pebble Beach to finish T-13 and now heads to Torrey Pines where he's had a strong track record. Justin Rose (+12,500): "Rose missed the cut here last month but he's coming off a T-3 finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am where he played really well. He's a past champion at Torrey Pines, winning in 2019." 2025 Genesis Invitational predictions Sportsbook Wire: Hideki Matsuyama and Ludwig Aberg are top picks Cameron DaSilva writes, "Matsuyama is the defending champion at this event, but that was at Riviera. He'll be playing Torrey Pines this week where his course history is also great. … It's easy to forget how good Aberg looked at Torrey Pines in Round 1 less than a month ago when he shot 63. He then dealt with an illness and faded on the weekend with rounds of 74 and 79, sending him tumbling down the leaderboard. However, he was in complete control in Round 1 and should be healthy again now." CBS Sports: Tony Finau is good value pick Golf insider Patrick McDonald: "The six-time PGA Tour winner has a couple of top-10 finishes across the last three seasons and rattled off seven straight top 25s from 2015-21. His approach play tends to thrive on longer golf courses, and although the putter has been poor in recent years, he found some form at Pebble Beach where he finished T-13 in his last start." Today's Golfer: Rory McIlroy 'in the driver's seat' Tom Jacobs writes, "Since he's returned from the offseason and shown off his new swing changes and a new ball, McIlroy has been imperious. … He will inevitably have Scottie Scheffler to contend with everywhere he goes, but for now, Rory looks in the drivers' seat in 2025. … This looks like the perfect course for his skill set, where long, straight driving is the order of the day." Sports Betting Dime: Min Woo Lee, Daniel Berger and Cam Davis are best bets Michael Harrison writes, "It's only a matter of time before Min Woo Lee breaks through on the biggest stage, much like Thomas Detry did at the WM Phoenix Open. … Daniel Berger has regained the form that saw him win four PGA Tour events following a lengthy injury stint. … (Davis) is coming off a tie for fifth the last time teeing it up at Pebble Beach, where he gained over 10 strokes tee-to-green for the week. That result was his fourth top-20 in his last six PGA Tour events, which includes a pair of top-5s." Motivated by Pebble invite snub, Daniel Berger earns Genesis spot via Aon Swing 5
Daniel Berger and Michael Kim may have finished as distant runners-up to Thomas Detry on Sunday at the WM Phoenix Open, but they did earn the right to tee it up next week. Berger and Kim jumped inside the final Aon Swing 5 for the Genesis Invitational, the $20 million signature event that will be held at Torrey Pines' South Course in La Jolla, California. For Berger, one of his four career major top-20s came at Torrey Pines, where he was T-7 at the 2021 U.S. Open. 'It was really tough,' Berger said, 'so hopefully it's tough again. I saw a couple weeks ago when we played it, it was very difficult, so excited to go back.' It will also mark Berger's first signature event after he missed significant time in recent years with a back injury. 'I asked for a sponsor exemption into Pebble Beach, where the last time I played it I won, and two years in a row I didn't get that exemption,' Berger said, 'so it kind of was a little chip on my shoulder to get it done without needing anyone's help.' Kim, who will make his signature debut as well, attended Torrey Pines High School, though his best finish at Torrey is a T-23 at the 2018 Farmers. Here are the five players who punched their Genesis tickets via the Swing 5: Sam Stevens Daniel Berger Michael Kim J.J. Spaun Andrew Novak Justin Lower and Lee Hodges fell out after qualifying for last week AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am via the Swing 5. Jordan Spieth was a shot away from cracking the Swing 5 and bumping out Novak, though Spieth will still play Genesis on a sponsor invite.

Tiger Woods, President Donald Trump play golf on Sunday morning ahead of Trump's Super Bowl visit
Before Tiger Woods returns to PGA Tour action next week at Torrey Pines, he is playing a round of golf with President Donald Trump in South Florida. Woods joined Trump on Sunday morning at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, according to multiple outlets that received official confirmation from the White House. Trump is also expected to attend the Super Bowl this evening in New Orleans. Woods, meanwhile, will soon fly to San Diego, where he will compete in his first official PGA Tour event since The Open, Woods' own Genesis Invitational, which moved from Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles to Torrey's South Course in La Jolla because of the recent Palisades fire. Woods owns eight career titles at Torrey, including the 2008 U.S. Open, though he has not completed 72 holes since last April's Masters. Trump met with PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and player director Adam Scott in Washington, D.C., early last week to discuss the ongoing negotiations between the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. While the Tour didn't mention Woods as having attended the meeting, the flight-tracking X account, @radaratlas2, did show Woods' jet landing at Dulles airport last Monday night before departing for South Florida early Tuesday morning. Woods' name was, however, included on a PGA Tour statement, which read, 'We are grateful that [Trump's] leadership has brought us closer to a final deal, paving the way for reunification of men's professional golf.' Woods announced on Tuesday that his mother, Kultida, had died at age 80. 'My mom was a force of nature all her own, her spirit was simply undeniable,' Woods said. 'She was quick with the needle and a laugh. She was my biggest fan, greatest supporter, without her none of my personal achievements would have been possible.' Trump took to social media to offer his condolences to Woods. 'I was just informed that Tiger Woods' wonderful mother, Kultida, passed away – she has gone onto greener fairways!' Trump wrote in a post. 'Kultida Woods was an amazing influence on Tiger and gave him much of his strength and brilliance. Melania and I send our love and prayers to Tiger and his incredible family!' Trump and Woods have played golf before. Trump also presented Woods with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019.
