Tremors shaking Japan's Tokara island chain top 2,000
Weather officials in Japan say the number of tremors that can be felt by humans has topped 2,000 around the Tokara island chain in the country's southwest. The officials are calling for people to remain vigilant for more earthquakes that could measure lower 6 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of zero to 7. Seismic activity intensified on June 21 around the islands of Akusekijima and Kodakarajima, which are part of Toshima Village in Kagoshima Prefecture. A powerful earthquake measuring lower 6 hit Akusekijima on July 3, followed by two jolts with intensities of upper 5 on July 6. Another quake measuring lower 5 struck on July 7. The Japan Meteorological Agency says that a total of 2,046 tremors with intensities of one or higher have been observed in the sea off the Tokara islands as of 4 a.m. Tuesday. There were 83 on Sunday, 39 on Monday and two on Tuesday as of 4 a.m. The sea off the island chain went through a series of earthquakes in 2021 and again in 2023. But the current swarm has been far larger in terms of the number of jolts.

More than 1,800 tremors hit Japan's Tokara island chain since June 21
Authorities are warning of more earthquakes around the Tokara island chain in Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Japan. More than 1,800 tremors perceptible to humans have hit the region in recent weeks. The Meteorological Agency urges people to stay cautious for quakes measuring up to about lower 6 on the Japanese scale of 0 to 7 for the time being. Officials in Toshima Village are considering when 64 residents who evacuated can return to their homes on the islands of Akuseki-jima and Kodakara-jima. They plan to make a decision as early as July 17, if no earthquakes with an intensity of at least 4 occur for five consecutive days. The officials have sent nurses to support more than 60 people who remain on the two islands. A powerful quake measuring lower 6 on Japan's intensity scale hit Akuseki-jima on July 3. It's the largest since the heightened seismic activity began on June 21. As of 5 p.m. on Friday, there have been 1,861 quakes with an intensity of at least 1. The daily figure dipped on Wednesday and Thursday. The region experienced multiple quakes in 2021 and 2023, but there have been far more in the latest sequence.

Another nurse to join healthcare team on Japan's quake-hit southwestern island
Another nurse is scheduled to join a healthcare team on a remote southwestern Japanese island that has been rattled by a series of earthquakes. The nurse is to be dispatched to Akusekijima in Toshima Village in Kagoshima Prefecture on Monday. The team carries out such jobs as giving health consultations to residents. It currently consists of three members -- two resident nurses and another who was sent to the island on Saturday. Seismic activity has increased around Akusekijima and Kodakarajima, another island within the village, since June 21. They are part of the Tokara island chain. A powerful quake rocked Akusekijima on Thursday, registering an intensity of lower 6 on the country's scale of zero to 7. Toshima officials have so far helped 59 residents evacuate from the village to the city of Kagoshima by ship. The first group of 13 people from Akusekijima arrived in the city on Friday. The second group of 31 individuals from Akusekijima and another 15 from Kodakarajima reached the city on Sunday. The officials say 23 people remain on Akusekijima while another 41 are on Kodakarajima. Those remaining include livestock farmers. The officials say they will consider organizing more evacuations if they receive requests.

More residents evacuate quake-hit remote islands in Japan
A total of 46 evacuees left Akuseki and Kodakara islands aboard a ferry Sunday morning from the village of Toshima, in Kagoshima Prefecture, after a series of strong earthquakes rocked the Tokara island chain. The ferry, operated by the village, was scheduled to arrive at Kagoshima Port in the prefectural capital of Kagoshima later in the day. This is the second time that residents of Akuseki Island have evacuated, but the first time for those from Kodakara Island. The series of earthquakes with their epicenters in the seas around the Tokara chain began on June 21. A jolt measuring lower 6, the third highest on the Japanese seismic intensity scale, was observed on Akuseki Island on Thursday. This helped prompt 13 residents of the island to evacuate via a ferry to the city of Kagoshima on Friday. Akuseki Island experienced earthquakes measuring an upper 5 on Saturday and Sunday. Kodakara, located close to Akuseki, has also been hit by many earthquakes, including one that measured lower 5 on Wednesday.
