Studio Ghibli adds folding fans to its anime specialty store in Japan
Totoro and No Face whisk you away to enchanted worlds. With the humidity beginning to rise in Japan, Studio Ghibli is here to provide some much needed relief with two folding fans dedicated to My Neighbour Totoro and Spirited Away. The first fan depicts the Totoros from My Neighbour Totoro, in a cooling nighttime forest scene. Totoro and the smaller Medium Totoro can be seen blowing into their ocarinas as they do in the film. On the other end of the fan you'll find the Small Totoros hanging out on a branch, watching the fireworks as many people do during summer in Japan. The attention to detail continues beneath the design, where you'll be greeted by charming Totoro cutouts every time you open the fan. The second design is adorned with camelias and characters from Spirited Away. No Face stares out from the floral setting as a scattering of Soot Sprites scamper about, carrying their beloved star-shaped komeito candy pieces. ▼ Stretching across the fan is Haku, in dragon form… ▼ …and on the bottom, cutout details tip the hat to natural elements like bamboo leaves. With fans being an essential everyday item on summer outings, you'll need a bag to store them in, and there are four varieties to choose from, two of which are new for summer. ▼ The new bags feature No Face, with the kanji 'ゆ' ('Yu') acting as a nod to the bathhouse in the film… ▼ …and Totoro, with a Soot Sprite. Unfortunately, the blue Totoro bag proved to be so popular that it sold out soon after it was released on 31 May. However, two designs have been restocked, including one with an image of Totoro, in a traditional yellow-toned Japanese colour known as 'yamabuki'. The final fan bag is an indigo-hued variety featuring No Face, again with the character 'ゆ', but this time the character is looking over its shoulder, in a pose that recalls the moment a cooling wave of water splashes against him during the train journey scene. The fans retail for 4,070 yen (US$28.33) each and the bags for 1,540 yen each, and they can be purchased at Donguri Kyowakoku stores and online, while stocks last. If flat fans are more your thing, Studio Ghibli has you covered there too. Studio Ghibli releases new Totoro tenugui anime art for the rainy season in Japan
Traditional techniques bring centuries of craftsmanship to Totoro. Japan is a country of many seasons, and the one that's about to begin is rainy. Known as 'tsuyu' in Japanese, the rainy season generally hits the mainland around mid-June, which is just enough time for us to put up a seasonal decoration with Totoro as the star. Sold by the Studio Ghibli specialty retail chain Donguri Kyowakoku, this new product is both decorative and functional as it's a beautifully dyed tenugui. These traditional cotton cloths can be used as hand towels, handkerchiefs, head coverings, and wraps for lunch boxes or gifts, but a lot of the time they're used as wall decorations, due to their beautiful designs. ▼ This tenugui has a particularly beautiful design called 'Rain Stripe' The rainy scene, depicting Totoro in his forest home, has been stenciled onto the fabric using a traditional hand-dyed method called 'chusen'. The raindrops blend harmoniously with the background stripes, which are slightly wavy as opposed to being straight, in a style known as 'yoroke-jima' ('wobbly stripes'). Because the fabric is dyed using traditional techniques the colours may bleed slightly, especially at the beginning of use. The more you use it, the more character it will develop over time so you can enjoy the unique colours that only an authentic hand-dyed tenugui can offer. ▼ As there are no seams, the cloth dries quickly and has a stronger resistance to dirt and dust. The cute frog in the corner of the tenugui completes the scene, with blue hues designed to keep you cool as the humidity rises. With each tenugui hand-dyed individually by a craftsman, these are like miniature works of art, and they can be purchased for 3,740 yen (US$26), at Donguri Kyowakoku stores and online, while stocks last. Totoro Mini Pouches are enormously cute【Photos】
Big Mini and Medium Mini Ghibli pouches are like little functional plushies. In laymen conversations, the name 'Totoro' tends to get tossed around to refer to this guy. But as educated anime zoologists know, the gray forest spirit indicated by the arrow in the above image is just one of three distinct Totoros. Technically, he's the 'Big Totoro,' not to be confused with the blue 'Medium Totoro' or white 'Small Totoro.' So it is, arguably, just a bit confusing that Studio Ghibli specialty shop Donguri Kyowakoku is now offering a 'Big Totoro Mini Pouch,' but any extra effort our brains need to parse that description is more than offset by the joy the design gives our hearts. The zippered pouch is part of what Donguri Kyowakoku calls its wazakka line, with wazakka loosely translating to 'Japanese-style housewares and accessories.' The rustic, course-touch fabric is meant to evoke traditional Japanese textiles, and the designers say the pouch is especially well-suited to stuffing in the sleeve of your kimono to store important stuff as you head out to a summer festival, though with it looking this adorable, there's never really a bad time to use it. And don't worry, they made sure to include the Big Totoro's tail too. Of course, the Big Totoro Mini Pouch name implies the exitance of other-size Totoro Mini Pouches, and sure enough, there's one for the Medium Totoro too! Though the big gray guy is the most famous Totoro, you could argue that the Medium Totoro is the more appropriate muse for a pouch, since in the anime he's often depicted carrying around a sack of acorns, though that isn't part of the pouch's design. Despite their 'Big' and 'Medium' names, though, both Mini Pouches are identically sized, at 10 centimeters (3.9 inches) in height and 90 centimeters across. They're also priced the same, at 1,980 yen (US$13.65) and share the same style of leafy zipper pull. Both the Big and Medium Totoro Mini Pouches are available now thanks to a restock, but oddly enough there doesn't seem to be a Small Totoro Mini Pouch available. Maybe it's coming soon, but for the time being the Big Totoro pouch can be ordered through the Donguri Kyowakoku online shop here, and the Medium one here. 27 Products From Etsy That'll Improve Your Life In Some Way Or Another
A book lamp that fits neatly onto your bookshelf so you don't have to worry about mounting, electrical work, or other tiresome chores that aren't cuddling up with a book. The linen-shaded lamp comes with a long, 8-inch cord that you can easily snake through the back of your bookcase. And a book tracker bookmark you can fill out every time you finish a new book. It's so encouraging to be able to actually see progress! A solid lotion bar shaped like Totoro or Rilakkuma that's so cute, you may never actually use it. But you should because the almond butter-based lotion will make your skin feel softer than the Catbus. (I just assume a furry bus would be super soft?) A REALLY cute hanging diffuser that'll make your car smell like a fancy spa. Or, if you get the mountain lodge scent, a roaring fire beside a sea of evergreens. A 2-in-1 hair bun maker to create an *actually* effortless bun in no time flat. Just slip your hair through the device, wrap it, and bend it into your desired shape. As a bonus, it also curls damp, straight hair, so it's a solid heatless styling option. A brass sardine keychain, which is already cute, but nothing compared to the AMAZING TIN it comes in. Pro move: Use this keychain for your spare set of keys so guests can get a kick out of your unique storage situation. A set of Sheet Keeper bands ready to keep your sheet sets together and properly labeled. GOODBYE, frantically searching for a matching pillowcase before your guests arrive in 30 minutes. Or a bedding holder to hide your poorly folded fitted sheets in tidy-looking bundles. The bags, which come in three sizes, are meant to hold and compress your bedding to save room and keep your sets together. A sheet of stickers with little checkbox droplets to help keep track of your water intake. Place them in your agenda as a cute reminder to stay hydrated. A made-to-order ceramic soap dish that'll hook neatly over the side of your sink with a cleverly placed drainage hole to keep things fresh and slime-free. Under-cabinet containers you can install in areas that were previously considered at capacity. They maximize space under sinks, in pantries, and beneath shelves, meaning you can finally fit even more stuff in your home! The jars are airtight and self-sealing when you put them back, so you can store anything from coffee beans to cotton swabs in them. Custom photo magnets so you can showcase all your favorite memories without worrying about your photos getting creased or stained. And a Michael Scott mood magnet that lets you broadcast how you're feeling, like annoyed on the days Toby escapes from the annex. Personally, I would have the square firmly on "excited" every day if I had this. 🤭 A linen couch cover to protect your sofa from The Horrors (cat puke, spilled wine, cookie crumbs) so thoroughly, it'll be like they were never there at all. Minimalist, coastal grandmother lifestyle, here we come. Nostalgic bath pearls for anyone who misses taking a truly fun bath. Throw a couple into your tub, put on "Candy" by Mandy Moore, and recapture some '90s magic. A macrame fruit hammock so all your produce has a cool place to hang out that's not the usual space-hogging bowl. A mini mindful moment candle kit that'll encourage you to take a breather while lighting a candle and zoning out for a sec. The no-drip, honey-scented beeswax candles burn for about 20 minutes and come with a pretty brass stand and presentation box. A UFO abduction lamp to add a little Mulder to your otherwise Scully-esque desk. It comes with a color-changing remote so you can pick whatever hue matches the moo-d (sorry). An Oven Cleaning Kit complete with oven scrub, all-purpose cleaner, and a metallic sponge because you can't rely on the self-cleaning feature alone. I know, I know, but someone had to say it: Your oven is gross, and you can't keep neglecting that now-opaque window. It's made in small batches with natural ingredients (like citric acid, glycerin, and essential oils), so it's safe for your family, pets, and home. Reviewers said this worked when all other cleaning attempts failed. A genius T-shirt roll holder that'll keep all your shirts tidy, easily accessible, and out of your drawers (meaning more space for more clothing). A pair of suede Mary Janes with fuzzy lining for anyone who wishes they could wear their clogs year-round but requires a liiittle more insulation. Wear them inside or out, with socks or bare feet — the world's your slipper! A reusable hemp coffee filter that can be used daily for *years* — if this has taught me anything, it's that a ton of kitchen waste could be totally avoided! A "hilarious" mug covered in dad jokes that will come in handy when you need a groan-worthy gag ASAP. A pack of record dividers for vinyl collectors who need to do a little more organizing. It'll feel like you're record shopping through your own collection and might even help you rediscover old purchases. Reusable beeswax food wrap that'll keep your food fresh without being too wasteful. Goodbye, mountain of crumbled tin foil and plastic wrap! I will never miss you. Jumbo alpaca wool dryer balls for your really big laundry jobs. Comforters, coats, blankets, and curtains won't even THINK about bunching up when they see these things enter the dryer. They're also a great eco-friendly, hypoallergenic alternative to dryer sheets. And a teeny-tiny masterpiece painted by an actual, real-life rat. We all know rodents are great chefs, but it turns out they're also artistic! A skilled team of rats paints on 2-inch canvases using washable kids' paint with paws and brushes. Wow, my life is better just thinking about these petite Picassos. :')
