Studio Ghibli adds folding fans to its anime specialty store in Japan

Totoro and No Face whisk you away to enchanted worlds. With the humidity beginning to rise in Japan, Studio Ghibli is here to provide some much needed relief with two folding fans dedicated to My Neighbour Totoro and Spirited Away. The first fan depicts the Totoros from My Neighbour Totoro, in a cooling nighttime forest scene. Totoro and the smaller Medium Totoro can be seen blowing into their ocarinas as they do in the film. On the other end of the fan you'll find the Small Totoros hanging out on a branch, watching the fireworks as many people do during summer in Japan. The attention to detail continues beneath the design, where you'll be greeted by charming Totoro cutouts every time you open the fan. The second design is adorned with camelias and characters from Spirited Away. No Face stares out from the floral setting as a scattering of Soot Sprites scamper about, carrying their beloved star-shaped komeito candy pieces. ▼ Stretching across the fan is Haku, in dragon form… ▼ …and on the bottom, cutout details tip the hat to natural elements like bamboo leaves. With fans being an essential everyday item on summer outings, you'll need a bag to store them in, and there are four varieties to choose from, two of which are new for summer. ▼ The new bags feature No Face, with the kanji 'ゆ' ('Yu') acting as a nod to the bathhouse in the film… ▼ …and Totoro, with a Soot Sprite. Unfortunately, the blue Totoro bag proved to be so popular that it sold out soon after it was released on 31 May. However, two designs have been restocked, including one with an image of Totoro, in a traditional yellow-toned Japanese colour known as 'yamabuki'. The final fan bag is an indigo-hued variety featuring No Face, again with the character 'ゆ', but this time the character is looking over its shoulder, in a pose that recalls the moment a cooling wave of water splashes against him during the train journey scene. The fans retail for 4,070 yen (US$28.33) each and the bags for 1,540 yen each, and they can be purchased at Donguri Kyowakoku stores and online, while stocks last. If flat fans are more your thing, Studio Ghibli has you covered there too. Totoro Mini Pouches are enormously cute【Photos】

Big Mini and Medium Mini Ghibli pouches are like little functional plushies. In laymen conversations, the name 'Totoro' tends to get tossed around to refer to this guy. But as educated anime zoologists know, the gray forest spirit indicated by the arrow in the above image is just one of three distinct Totoros. Technically, he's the 'Big Totoro,' not to be confused with the blue 'Medium Totoro' or white 'Small Totoro.' So it is, arguably, just a bit confusing that Studio Ghibli specialty shop Donguri Kyowakoku is now offering a 'Big Totoro Mini Pouch,' but any extra effort our brains need to parse that description is more than offset by the joy the design gives our hearts. The zippered pouch is part of what Donguri Kyowakoku calls its wazakka line, with wazakka loosely translating to 'Japanese-style housewares and accessories.' The rustic, course-touch fabric is meant to evoke traditional Japanese textiles, and the designers say the pouch is especially well-suited to stuffing in the sleeve of your kimono to store important stuff as you head out to a summer festival, though with it looking this adorable, there's never really a bad time to use it. And don't worry, they made sure to include the Big Totoro's tail too. Of course, the Big Totoro Mini Pouch name implies the exitance of other-size Totoro Mini Pouches, and sure enough, there's one for the Medium Totoro too! Though the big gray guy is the most famous Totoro, you could argue that the Medium Totoro is the more appropriate muse for a pouch, since in the anime he's often depicted carrying around a sack of acorns, though that isn't part of the pouch's design. Despite their 'Big' and 'Medium' names, though, both Mini Pouches are identically sized, at 10 centimeters (3.9 inches) in height and 90 centimeters across. They're also priced the same, at 1,980 yen (US$13.65) and share the same style of leafy zipper pull. Both the Big and Medium Totoro Mini Pouches are available now thanks to a restock, but oddly enough there doesn't seem to be a Small Totoro Mini Pouch available. Maybe it's coming soon, but for the time being the Big Totoro pouch can be ordered through the Donguri Kyowakoku online shop here, and the Medium one here. Studio Ghibli releases new Totoro neckties to brighten up your office wear

Anime ties and tie pins that'll start a conversation. Studio Ghibli characters have a way of brightening our spirits on even the most tiring days, so when you need a lift in the office, a Totoro necktie will definitely put a smile on your face. Now, there's not one but 12 silk neckties to choose from, and each one contains subtle nods to the film so they'll fit right in with your everyday office attire. ▼ The first design, called 'Rain Panel', is particularly timely for the June/July rainy season. From a distance, the tie looks like it's adorned with polka dots, but up close you can see it's actually raindrops and Soot Sprites making up the bulk of the design, with Totoro holding an umbrella at the bottom, as a nod to the rainy scene from the film. The tie is available in three colourways: ▼ Beige ▼ Navy ▼ Wine The next trio of ties is dubbed 'Leaf and Check', with a classic plaid design… ▼ …that features forest leaves with small Totoros. ▼ This style is available in Blue, Navy, and Wine. ▼ Next up, we have the cutely named 'Opening'. As the name suggests, this design features motifs seen in the opening credits of the film, with cobwebs and forest creatures pictured alongside the Catbus and Small Totoro. ▼ The colourways for this style are Navy… ▼ … Dark Green… ▼ … and Grey. ▼ Finally, we have the 'Leaf Hide-and-Seek' design. This design, with Totoro blowing into an ocarina and a small Totoro hiding amongst glistening leaves, will catch the light and start a conversation. ▼ The colourways here are Turquoise… ▼ … Navy… ▼ … and Wine. ▼ Each tie comes with a Studio Ghibli label on the back… ▼ … and is packaged in its own box, with the Studio Ghibli logo on the front. Coinciding with this new release is a restock of My Neighbour Totoro brass tie pins, in five designs. ▼ 'Corn' ▼ 'Notes' ▼ 'Long Umbrella' ▼'Twig' ▼ 'Leaf and Acorn' ▼ Each tie pin comes in its own box, ideal for gifting and storing. Whether you prefer a subtle hint to Totoro or a slightly more flashy design, these neckties and tie pins will have you covered for any type of formal occasion. The ties are priced at 9,350 yen (US$64.98) each, while the tie pins retail for 5,500 yen each, and they're all available to purchase now at the Donguri Kyowakoku store and online (links below), while stocks last. Studio Ghibli releases new My Neighbour Totoro scrunchie and ribbon sets in Japan

Enhance your style with subtle nods to the anime film. When you're a fan of Studio Ghibli, any chance to enhance your wardrobe with a splash of anime magic from the films is one worth taking. However, there are times when a more subtle dash of Ghibli is needed, and for those occasions we have the My Neighbour Totoro Scrunchie and Ribbon Set. Perfect for days out or even workdays at the office, the set is available in two designs, starting with the Amadaidai (Sweet Bitter Orange). Ideal for summer, the citrus design will add a burst of colour to your outfit, with small Totoros and tiny Soot Sprites acting as subtle nods to the movie. ▼ You can wear the scrunchie on its own… ▼ … or together with the ribbon for a more elegant look. ▼ The second design is Ai Hanabi (Indigo Fireworks). Like the first set, the scrunchie and ribbon can be used as hair accessories… ▼ … or switched up to coordinate your look. This is another design that's perfect for summer, a time when fireworks displays are typically held up and down the country, with cute details showing Soot Sprites at the centre of the firework bursts, and small Totoros running through the design, with one even holding a forest leaf. The scrunchie measures 10 centimetres (3.9 inches) in diameter while the scarf measures 6 x 70 centimetres. The two are sold in a set for 1,980 yen (US$13.88) but will be relatively hard to get, as they can be purchased at the Donguri Kyowakoku online store (links below) but not at all of the chain's bricks-and-mortar stores in Japan. They will be available at some Donguri Kyowakoku stores overseas, which is good news if you're in Hong Kong, Taiwan, China or South Korea. Japanese traditional Ghibli gift set lets you give Totoro teatime to a fellow fan…or yourself

Even the bundle of this three-piece bundle is a treat for fans of the anime icon. There's quite a bit of gift-giving that goes on in My Neighbor Totoro. Mei's desire to deliver a present to her mom in the hospital kicks off the Studio Ghibli anime's final-act crisis, and Mei and Satsuki cement their friendship with Totoro by giving him an umbrella while they're waiting for their buses in the rain. But perhaps the most memorable gift is the one Totoro gives them in return for the umbrella, a packet of maybe-magical seeds wrapped up in a mambo leaf. And if you'd like to give someone in your life a little Totoro magic, or at least some Totoro -themed warm fuzzy feelings, Ghibli specialty store Donguri Kyowakoku is offering a charming Totoro Gift Set. Instead of an actual bamboo leaf (which would be too small), the bundle comes wrapped in a furoshiki, a Japanese decorative wrapping cloth which can also be used like a bag or sling, depending on how it's tied, or, alternatively as a tapestry or other interior decoration. The all-cotton furoshiki's pattern features a number of Soot Sprites hiding amongst the greenery, and in the corner is a Small/white Totoro, positioned such that when the gift set is bundled up, the forest spirit will be standing up at the top of the knot. The furoshiki is beautiful by itself, but there are more gifts inside. This cylindrical container, wrapped in traditional washi paper with illustrations of Totoros walking through the forest, is a tea case. Inside are eight tea bags of Donguri Kyowakoku's special-blend Donguri Tea. While donguri is the Japanese word for 'acorn,' the tea is actually a blend of kuromame (black bean) and genmai (brown rice) teas with jujube and quercus salicina leaf. And because the can is made of sturdy stainless steel, you can use it to store other things long after you've drunk your last cup of the tea that comes inside it. Ah, but what to pour that tea into? Simple: the Totoro teacup that makes up the third part of the Totoro Gift Set. This is what's called a yunomi in Japanese, meaning a teacup with no handle. The gently rounded sides of this particular design help make a heartwarming mental association with Totoro's chubby cuddliness. The bundle is priced at 5,280 yen (US$36) and can be ordered here through the Donguri Kyowakoku online store, where they describe it as a way to 'give a soothing, relaxing time with Totoros,' and we say there's nothing wrong with giving that present to yourself.
