JADE at Mighty Hoopla review: Already the stuff of main pop girl legend

'It's no Saturdays megamix…' quipped Jade Thirlwall onstage at London's Mighty Hoopla yesterday, after an energetic, top-tier Little Mix medley that sent Brockwell Park into meltdown. A stand-up comic couldn't have scripted a better, more perfectly contextualised joke: no shade to the Saturdays, whose back catalogue is near-unsurpassed in quality; it's just the world-conquering, 10-year-spanning oeuvre of Little Mix is simply unparalleled. In less capable hands, this whistle-stop store of the band's best moments – 'Sweet Melody', 'Touch', 'Shout Out To My Ex'; she earlier performers fan favourite 'Wasabi' in its entirety – all reworked so as to sound fresher, but with the lightest of touches so as not to taint their essence, might have overshadowed the rest of the set. A plausible Little Mix reunion certainly would have done. Jade, however, is a straight A student of pop, and intentional in everything she does. Her cowgirl outfit was a nod to the Supremes' Diana Ross, for heaven's sake. Thus, this was a statement of solo star power, and possibly the most exciting moment Hoopla has ever seen. Exhaustive choreo, grand, futuristic production and Adele-level charisma between songs – we could listen to Jade say 'Houplah!' in Geordie twang all day long – this was a big, big swing, and in the end, more than the sum of its parts. It's hard to believe the nine-song set was so short, and that we were in a park in south London. It felt like we were in an arena with the roof blown off. You could almost sense the collective support of girl band members gone solo before her – Destiny's Child, the Spice Girls, the Sugababes – propelling her forward. Although, unlike many of these women, Jade is going decidedly against the grain, and what she has to offer is all the more compelling for it. 'If I don't win, I'm in the bin, you say you never knew me, but when I pop off you sue me,' she sang on chaotic first single 'Angel of My Dreams', with an arch self-awareness suggesting that, actually, if she measures success on her own terms, she can't lose. And so, like that one daring member of many a girl band, she's charting a course that's miles left of centre. This zany, unpredictable set – club-ready visuals Charli XCX would approve of; dancers in tutus regardless of gender; walls of electronic sound flipping to a cappella moments – reflected that choice. For all the bells and whistles, however, it's the technical prowess of Jade's voice – think Disney Princess gone rogue – that impresses most. She flaunts full-throated volume on 'FUFN' but sends an eerie hush across the 60,000-strong crowd with her operatic control on a soaring cover of Madonna's 'Frozen'. (Who else would dare?!) As for that complicated Sandie Shaw 'Puppet on a String' vocal run on 'Angel of My Dreams' – it's even better live. (Again, who else would dare?!) She played one unreleased song, 'Plastic Box', but we were whipped into too much of a frenzy to make mental notes about it, except to say it slams. We really couldn't be more excited for Jade's upcoming album That's Showbiz Baby, for her music has an essentially queer sensibility: rather than trying to appeal to everyone, it appeals to a minority. A cool, intelligent, edgy, kind, ascended minority, if we do say so ourselves. And while the LGBTQ community is not solely that minority, we definitely make up a large swathe of it. We embrace her, she embraces us, and so last night the love-in brought Jade to tears. The energy was off the scale. Her allyship remains unmatched: nothing could have prepared us for the moment when, while leading a chant to introduce the F-bomb-tastic 'FUFN', she called out JK Rowling. It was a rock star moment that made the hair on the back of the arms stand on end. The backbone and the grit of this woman, when so many of us are running scared and feeling the walls closing in on us, when so many of our allies are losing their nerve, is breathtaking. It's superhero stuff in the vein of Judy Garland in the 70s and Madonna in the 80s and 90s, and won't be forgotten. KATSEYE's Manon Bannerman Reveals the Inspiration Behind Her Viral Eyebrows

Bea Oyster Back in January, KATSEYE member Manon Bannerman inspired a major beauty movement. Some celebrities become known for a signature feature that fans wish to emulate: Rihanna's scent, Sabrina Carpenter's bangs, Bella Hadid's style, and more. For Manon, it was her sharp, straight eyebrows. The 22-year-old Dream Academy alum debuted alongside the other KATSEYE members — Daniela Avanzini, Lara Raj, Megan Skiendiel, Sophia Laforteza, and Yoonchae Jeong — in June 2024. Since then, they have risen to fame with the hit song 'Touch' and viral moments aplenty on social media. Along the way, they've similarly grown their fashion profiles, working with Coach and scoring custom looks from Anna Sui. Soon after, they expanded into the beauty world with their signature makeup looks. Known for her strong straight brows, TikTok began recreating Manon's eyebrow shape to try for themselves. The results left them impressed, and seemingly others as well, since they're getting thousands of likes and hundreds of comments, even one from Manon herself. Kate is one of the TikTok users who brought the look to our FYPs. 'I've always been into the whole 'thin and straight brows' trend, but I was very scared of the result,' she told Teen Vogue. 'People kept telling me that my brows were my best feature and that I should not touch them. However, I've been obsessed with Manon from KATSEYE since September 2023, and I don't know, something about her makeup and brows is just beautiful.' She originally tested the look out for herself by using concealer to cover the length and arch of her eyebrows, which she also recommends doing for anyone thinking of trying out the look for themselves. 'If you want to try changing something on your face, you should definitely experiment with changing the shape of your brow,' she adds. Mumtas is another TikTok user who tried out the look and went viral. The video earned over one million views, and she even caught the attention of Manon herself, who commented, 'wow.' Many other commenters asked for a tutorial, which Mumtas later uploaded, so others could get the look themselves as well. Now, we finally know how Manon got into the style herself. As it turns out, Manon was inspired by others as well. In her cover interview with Teen Vogue, Manon shared that she was inspired by her friend Sophie. 'She has her eyebrows really thin and straight, and she kind of inspired me and I did the same, and now we're both just rocking these brows,' Manon says. 'But I got to give her her credit.' Manon was also convinced by another pop star like herself. 'Doja Cat also had her era where she had thin brows and straight brows, and that also inspired me.' In addition to her signature brows, Manon also reveals that she had barely-there bleached brows in the past, too. She says, 'I just like to change it up.' Frank Zampino resigned from engineering firm after reports of his trips on Tony Accurso's yacht, corruption trial told

By When Frank Zampino left politics in 2008, his next job was with one of the engineering firms that took part in the bid-rigging scheme he is alleged to have organized while he was president of the city of Montreal's executive committee. Zampino's final days as the head of the committee was one of the last things he testified about Monday in his own defence over the course of three days in a trial that began early in February. His lawyer, Philippe Morneau, announced late in the afternoon to Quebec Court Judge Silvie Kovacevich that he had no further questions for his client. The judge then told the lawyers of the four other men charged in the same trial that she would let them think overnight about whether they want to cross-examine Zampino on Tuesday before the prosecution will. Before the day came to an end on Monday, Morneau asked Zampino about his decision to step down as the head of the executive committee in 2008 and about his next job as chief financial officer and an executive vice-president for Dessau, one of the 13 engineering firms that took part in the bid-rigging scheme. The job at Dessau came with a $250,000 annual salary, but Zampino said he felt he had to resign a few months after he started when reports by La Presse surfaced about how he had taken trips on the Touch, a yacht owned by construction magnate Antonio (Tony) Accurso. Years after the reports surfaced, Accurso was convicted on criminal charges involving his role in a similar bid-rigging scheme run by former Laval mayor Gilles Vaillancourt for many years. Accurso ended up serving time behind bars for being part of the massive collusion scheme. On Monday, Zampino said he left politics on his own terms and that he began planning his departure in 2007. 'I obviously announced this to the mayor (Gérald Tremblay). He was the first one that was made aware, close to two weeks before the announcement (was made public at a press conference at city hall). I had asked him to keep it confidential, which he did. He was obviously not expecting that news. I explained it to him and he very much accepted my decision, although I was not finishing my mandate.' 'Why did you decide to leave before the end of your mandate,' Morneau asked. 'I was actually contemplating this before the 2005 election, through a personal reflection on my part,' Zampino said, adding he wanted to give Tremblay a year and a half to find his replacement before the next election. Zampino said the next thing he did was take 'an extended vacation' in Europe with his wife, but before they left he was offered a position with Dessau by Jean-Pierre Sauriol, then the engineering firm's chief executive officer. 'It was a nice company and a growing company, a nice Quebec company that was growing fast and prosperous,' Zampino said. 'It looked extremely interesting to me. Its revenues were close to three-quarters of a billion dollars. 'This is why I accepted the position.' Zampino started at Dessau in January 2009, but the reports about what turned out to be two trips on Accurso's yacht surfaced a few months later and he resigned in April 2009. Zampino also told Kovacevich that he insisted on being billed for his vacations on the Touch and that he paid Accurso $10,000 in total. 'In the midst of your discussions (to be hired at) Dessau, were you aware that Dessau was part of a bid-rigging scheme in Montreal or anywhere else,' Morneau asked. 'Absolutely not,' Zampino said. 'I had no idea of what was going on in Montreal. There was never any discussion of a bid-rigging scheme whatsoever.' Zampino said he left Dessau following 'an intense 10-day period' when media were publishing many reports about politicians and union representatives who took long trips on Accurso's yacht. By the third day, Zampino said, he had a meeting with Sauriol and his brother Rosaire, also an executive with Dessau, and offered his resignation. 'I said that I didn't like what was going on in terms of (Dessau's) image,' he said. 'They had refused it at the time. Jean-Pierre said: 'No, let's ride the storm. It will go away.' It did not go away.' Earlier on Monday, Zampino was asked for his reaction to Rosaire Sauriol's testimony in the trial. When he was asked if he considered Zampino to be a friend, he told the court: 'No, we had a business relationship.' 'I was quite surprised at the answer. Rosaire Sauriol was someone I had known since 1998, from my days (as a politician) in St-Léonard,' Zampino said, adding Dessau purchased an engineering firm that had done most of the infrastructure work in St-Léonard along with SNC-Lavalin. 'I got to know (Rosaire Sauriol) back then, in the '90s, and over the years we had a professional relationship that totally turned into a friendship.' On Sept. 20, 2017, Rosaire Sauriol admitted he was part of the Laval bid-rigging scheme that Accurso was a part of. Sauriol pleaded guilty to one count of breach of trust and was sentenced to two years of probation and ordered to pay a $200,000 fine.

Katseye Reveal Their Secret Lip Combos—and Admit ‘Gnarly' Is ‘Not a Song for Everyone'

Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy. Have you found yourself saying 'gnarly' quite a bit recently? If so, it's probably thanks to the global girl group Katseye. Birthed through the tears and tribulations of winning The Debut: Dream Academy (a talent reality show which whittled down 120,000 hopeful applicants into six), Katseye members Lara Raj, Daniela Avanzini, Sophia Laforteza, Manon Bannerman, Yoon-chae Jeung, and Megan Skiendiel each came from a different part of the world to form one happy, mega-pop family. Lara tells me, 'It's like Manon has said, 'We're a friend group that somehow got famous and made music together.'' They've also continued to bond through shared experience, no matter how exciting or strange. Their most recent hit, 'Gnarly,' widely confused the internet. Upon first reception, people were puzzled by the unusual lyrics (which include repeating the word 'gnarly' up to 40 times). But over the past few weeks, the song has become a TikTok ear worm, with singers and fans like Laufey praising the track and creating their own versions. Now that the world has come around to their side, Katseye is partnering with beauty brand Glossier as the new faces of Lip Glaze, a serum-like lip oil, and just announced their second album, Beautiful Chaos. ELLE talked to the group about their secret lip combos, their feelings on the 'Gnarly' about-face, and why chaos can be beautiful. Manon: Recently, we've all been rocking straight brows. Lara: Manon did it, and it is kind of her thing. Mine was definitely in the SIS and 'Touch' era. It wasn't my look. I was so inspired by her and thought it looked so cute and snatched so well. Then I tried it, and it was not 'it.' But for some people, like her, it really gives. Sophia, the internet has widely requested your lip combo. Can you share what it is? Sophia: My lip combo is literally not a combo. It's literally just lip care. I always say, 'You will never gonna catch me with a chapped lip.' If your lips are hydrated, it makes anything that you put on your lips look good. When I sleep, I use a thick, thick lip mask, and I look crazy. When I wake up, I exfoliate, and put on a lip oil like the Lip Glaze, so it sits perfectly. So you don't use a lip liner? Sophia: No. Lip hydration is my secret. When I don't drink enough water, my lips get a little more dull [in color]. When I do drink water, the natural pink of my lips comes out. I can tell how I'm taking care of myself [by what color] my lips [are.] I don't know how to use lip liner. Actually, I was trying to do Lara's brown lip liner on myself, and then I looked crazy. It was not my thing. What are your various lip combos? Daniela: For me, I use the Anastasia Lip Liner in mauve. I either use a lip balm or Aquaphor, and then I'll use the Lip Glaze and blend it all out. Or if I want more of a matte [look], I'll put some balm on my finger and tap it in, so that it still smears around but isn't that glossy. Lara: Recently I've been using Cloud Paint in the center of my lips. Then I always do a brown lip liner—literally any brand, from the drugstore or Amazon. It just needs to be dark brown. Then I'll over line, and I'll use the Lip Glaze or the Laneige mask, and I'll put it on over top. Yoon-chae: I put foundation on first. I use a soft, lighter pink lip liner. Then I'll put on a really soft, light color lip balm and a lip tint in the center. Megan: I didn't really have a lip routine because I didn't really like the feeling of anything on my lips. Now, I'll put on more sheer things, like the Lip Glaze or Clinique Black Honey. Manon: I'm the same as Megan. I just use Aquaphor. Manon, you've said that people might be 'in shock' after hearing your most recent song, 'Gnarly.' What did you mean by that? Manon: We felt like people had to see the performance, and us dancing it, because it is such a performance-heavy song. At first, they were a little shocked, which I get. We were too. But also, it's not a song for everyone, and that's totally okay. It doesn't need to be. We don't want to shove it down anyone's throat. It's a very weird, odd song, and if you get it, you get it, and if you don't, you don't. Lara: I feel like the song's purpose is more of a statement. Yes, I blast 'Gnarly' in my car all the time, and I love to listen to it. But for some people, it doesn't digest as much as a [regular] listening song. The purpose of the song is to show our identity as Katseye. This is our new era. What kind of statement do you think 'Gnarly' makes? Lara: 'Gnarly' is very jarring, but it's also carefree. It's chaotic, and that's the whole message of this new era: beautiful chaos. This who we truly are as Katsye. We're loud, funny, and always extremely, extremely chaotic. As we've developed our identity as a group, we've learned that more and more. We tried a lot in the early days to be cool and nonchalant, shove down that part of ourselves, but I don't think we could. 'Gnarly' is the perfect way to show that and own it. Megan: We have a lot of moments where we're [high frequency] and we're like, 'Oh my god, we have to reel it back. Let's gain back the aura.' But every time that we try to do that, we literally can't. It's in our personalities to just be loud and crazy, and we have just decided to embrace that at this point. Sophia: We have tried. When we do fan meets, we used to be like, 'Okay guys, we have to be like mystical beings.' But when we get there, we're yelling and [acting like we are] hanging out with our besties. We are cheesing. When we come out on the stage, we're supposed to be like, Aura. But then we start smiling so big that our photos are like [extremely huge smiles]. Lara: A big reason for this is that we are genuinely friends with each other. With each day, we become closer. That really shows, and it's hard to suppress. You've said that the word 'gnarly' can have many meanings and be open to interpretation. Do you feel like that's also the case with the word 'chaos'? Sophia: When you think chaos, it gets messy and [feels like] a lot, as in, there's so much going on. It's overwhelming. We define it by putting it along with the word beautiful. Beautiful chaos [means] even though it's all over the place, it's something that is truly captivating. It's beautiful because there is a juxtaposition of push and pull. Individually, each of us are beautifully chaotic. Do you have an overall theme for your makeup looks for your videos? Lara: Before each show or video, there's always some sort of mood or Pinterest board. It has an overall cohesive look. [For example,] we are all going to do a really bold eye look. Our makeup artists always find a way to individualize it for each of us. Can you guys tease anything from the mood board for your next song? Lara: I will say: a red lip.
