5 NASCAR Drivers Having Breakout Seasons in 2025
The 2025 NASCAR schedule is flying by, with just a few races remaining before the playoffs begin. There have been 21 races in the Cup Series this year, 20 in the Xfinity Series, and 15 at the Truck level. That's more than enough to highlight some drivers who are making names for themselves this year. Let's examine the top NASCAR drivers enjoying breakout seasons, including one each from the Xfinity Series and the Truck Series. Connor Zilisch His performance at the Xfinity Series level should erase any doubts. Recognized as one of the best road course racers in all of NASCAR, he came through immediately at COTA. However, Zilisch then had a bit of an acclimation period on the ovals against veteran Xfinity drivers. In the last eight weeks, he's shown why he's replacing Daniel Suárez at Trackhouse Racing in the Cup Series next season. Connor Zilisch stats (): 674 points, 4 wins, 11 top-10s, 9 top-5s, 4 poles, 406 laps led, 7.421 average starting position, 10.684 average finishing position in 19 races Zilisch is the only driver at either level who put up a great fight against Shane van Gisbergen on road courses, beating him once (Sonoma) and finishing a close second (Chicago). Just as impressive, Zilisch has a 2.25 average finishing position in the last eight races, delivering three wins (Pocono, Sonoma, and Dover). It's obvious at this point that Zilisch is a superstar. Related: Chase Briscoe There are big shoes to fill when you are chosen to replace Martin Truex Jr. in the No. 19 car at Joe Gibbs Racing. While Chase Briscoe has been in the Cup Series for a long time, the 30-year-old faced massive expectations and pressure. He's risen to the moment and made the most of his opportunity with JGR. Coming off a second-place finish at Dover, just a week after placing second at Sonoma, Briscoe is now tied with teammate Christopher Bell for the second-most top-5 finishes (eight) on the team. He's done this, mind you, just a few weeks after a DNF at Atlanta (35th) that came after one of the hardest crashes into the wall in the Next Gen era. Briscoe is putting it together lately, evidenced by three top-5s in the last five weeks, and he'll be dangerous in the playoffs. Chase Briscoe stats (): 570 points, 1 win, 10 top 10s, 8 top 5s, 4 poles, 192 laps led, 11.238 average starting position, 14.048 average finishing position in 21 races Related: Shane van Gisbergen With his only competition being Riley Herbst, Shane van Gisbergen was the heavy favorite to win Rookie of the Year in the Cup Series. Trackhouse Racing made him a full-time driver, believing he could win a road course race and guarantee himself a spot in the playoffs. He won three. It's not just that SVG's expertise on road courses leads him to victories where his peers lack experience (Mexico City) or where he historically dominates (Chicago Street Race). It's also the fact that, despite being one of the least-experienced drivers at Sonoma, he went out there and essentially raced himself to victory. Plus, SVG is showing real progress on ovals now. He's going to be a perennial playoff driver for years to come. (2025): 374 points, 3 wins, 4 top 10s, 3 top 5s, 4 poles, 208 laps led, 22,238 average finishing position in 21 races this season Related: Ryan Preece If you aren't one of the top NASCAR drivers with JGR, Hendrick Motorsports, or Team Penske, it's easy to get overshadowed. That's especially true if one of your best finishes of the season is wiped out for having three shims instead of two. At 34 years old, Ryan Preece is having a career-best season. Preece finished second at Talladega, only to have that outstanding points day disqualified. It might end up costing him a playoff spot, but he's still delivered 10 top-20 finishes and five top 10s in the last 11 races. Preece's average finishing position (17.10) is well above his previous career-best from 2023 (20.83) and he has more top 10s this year (eight) than he did in the last two seasons combined. Through 21 races, he (17.1) is neck-and-neck with Ty Gibbs, Kyle Busch and Joey Logano in average finishing position (17.0) : 484 laps led, 8 top 10s, 1 top 5, 56 laps led, 18.286 average starting position, 17.095 average finishing position Kaden Honeycutt In his first season as a full-time driver in the Truck Series, Kaden Honeycutt has proven he belongs at this level. While the 22-year-old is still seeking his first win as a NASCAR driver, he's gotten close several times this season. Through 15 races, Honeycutt is fifth in the NASCAR standings, and he's tied with Tyler Ankrum for the fifth-most top-10s (nine). He's certainly found a home at the Truck Series level and might even earn himself another shot to appear in an Xfinity Series race or two next season. Denny Hamlin Holds Off NASCAR Field On Old Tires Following Rain Delay at Dover
Denny Hamlin won Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race at Dover, breaking the four-way tie and becoming the winningest driver of the 2025 season. Hamlin led 67 laps, surviving three restarts in the closing ten laps en route to the victory. With practice and qualifying rained out this weekend, Hamlin started in 13th and wasn't a contender until the closing stage as he worked his way through the field. His teammates Chase Briscoe and Christopher Bell, along with Hendrick's Chase Elliott, were the main talking points as Elliott and Bell dominated early, with Bell spinning from the lead, or a battle for the lead twice. Early in the final stage, Bell spun from the lead, falling back to 22nd. With 65 laps remaining, rain began to fall, and Bell was slowing down, about to go to pit row, when the call was made to stay out. Bell and Austin Dillon were the last two to cycle through and reaped the benefits of the rain caution. Bell restarted up front after only slowly working his way back from 22nd. It seemed like after spinning from the lead, the rain would save Bell's day. Hamlin took the lead on the restart with 57 laps to go, with a bigger cell coming, which competitors and NASCAR knew would mean a red flag and whole jet drying period, the next 40 laps raced as if they were the final few. Finally, with 17 laps remaining, instead of the expected rain, Ross Chastain in the No. 1 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet brought out the yellow. He ended up blocking the entry to the pit lane as teams decided what would be best to set up the final sprint, which would run after the rain. The race was red-flagged with 13 laps remaining as the heavy rain passed over the track, saturating it completely. The race resumed around an hour and 15 minutes following the red flag, with the top seven teams staying out on old tires. Ryan Blaney, in eighth, was the first to pit for two tires. On the restart, the fifth row was the first with new right-side tires, with Briscoe on the high line in tenth. Briscoe was the biggest mover on the restart, making it up to sixth before Bell spun again, this time while trying to pass Hamlin for the lead. Bell's spin collected the No. 24 of William Byron running fourth and Noah Gragson, who stayed out to join the leaders in eighth. Briscoe restarted behind his teammate, with the Hendricks of Elliott and Larson on the inside. The No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota would push Hamlin to the lead on the first attempt of an overtime Green-White-Checkers finish. Zane Smith and Ryan Preece crashed in the midfield to bring out the caution before the white flag was captured. On the next GWC restart, Briscoe lined up next to his teammate on the front row with fresher right-side tires. Hamlin would hold on at the start and pull away on the second half of the final lap to record his second straight win at Dover and the 58th win of his career. 4 Tyler Reddick Landing Spots if He Leaves 23XI Racing after 2025
Tyler Reddick is one of the best NASCAR drivers right now and is among the select few perennial championship contenders in the sport. With his contract allowing him to leave 23XI Racing if the team loses its charter, there is plenty of speculation about what could happen after this season. It should be made clear that an in-season change isn't going to happen. While 23XI is running as an open team for the foreseeable future, Reddick isn't leaving anytime soon. He will finish out the season in the No. 45 car and likely wait until the winter, when a ruling on the antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR is expected. If the courts rule against 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports, leaving them as unchartered teams, Reddick will have plenty of options for 2026, as multiple top teams would pursue him. Let's examine a few potential landing spots for him if that happens. No. 99, Trackhouse Racing There aren't many open seats available for next season, with a large majority of drivers currently signed to multi-year deals or having signed extensions through 2026. However, Trackhouse Racing announced that Daniel Suárez won't be back next season, creating an open seat for the No. 99 car. Connor Zilisch, one of the top NASCAR prospects, is the likely pick for the ride. However, that's assuming Tyler Reddick does not become available. If he does, Trackhouse Racing could add a championship-caliber driver to its third car, pairing him with likely perennial multi-race winner Shane van Gisbergen and playoff threat Ross Chastain. Related: No. 48, Hendrick Motorsports Alex Bowman's backing from Ally and his placement in the NASCAR standings make his seat with Hendrick Motorsports pretty safe, as long as a better driver doesn't become available. Reddick is the superior driver, and he would give Hendrick Motorsports arguably six of the best drivers in the Cup Series. That is certainly an opportunity that would be too good to pass up, even with the relationships Bowman has with the team. If Reddick were to leave, there would at least be open spots at Trackhouse Racing (No. 99) and 23XI Racing (No. 45) for Bowman next season. Related: No. 11, Joe Gibbs Racing It would certainly be ironic if Reddick left Denny Hamlin's team to take the No.11 car at Joe Gibbs Racing. Hamlin has been expected to return to JGR next season, but there's been no word that a new contract is in place. That at least leaves the door open to an intriguing scenario. An arrangement could be made where Reddick takes over the No. 11 car, with Hamlin sliding into the No. 45 car as a driver for the team he co-owns. After a very quiet NASCAR silly season, it would at least add some intrigue for next season. Related: No. 2, Team Penske Teams like Front Row Motorsports, Legacy Motor Club, Richard Childress Racing, and Spire Motorsports would certainly love to add a driver of Reddick's caliber. However, there's no sense in him going to a team that wouldn't give him a realistic shot at competing for a championship. So, the focus needs to be on the top teams. Austin Cindric's father, Tim Cindric, was fired from Team Penske over the IndyCar cheating scandal. Austin is still under contract through 2026, and Roger Penske has said he'll be back. However, that came with the assumption that Reddick wouldn't be available. If he is, Team Penske could pursue a change.
