Denny Hamlin Holds Off NASCAR Field On Old Tires Following Rain Delay at Dover
Denny Hamlin won Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race at Dover, breaking the four-way tie and becoming the winningest driver of the 2025 season. Hamlin led 67 laps, surviving three restarts in the closing ten laps en route to the victory. With practice and qualifying rained out this weekend, Hamlin started in 13th and wasn't a contender until the closing stage as he worked his way through the field. His teammates Chase Briscoe and Christopher Bell, along with Hendrick's Chase Elliott, were the main talking points as Elliott and Bell dominated early, with Bell spinning from the lead, or a battle for the lead twice. Early in the final stage, Bell spun from the lead, falling back to 22nd. With 65 laps remaining, rain began to fall, and Bell was slowing down, about to go to pit row, when the call was made to stay out. Bell and Austin Dillon were the last two to cycle through and reaped the benefits of the rain caution. Bell restarted up front after only slowly working his way back from 22nd. It seemed like after spinning from the lead, the rain would save Bell's day. Hamlin took the lead on the restart with 57 laps to go, with a bigger cell coming, which competitors and NASCAR knew would mean a red flag and whole jet drying period, the next 40 laps raced as if they were the final few. Finally, with 17 laps remaining, instead of the expected rain, Ross Chastain in the No. 1 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet brought out the yellow. He ended up blocking the entry to the pit lane as teams decided what would be best to set up the final sprint, which would run after the rain. The race was red-flagged with 13 laps remaining as the heavy rain passed over the track, saturating it completely. The race resumed around an hour and 15 minutes following the red flag, with the top seven teams staying out on old tires. Ryan Blaney, in eighth, was the first to pit for two tires. On the restart, the fifth row was the first with new right-side tires, with Briscoe on the high line in tenth. Briscoe was the biggest mover on the restart, making it up to sixth before Bell spun again, this time while trying to pass Hamlin for the lead. Bell's spin collected the No. 24 of William Byron running fourth and Noah Gragson, who stayed out to join the leaders in eighth. Briscoe restarted behind his teammate, with the Hendricks of Elliott and Larson on the inside. The No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota would push Hamlin to the lead on the first attempt of an overtime Green-White-Checkers finish. Zane Smith and Ryan Preece crashed in the midfield to bring out the caution before the white flag was captured. On the next GWC restart, Briscoe lined up next to his teammate on the front row with fresher right-side tires. Hamlin would hold on at the start and pull away on the second half of the final lap to record his second straight win at Dover and the 58th win of his career. 4 Tyler Reddick Landing Spots if He Leaves 23XI Racing after 2025
Tyler Reddick is one of the best NASCAR drivers right now and is among the select few perennial championship contenders in the sport. With his contract allowing him to leave 23XI Racing if the team loses its charter, there is plenty of speculation about what could happen after this season. It should be made clear that an in-season change isn't going to happen. While 23XI is running as an open team for the foreseeable future, Reddick isn't leaving anytime soon. He will finish out the season in the No. 45 car and likely wait until the winter, when a ruling on the antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR is expected. If the courts rule against 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports, leaving them as unchartered teams, Reddick will have plenty of options for 2026, as multiple top teams would pursue him. Let's examine a few potential landing spots for him if that happens. No. 99, Trackhouse Racing There aren't many open seats available for next season, with a large majority of drivers currently signed to multi-year deals or having signed extensions through 2026. However, Trackhouse Racing announced that Daniel Suárez won't be back next season, creating an open seat for the No. 99 car. Connor Zilisch, one of the top NASCAR prospects, is the likely pick for the ride. However, that's assuming Tyler Reddick does not become available. If he does, Trackhouse Racing could add a championship-caliber driver to its third car, pairing him with likely perennial multi-race winner Shane van Gisbergen and playoff threat Ross Chastain. Related: No. 48, Hendrick Motorsports Alex Bowman's backing from Ally and his placement in the NASCAR standings make his seat with Hendrick Motorsports pretty safe, as long as a better driver doesn't become available. Reddick is the superior driver, and he would give Hendrick Motorsports arguably six of the best drivers in the Cup Series. That is certainly an opportunity that would be too good to pass up, even with the relationships Bowman has with the team. If Reddick were to leave, there would at least be open spots at Trackhouse Racing (No. 99) and 23XI Racing (No. 45) for Bowman next season. Related: No. 11, Joe Gibbs Racing It would certainly be ironic if Reddick left Denny Hamlin's team to take the No.11 car at Joe Gibbs Racing. Hamlin has been expected to return to JGR next season, but there's been no word that a new contract is in place. That at least leaves the door open to an intriguing scenario. An arrangement could be made where Reddick takes over the No. 11 car, with Hamlin sliding into the No. 45 car as a driver for the team he co-owns. After a very quiet NASCAR silly season, it would at least add some intrigue for next season. Related: No. 2, Team Penske Teams like Front Row Motorsports, Legacy Motor Club, Richard Childress Racing, and Spire Motorsports would certainly love to add a driver of Reddick's caliber. However, there's no sense in him going to a team that wouldn't give him a realistic shot at competing for a championship. So, the focus needs to be on the top teams. Austin Cindric's father, Tim Cindric, was fired from Team Penske over the IndyCar cheating scandal. Austin is still under contract through 2026, and Roger Penske has said he'll be back. However, that came with the assumption that Reddick wouldn't be available. If he is, Team Penske could pursue a change. 5 NASCAR Drivers on the Hot Seat Right Now
The NASCAR silly season has been almost non-existent in 2025, with the majority of top drivers in the Cup Series signed to multi-year deals or having agreed to extensions before the summer. While the top-tier drivers are safe in their seats for next season, there are a few others who might be fighting over the next few weeks to secure a spot in the Cup Series for 2026. Let's examine our list of the NASCAR drivers on the hot seat nearing the end of the regular season. Daniel Suarez, Trackhouse Racing Trackhouse Racing has already confirmed that Daniel Suarez won't return after this season. What puts the 33-year-old among the NASCAR drivers on the hot seat is the fact that he's racing for his future in the Cup Series. Suarez's results this season – 29th in NASCAR standings – suggest he'll have to settle for a ride with a bottom-tier team or spend next season as a top competitor in the Xfinity Series. The Cup level certainly pays more, but long-term viability at this playing field might be more likely if he dominates at the Xfinity level next year. Related: Cole Custer, Haas Factory Team Cole Custer has had plenty of opportunities in the Cup Series in recent years. After a three-year stint (2020 through 2022), he returned to the Cup level with the Haas Factory Team for the 2025 campaign. While he certainly hasn't been helped by driving one of the weakest cars in the field, it's also becoming clear that this level might be too much for him. Across 20 races this season, Custer is one of just two drivers (along with Cody Ware) with five or fewer top-20 finishes. Nepotism is keeping Ware in his seat next season; Custer doesn't have that advantage. The fact of the matter is that he might only be good enough for the Xfinity Series. Riley Herbst, 23XI Racing The antitrust lawsuit filed by 23XI Racing could give Bubba Wallace and Tyler Reddick the ability to leave and sign with other teams if there aren't charters available for them in 2025. Even if that scenario doesn't fully materialize, the amount of money 23XI Racing is spending on this legal fight — along with the financial impact of running as an open team — is significant. That situation puts Riley Herbst on particularly dangerous footing. He's been one of the least competitive NASCAR drivers in 2025, currently sitting 35th in points (258), with an abysmal average finishing position of 25.45. The sponsorship money he brings from Monster Energy is the primary reason he remains in the seat. If 23XI Racing needs to cut costs further or loses its third charter, Herbst could be forced to return to the Xfinity Series. Justin Haley, Spire Motorsports Carson Hocevar looks like an emerging star for Spire Motorsports, and Michael McDowell gives the team a shot at every road course. Together, Hocevar and McDowell have combined for seven top-10s and four top-5s. All of this is to say that equipment isn't the reason Justin Haley finds himself 32nd in points this season, with just a single top-10 finish and only three laps led through 20 races. Consecutive seasons finishing outside the top 30 in the standings are bound to catch up with him, and it should come as no surprise that there is at least some buzz that he could be replaced this offseason. Alex Bowman, Hendrick Motorsports Of all the NASCAR drivers considered on the hot seat, Alex Bowman is by far on the safest ground. He's currently tied for the fifth-most top-10 finishes in the Cup Series and ranks 10th in laps led this season. However, what at least puts him on the watch list is the fact that he's viewed as the 'fourth car' at Hendrick Motorsports—a team with championship-level expectations for all its drivers. Bowman has only one win over the last three seasons, which raises questions about long-term upside. If a top-tier driver were to become available, such as if Tyler Reddick leaves his current ride, Bowman's seat could potentially be in jeopardy. Van Gisbergen rivals can breathe easier in Dover
Fans of other NASCAR drivers can find solace that Shane van Gisbergen, who has travelled halfway around the world to dominate the Cup Series for three of the past five weeks, likely won't make it four of six. That's because the drivers are heading to Dover Motor Speedway for Sunday's AutoTrader EchoPark Automotive 400 at the challenging, one-mile concrete venue in Dover. It follows more than a month of Down Under destruction on the road courses by New Zealand's SVG, who won three times and vaulted to third in the playoff standings with his win at Sonama. However, the Trackhouse Racing driver has only been a blip on the radar outside of road courses, recording only four finishes inside the top 20, including a pair of 20th-place showings, with a season-best 14th at Charlotte. This is the lone stop in the nation's first state. The last two-race season at Dover was in 2020 with back-to-back 311-lap events won by Denny Hamlin and Kevin Harvick on consecutive days to lessen travel during COVID. Now there's just one frightening visit to the track ominously called "The Monster Mile" because of its 24-degree banking, self-cleaning wrecks as cars slide down to the apron, and gruelling 400 laps, though it was an even worse 500 until Dover's second race in 1997. The past four winners in Delaware since 2020 include a pair of Chevrolet and Toyota drivers each - bowtie wheelmen Alex Bowman and Chase Elliott and Camry pilots Martin Truex Jr. and Hamlin, respectively. Bowman's 2021 triumph was historic as he led Hendrick Motorsports to a 1-2-3-4 finish, marking just the fourth time ever in NASCAR that a quartet of teammates captured the top spots. Last season in late April, after earlier winning on the Bristol and Richmond short tracks, Hamlin started sixth after seeing Kyle Busch earn the pole and beat Hendrick Motorsports' Kyle Larson by 0.256 seconds for his 54th career win. Earlier that week on his podcast, Hamlin had basically called his shot by saying he expected to win, then went ahead and did just that. "You'd better win if you're going to open your mouth, that's for sure," the Joe Gibbs Racing driver said after leading a race-high 136 laps in his No.11. However, the victory was the last of 2024 for Hamlin as he went without checkers from May through November. The Tampa-born Hamlin is one of three drivers in Sunday's field who holds multiple Dover victories. The defending winner has won twice along with Elliott, while Busch won in 2008, 2010 and 2017. With 12 different winners possessing playoff positions, the winless Busch stepped it up last Sunday at Sonoma by finishing 10th and gaining nine points on the cut line, which has Bubba Wallace sitting in 16th. Wallace was not in contention to beat van Gisbergen, a three-time Supercars champion and Bathurst 1000 winner, at Sonoma - no one was, really - but he did gain one point on 17th-place Ryan Preece by accumulating 15 stage points as he stayed out on long runs.
