Elderly woman dies after SUV crashes into fast-food joint

IPOH : A 73-year-old woman who was hit by a sports utility vehicle that crashed into a fast-food restaurant in Setiawan last night has died.
Manjung district police chief Hasbullah Abd Rahman said the woman was pronounced dead at 10.56pm yesterday after receiving treatment at the emergency ward of Seri Manjung Hospital.
He said seven other victims – four men, two women, and a girl, aged between five and 38 years – sustained minor injuries and received treatment at the same hospital.
'Police investigations at the scene found that a Volvo XC90 vehicle, driven by a 29-year-old man, was coming from the direction of Kampung Koh and heading towards Sungai Wangi.
'When it reached the traffic lights intersection in front of the fast-food restaurant in Setiawan, the driver is believed to have lost control, veering to the right before crashing into the restaurant and hitting eight customers, comprising seven adults and one child,' he said in a statement today.
Hasbullah said his team detained the vehicle driver who was also injured in the accident.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
