21 States That Have The Absolute Worst Food In The U.S.

If you're anything like me, you might've grown up watching a heck of a lot of food and travel shows on TV. Whether it was the Travel Channel, Food Network, or Destination America, I loved learning about food from different parts of the country — both the good and acquired tastes. So, I asked BuzzFeed readers from around the country to share "the worst regional American food" they've ever tasted, for science, of course. Here are 21 of the dishes they shared: Wisconsin: Cannibal Sandwiches "I'm not from Wisconsin and have never seen and will never try this! Apparently, in the Milwaukee area, there is this thing called a 'Cannibal Sandwich': raw hamburger meat mixed with raw onion on a bun. I've confirmed with multiple people from Milwaukee and the internet that this is real!"—fluffygazelle652"In some areas of Wisconsin, it is called 'Wildcat'. I've lived here my whole life and have only seen it once at a party."—spiritedlight8833 Pennsylvania: Altoona Pizza "Altoona pizza. It's supposedly famous and good. Well, it's an abomination of pizza. It starts off with a nice Sicilian-style crust, and then American cheese is placed on top of a perfectly good pizza."—Anonymous, 39 State College, PAThis mid-century Altoona classic is topped with marinara, green bell peppers, salami, and, of course, American cheese. Arkansas: Mountain Oysters —Anonymous, 65, Cordova, TNIf you're not familiar, Mountain Oysters have nothing to do with seafood. They're actually battered and fried bull testicles. Ohio: Skyline Chili "Hey Ohio...I do not see the fuss…"—beatnikinsc"Cincinnati Chili in Cincinnati itself. Get outta here with that stuff. Spaghetti? And the chili is, like, sweet? And not at all spicy? Calling it chili is incorrect. This is weird white people beef pasta. I'm sorry, Ohio. No."—Anonymous, 46, Minneapolis"We moved to Ohio a couple of years ago. I'd heard about Cincinnati chili before coming here but had never tried it. It is an abomination. I mean, gross. What fresh hell is this?"—Anonymous, 57, OhioSkyline Chili is a chain that serves Cincinnati chili, which is Greek-inspired and usually served over hot dogs or spaghetti, then covered in cheese. Its flavor is described as sweet and savory, with more emphasis on spices like cinnamon and clove than your traditional American chili seasonings. Georgia: The Luther Burger —Anonymous, 35, NJThe thing that separates a Luther Burger from a regular, schmegular burger is the bread. Rather than your traditional hamburger bun, it's served on a donut. Alabama: Alabama White Barbeque Sauce "In Alabama, they have this weirdly vinegary white barbecue sauce that they SWEAR by. It overwhelms anything I've tried it on and not in a good way."—Anonymous, Ben, KSIngredients, of course vary, but white barbeque sauce is typically made with mayo, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, and spices. Maryland: Maryland Stuffed Ham "Hey kids, do you want your boiled ham stuffed with greens that look like grass clippings? Then I've got the holiday food for you! Stuffed Ham is a southern Maryland Christmas tradition that goes back over 200 years and needs to end."—christopheri3Maryland Stuffed Ham is a corned ham filled with cabbage, kale, and onion stuffing and is served cold. The Midwest: Bologna Salad Sandwiches "Ground Baloney Sandwiches are served on brioche bread with mayo and relish. Think like a tuna sandwich, but the meat is ring baloney instead of tuna. It's a Midwestern thing, and it's disgusting. "—Anonymous, 25, Utah Alaska: Alaskan Ice Cream "Also known as Akutaq. This once-popular Alaskan dessert morphed from wild berries mixed with blubber or tallow to loads of white sugar whipped in Crisco with either berries or chopped candies."—Anonymous, 66, AlaskaAkutaq is a Native Alaskan — specifically, Athabaskan — dessert. It can also be flavored with fish or meat. Utah: Funeral Potatoes "I don't know why these exist. It should be categorized as a hate crime against potatoes and humanity. It is almost as if the potatoes have unnecessarily died twice, and if you are able to choke it down, they died for the third time. The best way of preserving what little dignity there is left in those wasted potatoes is to toss it into the trash and set it on fire until there is nothing. Not even ashes can be found in the aftermath."—Anonymous, 30, CalforniaThis cheesy potato casserole, famously popular amongst Mormons, is made with potatoes (either fresh and cubed or as defrosted hashbrowns), cream of chicken soup, sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese, and cornflakes. Missouri: St. Louis-style Pizza —Anonymous, 39, Los Angeles, CASt. Louis-style pizza is made with a thin, unleavened crust that's topped with a sweet tomato sauce and Provel cheese (which is Swiss, cheddar, and provolone cheese combined with liquid smoke). It's typicaly served as a square rather than a slice. Massachusetts: Creamed Oysters "Creamed oysters from Cape Cod."—Anonymous, 48, Shoreline WA, USAAlso known as Oyster Stew, it's pretty much exactly what it sounds like: oysters in a cream-based sauce. It's kind of like a thinner, more minimalist clam chowder. It's described as having a more seafood-forward flavor, and rather than being loaded with potatoes or other veggies, oyster stew keeps it simple with celery (or celery salt) and is usually seasoned with pepper. Pennsylvania: Scrapple "Philadelphia: top 3 worst:1. Scrapple 2. Scrapple 3. Scrapple"—Anonymous, 43, PhiladelphiaHence the name, Scrapple is a meat pudding made with pork scraps (including organs), spices, and cornmeal. It's usually pan-fried until crispy and eaten with breakfast. It originated with the Pennsylvania Dutch. Georgia: Boiled Peanuts "Tasted like, well, I can't describe how awful it was. Why would anybody pay good money for this???"—Anonymous, 73 Cincinnati Ohio"I bought some at some roadside gas station somewhere between Atlanta and Augusta. They tasted otherworldly-level salty, but OK, except that within 15 minutes, I was in the throes of migraine aura, like my vision was completely 'overexposed' to a degree I could barely see anything. Then, I had an actual seizure during that migraine. It was the worst one of my entire life. It took me a couple of weeks to recover and feel normal again. They must put a LOT of MSG in those suckers."—Anonymous, 31, Canada The Midwest: Ambrosia Salad "I think it's more of a midwestern dish, but I was forced to try it at a church potluck in Georgia. Weird texture, no taste, and is overall gross."—Anonymous, 30 and Atlanta, GAWhile inclusions vary, it's traditionally a whipped cream-based salad with coconut, mandarins, pineapple, and colorful marshmallows. Maryland: Beaten Biscuits "Beaten Biscuits. I have a neighbor from Maryland; he LOVED it. So awful."—Anonymous, 65, San JoseThe recipe dates back to the start of the 19th century. Reportedly, the name comes from the way the dough has air "beaten" into it, as yeast isn't involved in the recipe (as it was much harder to come by back in the day than it is today). They're described as being harder, drier, and tougher than a classic biscuit, with a more mild flavor. The South: Grits "I'm from the North, a true Yankee, but live in the South now. Anything with GRITS has got to go!!🤢🤮"—AnonymousGrits are essentially a porridge made from ground-up white corn or hominy that's been boiled. Texas: Frito Pie "FRITO PIE here in Austin. Disgusting "—Anonymous, 32, Austin, TexasFrito Pie is a Southwestern casserole made with — you guessed it — Fritos, cheese, beans, enchilada sauce, and seasoned beef. Idaho: Fry Sauce "Anything with fry sauce. Idahoans love to claim this. It's basically just mayo and ketchup, arguably already the two worst condiments. Sometimes, they get wild and add seasoning salt. Disgusting. "—Anonymous, 45, Idaho New York: Pimento Cheese "Pimento cheese, just gross."—laughinggoat523Originating in New York but now popular in the South, Pimento Cheese is made of pimento red peppers (which are more sweet in flavor), cheddar cheese, and mayonnaise. Nebraska: Runza —Anonymous, 34, TexasConsidered a sandwich to some and a pastry to others, Runza is traditionally filled with ground beef, cabbage/sauerkraut, and onions. There's a chain restaurant of the same name in Nebraska known for them. Do you have a regional dish you think is the absolute worst in the U.S.? Costa Mesa's retail landmark Triangle Square to be featured on Travel Channel

Costa Mesa's iconic Triangle Square will soon take a turn in the national spotlight, as a handful of tenants at the 200,000-square-foot retail complex will be featured in a segment airing on the Travel Channel Friday. Hosted by Holly McDonald — a Costa Mesa resident and agent in Compass Real Estate's Newport Beach office — the roughly 5-minute segment is set to air at 7 a.m., spotlighting upscale Western-themed steakhouse Westwood Coast along with other restaurants and entertainment destinations at the center. Since last fall, McDonald has produced a string of episodic features on area neighborhoods, cultural institutions and hot spots as a Southern California host for 'American Dream,' a national real estate and lifestyle show streaming on Apple TV+, Amazon Prime Video, Roku and other outlets. Past installments have focused on trendy milkshake bar the Straw and Costa Mesa's South Coast Metro Area, while McDonald is working on another show about an upcoming push-ups for charity event to raise money for veterans. 'They deal with a variety of different things, but they're all positive and uplifting sides of the area,' said McDonald, a former producer of HGTV's 'House Hunters.' 'I scout out the stories and the locations — I'm pretty much doing all of it.' The segment featuring Triangle Square, McDonald's first to be picked up and broadcast on the Travel Channel so far, came out of a desire to explore a place that is familiar to many but has gone through some changes since it first opened in 1992. 'Obviously, Triangle Square is a landmark here in Costa Mesa. And it's kind of undergoing a renaissance right now,' McDonald said. '[But] if people just drive by, they may not know what's going on inside. It's more than just nightlife, but I don't think people realize that.' In a sit-down interview, Westwood Coast General Manager Michael Ruiz explains the increasing popularity of Western-themed entertainment in Orange County, particularly country line dancing, and why Costa Mesa was an ideal spot for the San Francisco eatery's sister restaurant. The segment also depicts scenes from Prince Street Pizza, La Vida Cantina, Cafe Sevilla and Tavern & Bowl, giving viewers a taste of a now fully-occupied retail space. It's a great way to showcase the progress that's been made at the center in recent years, according to Charity Dahlke, a property manager for Cannon TTM, which purchased Triangle Square in 2017. The owners had big plans for the property and were making major upgrades just before the COVID pandemic hit, changing consumers' shopping behavior and impacting the center's progress. Only now is that bigger vision starting to come to life, Dahlke said Wednesday. And the added exposure from McDonald's 'American Dream,' which focuses on the different kinds of elevated experiences visitors can have at the center, only serves to further that cause. 'Triangle Square has definitely gone through a bit of a metamorphosis lately,' the property manager said. 'This used to be a crown jewel in Costa Mesa, and now the owners are dedicated to getting this jewel back to where it was.'

Joe Rogan Haunted By Anthony Bourdain Death—'I Could Have Stopped Him'

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Joe Rogan felt there was something he could have done had he been with Anthony Bourdain on the day he died. Newsweek reached out to Rogan's representative via email for comment. The Context Bourdain was a chef, author and television personality known for his popular culinary travel shows including Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations and Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown. He had several New York Times best-selling books including Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly and Medium Raw. The New York native died on June 8, 2018 at the age of 61 after taking his own life. At the time, Bourdain was filming a new episode of Parts Unknown, according to CNN. His friend, Eric Ripert, found Bourdain unresponsive in his hotel room. "Anthony was my best friend. An exceptional human being, so inspiring & generous," Ripert said at the time on X, formerly Twitter. "One of the great storytellers who connected w so many. I pray he is at peace from the bottom of my heart. My love & prayers are also w his family, friends and loved ones." More; Jason Squires/WireImage What To Know On Friday's episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Rogan spoke out about his late friend Bourdain while chatting with chef José Andrés. "There's moments when people take their own life where the worst feeling is, 'I feel like if I was there, I could have stopped him from doing that,'" Rogan said. "You know, the feeling like he just was alone, and sometimes you just need to know that you're not alone and you're gonna be OK," the 57-year-old continued. "Like whatever you think is gonna be the worse thing that's happening here, it's not. You're loved. You're loved, you're an amazing person. There's so much more to see. You don't want to leave these people behind, you don't want to hurt them. You don't want to hurt these people in your life, you don't want to hurt your family, you don't want to hurt your daughter, you don't want to hurt your wife. Don't do it. I know it feels impossible, but it's because you're alone." The UFC commentator added: "Maybe I wouldn't have been able to do anything. Maybe I'm wrong. But there's that haunting feeling that I could've talked to him and go, 'Man.' That feeling f***ing sucks. That feeling of if I was there with him, I think we could've had some laughs, we could've joked around about some stuff, and we would've been OK." In response, Andrés said: "I know you think that's something I didn't close yet. Obviously I'm not going to talk on behalf of Eric [Ripert], but Eric was so strong, and Eric obviously was shooting with him in France when that happened." "I understand that feeling because I'm still going through it," he said, agreeing with Rogan's take on the matter. "It's OK to feel responsible because that means you care for those people. But the message here is that we all need to be checking always on each other. That's what friends are for." What People Are Saying Rogan and Bourdain had bonded over their love of UFC and jiu-jitsu, and Bourdain appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience in 2011. Despite the episode airing nearly 14 years ago, there are new comments on the podcast on Spotify. Steve Messina wrote on the streaming platform one week ago: "One of THE Greatest Artists of the past 50 Years... and so humble he didn't consider himself one." Tuomas Rimpinen said two months ago: "Rip Anthony, one of the realest celebrities." Rico B Larso added in a note six months ago: "Joe really admired this man. If you ever want sobbing just get Joe talking about anthony." People Are Discussing The Most Heartbreaking Celebrity Deaths That They'll Absolutely "Never Get Over," And I'm Crying Real Tears Right Now

At the risk of sounding a bit parasocial, nothing hits quite as hard as a beloved celebrity's death, especially when it happens super unexpectedly. It's like the world stops turning for a moment. And although these celebrity deaths are super sad to discuss, it also helps us fans feel united and comforted. So recently, we asked the BuzzFeed Community, "What celebrity death are you never going to get over?" Here's what people said: 1. Robin Williams died in 2014, at age 63. "I still cry for him sometimes. Such a legend, such a tragic way to go." – youngchipmunk74 "Everyone I know has a favorite Robin Williams movie, from my grandma all the way down to my friend's toddler. He was universally loved, and his was the only celebrity death that felt like I had lost a loved one. – rnd13001 2. Matthew Perry died in 2023, at age 54. "Matthew Perry is the first celebrity I actually grieved for. Being born in 1991, I literally grew up watching him on TV, and I really felt his loss. Especially because the circumstances were so horrible." – Megan Donovan 3. Liam Payne died in 2024, at age 31. "I was born the year One Direction started, was five when Zayn left, and was six when they went on an indefinite hiatus, so I'm more of a newcomer. However, I can say that I'm a big fan of their music and the boys themselves, so Liam's death hit me hard. I will say that I was in disbelief the days following his (Liam's) death and was hoping it was all a bad dream. However, it's been months, and I've finally come to terms with the fact that it was NOT a nightmare." – metallicvolcano835 4. George Michael died in 2016, at age 53. "I'm old, but for me it will always be George Michael. My first ever pin-up, a super talented songwriter, and an absolute sweetheart of a man. I did see him live once, and even though by that time I was a grown-ass adult, I cried several times. The absolute loss of my life." 5. Anthony Bourdain died in 2018, at age 61. "I remember watching Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations on the Travel Channel, and he made me want to drop what I was doing and go see the world. He always found the best hidden spots to eat because he had the utmost respect for the people and cuisine of each location. He just had this sincere, quiet vibe that was coated with a dry sense of humour. I wish he were still here to help us get through these dark days." 6. Naya Rivera died in 2020, at age 33. "When I read about Naya Rivera, right from the onset of reports that she was missing, it hit hard. I was crying. I hardly watched Glee, but it was the tragedy itself, the way she died protecting her son and will never know that she in fact saved him." – emmerzz0011 7. Natasha Richardson died in 2009, at age 45. "I still can't believe how Natasha Richardson (Liam Neeson's wife, and the mom in The Parent Trap) died in such a freak way. Like, she got up and thought she was fine, only to pass hours later from a brain hemorrhage, I think it was." – Mypersonalityispets 8. Alan Rickman died in 2016, at age 69. "I can't believe he's gone. He was a great actor and person from what I've heard and seen." – Mypersonalityispets 9. James Earl Jones died in 2024, at age 93. "He touched me deeply many times in his films. Also the voice of the greatest villain in all of cinema. He will be truly missed." – lazygamer141 10. Chris Farley died in 1997, at age 33. "He was the first celebrity death that made me openly sob. That man made me laugh my way through high school. Now I'm going to put on a too-small coat and pretend to live in a van down by the river. RIP you brilliant human; thanks for everything." – spicynothingbettertodo 11. Steve Irwin died in 2006, at age 44. 12. John Candy died in 1994, at age 43. He was the voice of Batman in a bunch of shows and games, starting with Batman: The Animated Series. A kind, sweet, talented man who lived a troubled life but was dearly loved by fans and colleagues alike. And he loved them all back." – KTomato 15. Cameron Boyce died in 2019, at age 20. 16. Michelle Trachtenberg died in 2025, at age 39. Jemal Countess / Getty Images "I think her and Cameron Boyce were the most tear-jerking for me. They had sooooo much potential and were amazing actors." – dizzytraveler493 17. Heath Ledger died in 2008, at age 28. J. Anthony Bourdain Movie 'Tony' Announces Actor Who Will Star As Legendary Chef

The career of actor Dominic Sessa is really cooking now that he's been cast as Anthony Bourdain in a new biopic. The actor, who was acclaimed in his debut role in 2023's 'The Holdovers' opposite Paul Giamatti, will portray the famed chef and TV host in the film 'Tony,' alongside Antonio Banderas. The film is set in 1976, and Sessa will portray a pre-fame Bourdain whose life changes while working and living in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Banderas' role is being kept under wraps, but shooting is expected to commence next month. Bourdain, after a career that took him from culinary school to becoming the executive chef of New York's Brasserie Les Halles, to best-selling author and TV host on CNN and the Travel Channel, committed suicide in June 2018. Social media had strong reactions, both on board and against the casting choice. Dominic Sessa was so good in 'The Holdovers', he gave such a nuanced, but powerful performance I believe will serve him well portraying the legendary Anthony Bourdain. And with the film being A24 and centering food, this will definitely be one of my most anticipated films. — Bella (🍿🫶🏾Cinematically Emotional) (@BellaLoveNote) April 23, 2025 I love this arc for Matt Johnson— from Youtube Show to A24 director.
