Daley's admission about Jake Trbojevic and Terrell May after Mitch Barnett blow
NSW coach Laurie Daley is considering former captain Jake Trbojevic and Tigers prop Terrell May as possible replacements for the injured Mitch Barnett having been forced to make a change for State of Origin 2. Fans were left devastated for Barnett after the NSW enforcer went down grasping at his leg on the weekend in the Warriors' win against the Rabbitohs. The Warriors forward was one of the best players for NSW with his aggression helping his team win field territory against Queensland in Origin 1. But after being ruled out for the rest of the season, Daley has been forced to look elsewhere to fill the position. Bulldogs prop Max King will likely shift to the starting side alongside Game 1 player-of-the-match Payne Haas, which leaves a front-row position available on the bench. Stefano Utoikamanu was a surprise selection in the NSW squad for Game 1, with many stunned Daley didn't go with May. Utoikamanu was on standby for Haas due to a quad injury, but Haas was later ruled fit to play. Speaking on Tuesday, Daley suggested Utoikamanu could slot right onto the bench having already been around camp for the series opener. However he didn't rule out bringing former captain Trbojevic back into the fold as NSW look to seal the series in Perth. Trbojevic captained NSW to the series win last year, but played very few minutes across the three games. The forward was on the cusp of being dropped for Game 1, but he suffered a concussion playing for club team Manly and it ended his chances of playing at Suncorp. Daley suggested on Tuesday that the experience of the former NSW captain could be handy for Game 2 in Perth. He also said May and Souths prop Keaon Koloamatangi will come into calculations amid some brilliant form at NRL level. 'You've got Terrell May there who has been playing some really good football this year for the Tigers,' Daley said on SEN Radio. 'We had Stefano (Utoikamanu) in camp… Stefano was going to come in if Payne (Haas) didn't come up so he's obviously one of the front runners. 'Keaon Koloamatangi's been excellent the last few weeks. He's another one we're looking at. Jake (Trbojevic) hasn't played football, but we're hoping he may be able to get some football this weekend and if he does, then I'm sure that a guy of his experience and leadership will come up in conversations as well.' Trbojevic's inclusion would raise some eyebrows with a number of front-rowers certainly exceeding his efforts in 2025. Across the last few weeks, Koloamatangi has arguably been the standout forward of the competition. Koloamatangi was moved to prop in recent weeks and has thrown up some barnstorming efforts having run for more than 200 metres in his last three games. On average he has made more than 40 tackles per game and scored against the Warriors on the weekend. Few could argue Koloamatangi deserves a call-up, but May has also been strong to start the season. But Daley is looking for that aggression that Barnett brought, which doesn't translate to stats. 'I think some of the work that Mitch (Barnett) did… when you go back and review the tape, some of the things you miss on game night,' Daley said. 'When you go back and analyze it, you just look at what he provided for the team. He was great and that to me is where it starts upfront, isn't it?" RELATED: Laurie Daley urged to backflip after NSW forward ruled out of Origin NRL fans left saddened over news about Tim Sheens and Robbie Farah Speaking after the announcement of his NSW Game 1 squad, Daley defended his decision to omit May. 'I think it was more about the fact that other players have been playing particularly well. Max King, what he's been able to do has been excellent," the coach said. "Terrell's playing some really good football and like all the others he's just got to keep banging down the door and his opportunity will come at some stage, But we just thought at this stage in Game 1 that's the team we wanted to go with. Max Deserves his chance. Stefano has really improved out of sight the past couple of weeks.'

Sea Eagles hope to have Tom Trbojevic back next week, but there's one thing that could get in the way
Anthony Seibold hopes to have skipper Daly Cherry-Evans back on deck for their big game against Brisbane on Saturday night, with the Sea Eagles coach hopeful that Tom Trbojevic will miss just one match as the club takes a conservative approach with their most important player. Cherry-Evans will be given until Saturday evening to make a final call on his availability, with the Sea Eagles missing a stack of stars for what will be their first NRL match against the Broncos at Brookvale since 2014. Trbojevic was ruled out on Tuesday after he aggravated the corked thigh that has been troubling him in recent weeks, with the superstar fullback tracking well to return for their next game against the Knights. 'The only thing that would hurt that is that we're on a five-day turnaround,' Seibold said. 'If it was a Sunday game, it would be 100 per cent certain that he'd play, so that'd be the only consideration that the medical staff have told me. 'He'll get moving again today. It's exactly the same issue he's had for a few weeks with that leg. He just needed a rest and will hopefully be right for next Thursday night. It's not a long-term injury.' The thigh issue is the latest setback for one of the game's most exciting players, with Trbojevic managing just one 20-game season since the start of 2019. The former Dally M winner has dealt with hamstring and knee issues over his career, and Seibold concedes the constant attention on Trbojevic's health has taken a toll. 'He is (frustrated). He's a very diligent guy and an extremely elite professional when it comes to his preparation and his reconditioning and his recovery and so on,' he said. 'Injuries are a part of the game. We're a contact sport, so this happens. If you look across the competition, this happens every week. 'Turbo gets put in the spotlight a lot, so that would make him feel uncomfortable that it's always in the news. 'This is the most minor injury or niggle, but we've got to look after him. As important as this game is, we're not even halfway through the season so that's why we're being conservative with Turbo.' He won't be the only Trbojevic missing on Saturday with Jake still in concussion protocols, while Seibold confirmed winger Jason Saab (illness) would miss the match between two teams fighting for a spot in the top eight. 'It's difficult because you want your best players on the park,' he said. 'We're down a couple of troops, but it shouldn't matter. We've got great belief in the guys that we put in the jersey, so I expect a really wholehearted performance. '(I want to see) a Manly performance where we're not looking at the scoreboard, we're showing lots of effort and we're having a crack for our mates and we make it really uncomfortable for the opposition, regardless who they are.'

Sydney club cops brutal triple blow
The Sea Eagles are hoping skipper Daly Cherry-Evans gets through the State of Origin opener unscathed after the club confirmed Tom Trbojevic was one of three stars ruled out of their game against the Broncos this weekend. Manly's ugly loss to the Eels has been made worse with news that their superstar fullback tweaked an existing thigh injury that has hampered him in recent weeks. In more bad news, Siosiua Taukeiaho and Jake Trbojevic will also miss the home game against Brisbane. 'Trbojevic has been playing with a corked thigh in recent weeks and aggravated the injury in last Friday's loss to the Eels. The club is taking a conservative approach and will rest their star fullback this weekend,' a club statement read. 'Taukeiaho picked up a minor calf strain against the Eels and he too is expected to miss just the one week. 'Jake Trbojevic will also sit out Saturday's match against the Broncos as he continues to follow NRL concussion protocol.' The superstar fullback has endured another rough start to the season, with Trbojevic missing out on the Origin team for Wednesday night's opener. Lehi Hopoate will shift to fullback against a Broncos side that remains without Reece Walsh. Jesse Arthars has the No.1 on his back with Selwyn Cobbo on the wing. The Broncos have named Origin stars Payne Haas and Patrick Carrigan in the front row, with big man Ben Te Kura included on the bench. Teams with a number of Origin representatives have been granted an extra player or two on the bench, yet it's the Wests Tigers who have the biggest headline of round 13 with Lachlan Galvin not named in their side for the trip to Townsville. Galvin is reportedly set to join the Bulldogs this week and has likely played his last game for the Tigers, with Heath Mason to partner Jarome Luai in the halves as Latu Fainu recovers from injury. Fletcher Sharpe moves back to five-eighth with Kalyn Ponga set to start for the Knights just two days after Origin, while the Dragons get try-scoring machine Christian Tuipulotu back from a hamstring injury. The Storm have named their Origin stars and could welcome back Jack Howarth from a shoulder injury after he was named in the reserves for the trip to the Gold Coast who lost Josiah Pahulu to Melbourne on Monday. Panthers coach Ivan Cleary has made a big change by dropping grand final hero Paul Alamoti for the derby against Parramatta, with the bottom-placed premiers naming all of their Origin players to back up. The Eels, Cowboys and Roosters should also have all of their rep stars on deck if they get through Origin unscathed, while the Raiders have named Owen Pattie to start in place of the suspended Tom Starling.
