Jazz Chisholm Jr. returns, hits key HR as Yankees top Guardians

June 4 - Jazz Chisholm Jr. snapped a tie by homering on the first pitch of the seventh inning to help Carlos Rodon get his seventh straight victory as the New York Yankees returned from their longest road trip of the season and hung on to beat the Cleveland Guardians 3-2 on Tuesday night. Activated from the injured list Tuesday after missing 28 games with an oblique injury, Chisholm had New York's first hit off Cleveland's Tanner Bibee (4-6) in the fifth before snapping a 1-1 tie in the seventh. Chisholm gave the Yankees the lead when he lifted a fastball into the right field seats for his eighth homer this season and first since April 21 in Cleveland. After Chisholm's 358-foot shot, Volpe gave the Yankees a two-run lead when he lifted a 3-1 sweeper 372 feet into the left field seats. It was Volpe's first home run since May 12 in Seattle. Chisholm and Volpe helped the Yankees win their fifth straight game at home following a 6-3 road trip against the Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers. Rodon (8-3) took a shutout into the seventh before allowing Jose Ramirez to single, steal second and score on a base hit by David Fry. Rodon stranded Fry at third and was aided by center fielder Trent Grisham throwing Gabriel Arias out at second trying to stretch a single. Rodon allowed one run on five hits in seven innings. The left-hander struck out eight, walked one and is 7-0 with a 1.27 ERA in his past nine starts. Rodon retired 17 straight before losing the lead in the seventh. He kept the game tied by retiring Bo Naylor on a fly ball with two on. DJ LeMahieu had an RBI single in the fifth after Chisholm got New York's first hit on a bloop single to left. Aaron Judge was 0-for-2 with two walks, lowering his average to .387. Mark Leiter Jr. retired Ramirez with a runner on to end the eighth. Devin Williams allowed an RBI single to pinch hitter Daniel Schneeman before getting Naylor to fly out to secure his sixth save. Bibee allowed three runs on four hits in 6 1/3 innings. The right-hander struck out six, walked two and dropped to 1-4 in his past five outings. Ramirez had two hits to extend his on-base streak to 29 games. --Field Level Media

Yankees rally after beatdown, top Dodgers 7-3 to avoid sweep in World Series rematch

They didn't quite return the favor after Saturday's beatdown at Dodger Stadium, but the New York Yankees are leaving Los Angeles with a win after all. The Yankees, after a wild 18-2 blowout loss on Saturday, rolled to a solid 7-3 win over the reigning World Series champions on Sunday afternoon. That gave them their first win of the three-game series and successfully avoided the sweep. The Yankees are one of just three teams in the league, along with the New York Mets and Cincinnati Reds, who have yet to be swept this season. Advertisement The Yankees jumped out in front right away on Sunday afternoon after Trent Grisham scored on an error following a Jasson Dominguez single. While Tommy Edman hit a solo home run in the second for the Dodgers to tie it up, the Yankees responded in the very next inning. Ben Rice hit a deep two-run shot to center, which suddenly put them up 3-1. Anthony Volpe scored on a wild pitch from Yoshinobu Yamamoto that inning, too. Yamamoto lasted just 3.2 innings on the mound for the Dodgers in what was his shortest start of the season. He gave up seven hits and four earned runs. The Yankees added two more runs in the fifth after both DJ LeMahieu and Oswald Peraza each hit RBI singles. That gave them a 6-1 lead at the time, which just about put the Dodgers away. Though both Andy Pages and Max Muncy hit solo shots for the Dodgers in the seventh, the comeback attempt started too late. The Yankees made it out of that inning, and then quickly fought through the final two to escape with the four-run win. LeMahieu hit a deep RBI double in the final inning to add one last run for good measure. He went 4-for-5 on the night in what was his first four-hit game since 2021. Advertisement The Dodgers won the opening game of the series 8-5 on Friday, thanks to a pair of home runs from star Shohei Ohtani. Then came Saturday's stunner, which was powered by seven RBIs from Muncy. Their 18 runs was the most that the Dodgers have ever put up against the Yankees in history, too. Things got so bad at one point that Ohtani even hilariously lost interest. The Dodgers, even with Sunday's loss, sit at 36-23 on the season. They lead the NL West, and have won four of their last six games. They'll open a four-game series with the Mets on Monday night. Though the Yankees are still in a great position in the AL at this point of the season — they hold a 36-22 record and are leading the AL East — it's clear that the Dodgers are still one step ahead of them after this past weekend's series in Southern California.

Phillies Trade Idea Dumps 'Expendable' All-Star for Centerfield Upgrade From Yankees

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Philadelphia Phillies are leading the National League East, but may need to make some upgrades if they want to hold off the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves all season. The Phillies have a need in the outfield. Their .618 OPS from centerfield is the eighth-worst in baseball. Their numbers from right field are not much better, but the team ideally needs to add a centerfielder. Johan Rojas and Brandon Marsh have shared centerfield this season. The Phillies' best trade asset is likely third baseman Alec Bohm, who was an All-Star last season. Bohm was at the center of plenty of trade rumors in the offseason, but ultimately was not moved. Heavy's Sam Bernardi suggested the Phillies cut ties with him in order to acquire Trent Grisham in a package from the Yankees. PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - APRIL 5: Trent Grisham #12 of the New York Yankees celebrates with teammates in the dugout after hitting a solo home run in the third inning during the game against the Pittsburgh... PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - APRIL 5: Trent Grisham #12 of the New York Yankees celebrates with teammates in the dugout after hitting a solo home run in the third inning during the game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park on April 5, 2025 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. More"As a pending free agent, Bohm is far more expendable," wrote Bernardi. "While the Phillies are also thinking about October, they could use another outfielder, and perhaps a Trent Grisham-centered deal would entice them." Grisham will be a free agent after the season, and the Yankees may be open to trading him to fill their gaping hole at third base. Moving on from Grisham would allow the Yankees to make Jasson Domínguez an everyday player. Bohm would be a massive upgrade for the team at third base. The Yankees have gotten a .188/.267/.267 slash line from third base this year. That is the second-worst in baseball. Bohm is slashing .272/.308/.385 this year with four home runs. Bohm is under club control through next season, and the Phillies could trade him now while his value is high. The Phillies could use utilityman Edmundo Sosa at third base if they trade Bohm. Although it's a small sample size, Sosa is hitting .354 with an .871 OPS. Meanwhile, Grisham has a .880 OPS with 12 home runs this season. He also has two Gold Gloves and would solve the Phillies' problems in centerfield. More MLB: Phillies' Star Leaves Game With Apparent Injury After Dangerous Hit By Pitch

Yankees' offense erupts for 10 runs in fifth inning en route to 13-1 win over Rockies

The Yankees' offense erupted for 13 runs and a season-high 21 hits, thanks to a 10-run fifth inning, in their 13-1 rout of the Rockies in Colorado on Saturday afternoon. Saturday's game was the second time this season the Yankees have had a 10-plus run inning (May 6). It's the first time that's happened multiple times in one season since 2009. Here are the takeaways... -After homering in his first game at Coors Field, Aaron Judge gave the Denver crowd an encore with a solo shot in the first inning on Saturday. Judge went the other way 405 feet off of Kyle Freeland for his 18th homer of the season. Advertisement Aside from the Judge blast, the Yankees' offense just couldn't get much going. Leaving runners on base and grounding into double plays. But that changed in the fifth. Austin Wells hit a leadoff single, which was followed by Oswald Peraza's double that scored the Yankees catcher. Trent Grisham then hit a chopper at the plate and Freeland made a poor throw that got by the first baseman, which allowed Peraza to score. Cody Bellinger drove in the third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly after Judge was intentionally walked to load the bases. Anthony Volpe singled up the middle that hit second base and bounced off the second baseman's glove. Jasson Dominguez hit a sacrifice fly that scored Judge, Wells doubled to score two, Paul Goldschmidt hit an RBI single and Grisham capped off the 10-run inning with a two-run double. After 10 runs on seven hits, three walks, and one error, the inning mercifully ended on a Judge strikeout swinging. The Yanks sent up 14 batters in the fifth. -After scoring just two runs on five hits in Friday's loss, the Yankees' offense came to play. Every starter had at least one hit, with Goldschmidt, Bellinger, Volpe and DJ LeMahieu picking up three knocks on the day. Even J.C. Escarra and Pablo Reyes picked up hits in mop-up duty. Bellinger got the series opener off after his 15-game hitting streak was snapped on Thursday. Back in the lineup, the veteran outfielder hit a double in his first at-bat and finished going 2-for-4. Judge went 1-for-4 with a walk and a strikeout and his batting average has dipped to .395 on the year. Advertisement -The run support was more than enough for Max Fried. The southpaw got through the Rockies' lineup with relative ease, scattering six hits and a walk while allowing just one run. Fried was very economical, throwing just 77 pitches entering the eighth inning. After a strikeout on six pitches to start the inning, manager Aaron Boone pulled his ace. Fried allowed just one run on six hits, one walk across 7.1 innings (83 pitches/57 strikes) while striking out seven batters. An impressive line considering he was pitching at Coors Field and the number of long innings he had to sit on the bench for. He's lowered his MLB-low ERA to 1.29. He also picked off two runners at first base, increasing his AL lead to six pickoffs this season. -Ian Hamilton, who allowed eight runs over his last six appearances, was brought in to finish off the game. The right-hander allowed two hits and struck out three batters over the 1.2 innings pitched. Game MVP: Max Fried The entire Yankees offense could have been the MVP, but Fried not only mowed down the Rockies and got the team their first win in the series, he gave the bullpen a breather. Highlights What's next The Yankees finish off their three-game set at Coors Field on Sunday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 3:10 p.m. RHP Will Warren (3-2, 4.05 ERA) gets the start for New York and will be opposed by the Rockies' RHP Antonio Senzatela (1-8, 6.34 ERA).

(AP Photo/Frank Franklin II) DENVER (AP) — The New York Yankees broke open a tight game with a 10-run fifth inning Saturday against the Colorado Rockies. Aaron Judge wasn't even at the heart of it as the Rockies intentionally walked the slugger and later struck him out. Advertisement It matched the biggest frame of the season for the Yankees, who also scored 10 times in the seventh inning against San Diego on May 6. The top of the fifth started with the game tied at 1-apiece. It ended with the Yankees sending 14 batters to the plate, collecting seven hits, drawing three walks, producing two sacrifice flies and reaching on starter Kyle Freeland's throwing error. Things were a lot more comfortable for starter Max Fried with the scored 11-1. The big blows were a pair of two-run doubles from Austin Wells and Trent Grisham. Oswald Peraza also added an RBI double, while Paul Goldschmidt and Anthony Volpe had run-scoring singles. Cody Bellinger and Jasson Domínguez brought in runs with deep fly outs. Colorado used two pitchers in the inning — Freeland and reliever Angel Chivilli. New York's electric inning ended on a strikeout by Judge, who earlier in the game hit his 18th homer of the season. ___ More AP baseball:
