Story went 2 for 3 and just missed a grand slam in the first when he hit a 1-0 pitch from Bryce Elder 413 feet off the top of the wall in center, driving in Boston's only runs. Story had a big series in Atlanta, hitting a go-ahead two-run homer in a 5-1 Red Sox win Friday. Crochet (5-4) has pitched at least five innings in all 13 of his starts this season with eight quality outings. The 25-year-old left-hander has a streak of 13 outings with at least five innings pitched. That surpasses his career-best run of 12 straight from April 29, 2024 to June 30, 2024. Crochet is tied with Washington's MacKenzie Gore for the major league lead with 101 strikeouts this season. Aroldis Chapman earned his ninth save for the Braves. Marcell Ozuna accounted for Atlanta's only run with a solo homer, his 10th of the season, in the bottom of the first. Elder (2-3) allowed six hits and three earned runs, with four strikeouts and three walks in 5 1/3 innings. Key moment The Braves threatened in the bottom of the fourth when Matt Olson hit a leadoff double and moved to third on Ozzie Albies' single with no outs. Crochet then retired the next three batters in order, shutting down the threat. Key stat Crochet became the first pitcher to have 12 or more strikeouts in a game against Atlanta since Philadelphia's Zack Wheeler struck out 12 on May 7, 2023. Up next The Braves are off on Monday and are scheduled to throw RHP Spencer Strider (0-3, 4.50 ERA) against Arizona RHP Zac Gallen (3-7, 5.54) in their series opener on Tuesday. Red Sox take down Braves to end 5-game skid
May 31 - Trevor Story ended a 15-game homer-less streak and the visiting Boston Red Sox beat the Atlanta Braves 5-1 on Friday in the opener of their three-game series to stop their season-long five-game skid. Story hit a two-run homer, his seventh, in the fourth inning to give Boston the lead. The shot carried 431 feet to left field and was his first home run since May 10. Boston starter Lucas Giolito pitched 4 2/3 innings and allowed one run on five hits, two walks and three strikeouts. He recorded only one perfect inning and escaped trouble in the fourth inning when he allowed the first two runners to reach before retiring the next three, striking out Ronald Acuna Jr. to end the threat. The winning pitcher was Garrett Whitlock (4-0), the second of five relievers used by the Red Sox. He pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Atlanta starter Grant Holmes (3-4) pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on six hits, one walk and matched his career high with nine strikeouts. The Braves scored one run in the first inning when Matt Olson singled to right field to score Acuna. The throw from Wilyer Abreu beat Acuna to the plate but took an odd hop and bounced off the mask of catcher Carlos Narvaez. After Story's homer in the fourth, Boston added a run in the sixth inning. Narvaez doubled and scored on Abraham Toro's double that bounced off the base of the right-field wall. Toro, who had three hits, has hit safely in 10 of his last 12 games. The Braves appeared to have scored in the seventh when Story made a great play at shortstop but threw wildly to first base, allowing a run to score. But the call was overturned when a video challenge showed Toro had kept a toe on first base, which ended the inning. By RICK FARLOW Associated Press Trevor Story hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the fourth inning and the Boston Red Sox snapped a five-game skid with a 5-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Friday night. Atlanta jumped out to a lead in the first on Matt Olson's RBI single. Story and Boston took the lead in the fourth, added a run in the sixth and two more in the ninth on a two-run single by Rafael Devers to send the Braves to their fourth loss in five games. Red Sox starter Lucas Giolito allowed one earned run on five hits with three strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings. Five Boston relievers combined to work 4 1/3 shutout innings with four strikeouts and just one hit. Key moment Down 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, the Braves got the potential tying run to first base with two outs. Olson hit a grounder 112.7 mph to Story at shortstop. Story made a diving stop and his throw to first appeared to pull first baseman Abraham Toro off the bag. Toro then threw home, attempting to throw out Luke Williams. But, Toro's throw was errant, allowing Williams to reach home. The Red Sox challenged the call at first base, and the call was overturned. Olson was called out to end the inning and the score remained 3-1. Key stat Story entered the game batting .131 (16 for 122) with six RBIs in his last 30 games. He ended a 57 at-bat homerless streak with his fourth inning blast. Up next The Red Sox send RHP Walker Buehler (4-2, 3.95 ERA) against the Braves' RHP Spencer Schwellenbach (3-4, 3.42) in the second game of the series on Saturday.
