Hardywood, Beet Box and more will open at the Richmond airport this year
By the end of the year, folks flying out of Richmond airport should have four new places to eat or grab a drink. Why it matters: Hardywood Park Craft Brewery and The Beet Box juice bar, two local brands, will be some of the new options. The big picture: The Capital Region Airport Commission, the group that owns and operates Richmond International Airport, last week signed off on two new full-service restaurants and bars, plus two new coffee and cafe kiosks, for the airport. The newcomers were selected from the commission's request for new concession proposals last year, according to BizSense, which first reported the news. Three will land in Concourse A (the one on the right / if you're flying American or JetBlue), while Concourse B (if you're flying Delta, Southwest or United) will get the fourth. Faber, Coe & Gregg, a New Jersey-based airport concession vendor, will operate the restaurants and Richmond's own Beet Box will run the two kiosks. Zoom in: The Hardywood Park Craft Brewery (airport edition!) will go near gates A-15 and A-16 (in place of open seating) and include a full-service restaurant and bar, plus grab-and-go options, per the resolution adopted at last week's meeting. The Beet Box's two concepts (one called The Beet Box and the other Homegrown) will go near gates A-8 and A-11. Concourse B travelers won't be left behind though. A Wolfgang Puck Bar & Bites will taxi in near gates B-14 and B-15. All four should be open by the end of the year, airport spokesperson Troy Bell tells Axios.

Virginians might face TSA delays without Real ID or passport
Roughly 40% of Virginians didn't have a valid passport as of fiscal year 2024, per estimates from the Center for American Progress, a think tank. Why it matters: Starting Wednesday, a passport will be the only alternative for a Real ID when flying domestically — though people without either will still be allowed to fly. Catch up quick: Congress passed the Real ID Act back in 2005, but the federal deadline for actually requiring compliant ID cards has been repeatedly delayed until now. And more than 40% of Virginians with an active license or ID haven't gotten one yet. Threat level: If you're planning to fly soon without a Real ID or U.S. passport, Richmond airport spokesperson Troy Bell tells us you should "allow extra time for TSA security screening." TSA spokesperson Daniel Velez told Axios passengers without an acceptable form of ID should arrive "up to an hour earlier than their normal time." Velez said TSA might "direct them into another area." The agency might also ask for additional information to confirm your identity, like name and current address. Fun fact: While our Real ID compliant rate is lower than D.C. and Maryland, Virginia has the highest percentage of citizens with passports in the South and most of the U.S.

There's now an A-10 basketball court replica inside Richmond airport
Henrico Sports & Entertainment Authority erected a replica of the Atlantic 10 Championship basketball court inside the Richmond airport over the weekend. Why it matters: The "terminal takeover" is in celebration of the A10 Women's Basketball Championship, which will play out at the Henrico Sports & Events Center on March 5-9. The big picture: The court, which is regulation width and nearly half the length of a regular court, took six hours to install on Saturday, according to a news release from the Richmond airport. It sits on the upper level at RIC, just above baggage claim, and will be there for at least two weeks, airport spokesperson Troy Bell tells Axios. The public can walk and roll their luggage across the court, but sadly it's for "display only and is not meant for competitive play," per the release. There also aren't any basketballs available if travelers wanted to play a quick game of H-O-R-S-E. Yes, but: Should one happen to have a ball on their person, they might be able to get in a free throw or two. The bottom line: If you're heading to the airport in the next few weeks, you should absolutely not slip a basketball into your carry-on. We'd never recommend someone break airport rules.

Scoop: Richmond airport to add smart parking sensors to garages
Richmond International Airport is planning to put automatic sensors in its garages that will tell drivers whether a parking spot is open, Axios has learned. Why it matters: Other airports tell you to arrive early because of TSA lines. In Richmond, you do it because you have to circle the garages for 45 minutes trying to find which of the 7,000 parking spots are available. Driving the news: The plan is in the extremely early phases, which means details are TBD. But RIC spokesperson Troy Bell tells Axios that airport commissioners expect to issue a call for bids by this summer. The sensor system would have the same company designing and building it, Bell said. How it works: The type of sensors used by other airports varies, but they usually change colors to show what's available (green) or taken (red). Some systems use blue for ADA spots. The most common are the ceiling-mounted ultrasonic ones. Others, like at Seattle's airport, use cameras to track spaces. Yes, but: Don't get too excited. Installs in Richmond could take more than two years. Fingers crossed it'll be done by the time the airport finishes consolidating its two TSA screening areas in early 2028. In the meantime, enjoy being able to pay for parking with your E-ZPass.
