Troy Parrott a doubt for Ireland's friendly with Senegal
Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson is confident that Troy Parrott can shake off a bug and be available for selection for Friday night's friendly international against Senegal at the Aviva Stadium (7.45pm). Parrott was confined to his room in the Castleknock hotel earlier in the week with a bug, but Hallgrímsson expects the 23-year-old to train on Thursday. 'Troy was sick yesterday and he stayed in his room but he was feeling much better this morning,' said Hallgrímsson. 'He is the only concern we have. Otherwise everybody is fit, ready and looking forward to Senegal. 'Troy will train today and we will see how he reacts to the session before selecting the team.' READ MORE If Parrott does not recover, Evan Ferguson or Adam Idah will lead the line against the 19th ranked country in the world. Ireland are currently placed 60th on the Fifa list. Brentford's new signing Caoimhín Kelleher is expected to start in goal behind Matt Doherty, Nathan Collins, Dara O'Shea and Robbie Brady, who was named the FAI men's international player of the season. 'It shows how s**t youse have all been if I'm winning this,' Brady jokingly told his team-mates after assistant coach John O'Shea presented him with the award on Wednesday. Everton's Jake O'Brien and Celtic's Liam Scales are alternative options in defence against Senegal and when Ireland travel to Luxembourg next Tuesday. Will Smallbone is expected to return to the line-up, as an attacking midfielder, potentially ahead of Jason Knight and Jack Taylor with the Spanish-born, Cameroonian qualified John Joe Patrick Finn in line to make his debut for Ireland. 'It is important that we have more than 11 players ready to play and knowing everything about how we want to play,' said Hallgrímsson. 'We wanted to have a camp in May to add knowledge to more players, see new faces and rock the boat. 'We've been more or less picking a similar squad so when we lost out on the May camp we still opened spots for new players to come in.'

Double header is perfect opportunity for Ireland trio of Parrott, Idah and Ferguson to hit the target
There is a good reason why Troy Parrott , Adam Idah and Evan Ferguson are the only strikers named in Heimir Hallgrímsson's Republic of Ireland squad for the upcoming double header of international friendlies. The Boys In Green play Senegal at the Aviva Stadium on Friday before catching a plane for a clash with Luxembourg next Tuesday. To date, all three players have five international goals to their credit. And while Parrott (23) and Idah (24) are coming off the back of impressive seasons, much is expected of 20-year-old Ferguson despite a disappointing campaign in the Premier League. What separates Ireland's established front men from the rest is their proven ability in front of goal. Idah just completed the best season of his career, hitting 20 for Celtic despite starting the campaign behind Kyogo Furuhashi. Three of his goals came in the Champions League and he also scored Ireland's winning goal against Bulgaria in March. READ MORE Parrott's career is also on an upward trajectory, with the Dubliner finishing on 20 goals for AZ Alkmaar, 14 of which came in the Dutch Eredivisie to leave him as the division's third highest scorer. Parrott also grabbed four goals in European competition, including a snap shot that gave Robbie Keane a nervous first night in charge of Hungarian side Ferencvaros in the Uefa Europa League. Troy Parrott had a successful season with AZ, scoring 14 Eredivisie goals and 20 in all competitions. Photograph: Alex Bierens'You learn a lot more about yourself [at a European club],' said Keane in January, drawing on his experiences with Inter Milan as a young player. 'When I went to Italy at 19, 20 years of age, even in that short space of time I learned a lot in terms of how to play. 'Look at Troy now, he is still young, still learning his trade. As a young player you have to go on these journeys. Take a few loans, take a few hits and then go to a club where you feel valued and are the main guy.' Ferguson has taken 'a few hits' since notching his first Premier League goal for Brighton, against Arsenal, in December, 2022. There is no way to dress up the loan move to West Ham in January after he struggled for minutes at Brighton under Fabian Hürzeler. The presence of Graham Potter, his first manager at Brighton, offered promise of a career revival in London. However, he was unceremoniously hooked at half-time in his only Premier League start for the Hammers against Wolves. Ideally, Ferguson returns to Brighton for pre-season without the knee or ankle issues that silenced talk of him becoming a £100 million teenager. Apparently, Manchester United were at the front of the queue. Despite his stalled progress in England, Ferguson continued to deliver for Ireland, scoring the goal that beat Finland 1-0 in Dublin last November before a fine individual effort against Bulgaria. Evan Ferguson scores for Ireland against Finland last November. Photograph: Morgan Treacy/Inpho 'Evan is fit,' said Hallgrímsson. 'He has a chance to prove a point. It is good to see, for us. 'We can see his quality in our sessions, especially his finishing. It is second to none. We all know that once he starts playing on a regular basis, he will deliver more for us.' With an eye towards bolstering Ireland's attack in the upcoming World Cup qualification campaign, Hallgrímsson and his assistant John O'Shea recently met Premier League forward Liam Delap. The Ireland manager's summation of the discussion with a 22-year-old who has played for England at every age grade? 'Well, he didn't say f**k off.' Delap has a busy summer ahead as his £30 million (€36 million) move from Ipswich Town to Chelsea is set to rule him out of the England under-21s' defence of their European Championship title. The powerful forward, who scored 12 Premier League goals for Ipswich last season, could make his debut for Chelsea against Los Angeles FC in the Fifa Club World Cup on June 16th. Sammie Szmodics is the safer bet to break up the Idah-Parrott-Ferguson triumvirate despite an injury disrupted first season in the Premier League. The 29-year-old managed seven goals for Ipswich until his ankle injury in January, following up an outstanding 33-goal haul for Blackburn Rovers in the 2023/24 season. Hallgrímsson tends to play Szmodics off the left, but come the daunting away qualifiers against Portugal and Hungary later this year, a hard-working 'false nine' may be required. Callum Robinson and Tom Cannon are another pair of English-born Irish strikers who both scored 12 goals this season in the Championship, for Cardiff and Sheffield United respectively. Michael Obafemi struggled with just two goals for a Burnley side that stormed back into the Premier League.

Parrott price tag: AZ aim high amidst Premier League interest
AZ are hopeful of breaking the outgoing transfer record this summer. According to De Telegraaf (via VoetbalPrimeur) the Alkmaarders want a large sum for Troy Parrott, who is enjoying interest from newly promoted Premier League club Leeds United. Due to the development of Mexx Meerdink, who scored a hat-trick against sc Heerenveen on Thursday, it isn't ridiculous to suggest that AZ will cooperate in Parrott's departure. The 23-year-old Irishman came over from Tottenham Hotspur last summer for four million euros, but is expected to bring a much larger profit. Advertisement Freshly promoted Leeds United have reportedly been told that Parrott is worth no less than thirty million euros, according to De Telegraaf. While Leeds believe that price is too high for their liking, Parrott has still scored 20 goals and provided five assists in 46 official matches this season, meriting a gamble of such proportions. In the meantime, AZ coach Maarten Martens did not want to say who would be in the starting line-up for Sunday's play-off final against FC Twente. It seems that the Irish international's recovery from injury and Meerdink's recent purple patch gives the Belgian manager a selection dilemma. Currently, the outgoing transfer record at AZ is held by Alireza Jahanbakhsh, who left for Brighton in 2018 for 22.5 million euros. Vincent Janssen follows in second place with his transfer to Tottenham worth 22 million, while Tijjani Reijnders brought in 20.5 million with his transfer to AC Milan. GBeNeFN | Max Bradfield

AZ Alkmaar place huge price on Troy Parrott as Premier League interest grows
Troy Parrott could be set for a return to the Premier League this summer, but AZ Alkmaar hope to hold onto him by slapping a big price tag on his head. The Dubliner has scored 20 goals this season for the Eredivisie side, including four in their run to the Europa League last-16, where they exited to his former side Tottenham in March. That form has caught the eye of clubs in England and beyond, and Leeds United have reportedly targeted him as someone who can help them build on this year's promotion back to the Premier League. Alkmaar don't want to lose the man they signed last summer for €8m from Spurs, however, so they hope to ward off interest by more than trebling his value. They are making it known that bids of less than €25m for the 23-year-old will not be entertained. Leeds boss Daniel Farke will be given significant financial backing this summer in his bid to turn his squad into one strong enough to avoid an immediate return to the Championship - and Parrott is one of the names on his list. He is in the form of his life, having played two seasons in the Dutch top-flight; the first while on-loan at Excelsior from Spurs. The 28-time capped youngster opened his account in his fifth game with AZ, scoring four goals in a 9-1 win against Heerenveen. Big goals followed against Ajax, and Roma and Galatasaray in Europe. He has yet to flourish in England, having made just two Premier League appearances for Tottenham. And during loan spells at Millwall, Ipswich, MK Dons and Preston, he scored just 16 goals in 113 games. However, Farke is a fan of the Dublin-born striker, having tracked his impact this season both domestically and in European competition. Troy Parrott on target in Dutch Cup final but AZ Alkmaar suffer agonising loss
Troy Parrott slotted his 20th goal of the season from a re-taken penalty but AZ Alkmaar suffered disappointment against Go Ahead Eagles in a dramatic Dutch Cup final in Rotterdam. The Dubliner had given Alkmaar the lead from the penalty spot on the 54th minute - albeit only after a stroke of fortune. His initial penalty effort was saved but was offered a second chance after a VAR review determined that Eagles defender Mathis Suray had encroached in the penalty area too early before clearing the rebound. Parrott made no mistake on the second attempt, sending the keeper the wrong way. He was forced off with injury shortly afterwards but his strike appeared to have settled the contest until deep in injury time, when the Eagles were awarded a 99th minute penalty, converted by captain Mats Deijl. After a goalless extra-time period, there was agony for Alkmaar in the shootout as misses from Zico Burmeester and Mayckel Lahdo saw the Eagles claim their first ever Cup victory.
