'Underappreciated' Orlando Pirates player wanted in North Africa
Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa is a wanted man in North Africa, it appears. The 28-year-old is just six goals shy of breaking the club's all-time goalscorer but could miss out if he decides to leave. He hasn't had much game time under the new head coach, Abdeslam Ouaddou, with Boitumelo Radiopane preferred as the main striker. Mabasa's agent Gary Cassisa has revealed that Moroccan outfit Mas Fez are interested in the Bafana Bafana forward. 'Yes, there has been interest from Mas Fez, but Tshegofatso Mabasa remains committed to Orlando Pirates only,' Cassisa told Soccer Laduma. 'He is closing in on the club's all-time leading goalscorer record and would like to make history with the Soweto giants.' Last season, Mabasa scored seven goals in 25 league matches for the Buccaneers. The season before, the 28-year-old attacker netted 16 goals to win the PSL golden boot for the first time. Despite being Pirates' top goalscorer for the last two seasons, Mabasa has not made the matchday squad for any of the club's games so far this season. After leaving him out of the league opener against Sekhukhune United, head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou explained that he was left out due to a selection decision. In his place, 22-year-old Boitumelo Radiopane was selected to start, with 23-year-old Yanela Mbuthuma playing off the bench. The absence of Mabasa has led to struggles for Pirates. Photo: BackpagePix Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has revealed the reason why Tshegofatso Mabasa was absent from their Betway Premiership opener against Sekhukhune United. Without their top goalscorer for the last two seasons, Pirates struggled in the game played at Orlando Stadium on Saturday evening. Despite creating more goalscoring opportunities and dominating for large portions, they were ultimately beaten 1-0. Immediately after the game, there was talk about Mabasa's omission. It was the second game in a row that the 28-year-old had been left out of the squad completely. Speaking after the game, Ouaddou said that Mabasa was available, but they made a choice to start with 22-year-old Boitumelo Radiopane, with 23-year-old Yanela Mbuthuma playing off the bench.
