Raja of Perlis: Passion for knowledge a foundation of human development
KANGAR: A culture of passion for knowledge is the foundation of human self-development, and all Malaysians, especially the people of Perlis, are urged to constantly seek knowledge to improve themselves in various aspects. Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail said passion for knowledge begins with the act of reading. "In line with this, I call on each of us, especially the people of Perlis, to continue to cultivate the habit of reading in our daily lives so that we may become knowledgeable individuals. "A society that reads and cherishes knowledge will produce individuals who are educated, possess noble character, are faithful to their religion, and are highly skilled," he said. Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin decreed this when opening the Tuanku Tengku Fauziah Repository Centre at the Kuala Perlis Public Library branch here. Also in attendance at the ceremony were the Raja Perempuan of Perlis, Tuanku Tengku Fauziah Tengku Rashid. Present were National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang and Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli. Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin said the development of the repository centre was highly appropriate to ensure the preservation of the nation's intellectual heritage in a secure and pristine condition for the reference of both current and future generations. "This initiative will benefit not only the people of Perlis but also residents of other northern states in continuing to seek knowledge through reading. "I have also been informed that the National Unity Ministry, through the National Library of Malaysia. conducted the Malaysian Reading Profile Survey for the year 2022/2023. "The survey showed an increase in the average number of reading materials read per year to 24 books, compared to only 15 in 2014. Congratulations are due on this achievement. "I believe that the National Library has designed various programmes based on the findings of this study to strengthen reading habits among Malaysians and to ensure that the culture of loving knowledge continues to flourish among the people." "I would like to remind everyone that the first commandment revealed by Allah SWT to our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW was 'Iqra', which means 'read'. Let reading become an integral part of our daily lives," he added. Earlier, the royal couple spent time touring the centre, developed by the National Library. The repository centre spans nearly 632 sq m and was built at a cost of over RM2.5 million. It was completed on April 15 last year. The centre will function as a strategic hub for the storage and management of national-level library materials in the northern zone, covering the states of Perlis, Kedah, Penang and northern Perak. Through access to materials under the Deposit of Library Materials Act 1986, local and regional communities will benefit from a rich and diverse reference collection that can be used for learning, research, and the advancement of knowledge.

Sultan Nazrin opens new NRD office in Taiping
TAIPING: Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, officially opened the National Registration Department (NRD) of the Larut Matang and Selama District here today. The ceremony was also attended by the Raja Permaisuri of Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim; the Raja Muda of Perak, Raja Jaafar Raja Muda Musa; and the Raja Di Hilir of Perak, Raja Iskandar Dzurkarnain Sultan Idris Shah. Also present were Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Annuar Nasarah, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, and Home Ministry Deputy Secretary-General (Policy and Control) Datuk Makhzan Mahyuddin. As a symbol of the official opening, Sultan Nazrin signed a plaque and later visited the office and exhibition. In his speech, Shamsul said the ministry, through the NRD, is responsible for ensuring that policies, laws, and regulations related to national registration are consistently implemented to meet public needs and expectations, while safeguarding national interests. "The registration of births and deaths, marriages, and citizenship are crucial records, especially in supporting the formulation and implementation of key national policies. "Taking these factors into account, the NRD is fully committed to delivering the best possible services to the public. "The delivery of quality, efficient, accurate, and people-friendly services in the interest of the nation is the NRD's quality policy, in line with the government's inclusive approach," he said. He noted that the RM10.5 million NRD office is one of 20 operating in Perak and the construction began on Sept 2, 2021, and was completed on April 22, 2024. "This office is a merger of the original offices that operated in the Wisma Persekutuan Taiping building since 1986 and the NRD branch in Kamunting, which had been operating since 2004 in the Kamunting sub-district. "Both offices underwent a rationalisation process and were combined into the current office. "Continuous improvement efforts have been made to ensure the quality of services provided aligns with the increasing population in this district," he added. He said the new office, built on a 4.05ha site, features attractive architecture and a corporate image, providing better facilities and infrastructure for the public. According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia's 2024 report, the population in the district increased by 14 per cent, reaching 313,400 compared to 269,600 in 2020. "The location is strategic, being close to the North-South Expressway and the West Coast Expressway, with geographical advantages, a spacious land area, and a more conducive office environment. "In 2024, the Larut Matang and Selama District NRD received 69,740 applications, compared to 41,804 in the previous year. "This 40 per cent increase demonstrates that the NRD's initiative to improve facilities for public comfort is a timely and appropriate step in delivering efficient and effective services," he said. He added that as the leading agency in managing the nation's population records, the NRD plays a crucial role as the primary reference agency for identity record management through digital transformation. "The NRD has implemented digitalisation initiatives such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and MyDigital ID, modernising services that originally began with manual registration of personal documents into a digital system that streamlines customer interactions and shortens processing times," he said.

KANGAR, May 20 (Bernama) -- The 'choley' service, a decorated three-wheeled motor vehicle operating in Kampung Warna Warni, Kuala Perlis near here, will be expanded to areas around the Kuala Perlis Ferry Terminal in an effort to strengthen Perlis' tourism identity. 'If Melaka is known for its trishaws, we want to highlight choley for Perlis. We will increase the number of units from the current 30 in Kampung Warna Warni to 100 in strategic areas such as the Kuala Perlis Ferry Terminal,' he told reporters after observing the initial implementation of the choley service at the terminal today.

Body of 10-year-old Rohingya girl who fell into drain found in river
KUALA LUMPUR: The body of a 10-year-old girl was found about six kilometres from where she was swept away by strong currents after falling into a drain yesterday evening. The victim, believed to be of Rohingya descent, was reported missing after she fell into a drain in front of the MPAJ Hall in Kampung Cheras Baru at about 6.07pm. Ampang Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail said the search and rescue (SAR) team, which resumed operations this morning, found the girl's body in Sungai Kerayong, Taman Cheras Indah. "The body was discovered about six kilometres from where the victim was last seen," he said in a statement. The body has been sent to the Forensic Unit of Canselor Tuanku Muhriz UKM Hospital for a post-mortem examination. It is understood that during the incident, two Rohingya children fell into the large drain and were swept away by strong currents. One of the children was rescued by members of the public, while the other was carried away before help could arrive. Meanwhile, the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department said in a statement that personnel from the Cheras and Bandar Tun Razak stations, including the Water Rescue Unit, rushed to the scene following a distress call at 4.23pm. "Upon combing the area, they were unable to locate the victim. Around 7pm, the SAR was temporarily halted due to heavy rain and resumed at 9pm. "However, after assessing the risks involved, we called off the search at almost 10pm," it said. This morning, the SAR, led by operations commander Mohd Riduan Akhyar, resumed at 10am at the Jalan Kuari drain but yielded no results. The team then combed another area at 11.20am, leading to the river near Taman Maju Jaya, Cheras Indah, where they found the victim. The child's remains were handed over to the police.
