A studio in a Beatles-inspired NYC co-op asks $425K
By the time Dr. Scott Keller walked through the whimsical lobby of 215 E. 24th St. in 2007, he already knew he was home. The longtime chiropractor and part-time musician had spent two years searching for an apartment. But the moment he stepped into the foyer — with its faux street lamps, Tudor timbers and a wrought-iron patio set evoking a Liverpool, England lane — he felt a rush of déjà vu. 9 A quirky studio has listed for $425,000 in one of Manhattan's most unusual co-ops: the Penny Lane, a former ice cream factory turned 1970s co-op known for its Beatles-inspired lobby. Marcio Honorato Photography 9 A photo of Penny Lane in Liverpool, made famous by a Beatles song. dpa/picture alliance via Getty Images 'I knew that this place was for me. I knew it was mine, and I knew I'd been there before,' Keller, 59, told The Post. 'There are no mistakes in the universe. Everything has some kind of synchronistic divine plan.' And he was right. After purchasing the more than 450-square-foot studio for $330,000, his mom told him they went to a party there with friends when he was a teenager. Now, nearly two decades later, Keller is parting ways with his beloved home at the Penny Lane co-op in Manhattan's Kips Bay. Listed for $425,000, the third-floor studio offers floor-to-ceiling windows, a Juliet balcony with city views, hardwood and tile floors and a ceiling fan. But it's the building's character that's driving the buzz. 9 The Tudor-style foyer designed to mimic a Liverpool streetscape makes the building a stand out. Marcio Honorato Photography Once home to the J.M. Horton Ice Cream Factory, the red brick building was converted into apartments in the mid-1970s by Beatles-obsessed developers. The Beatles, of course, were famously from Liverpool. The lobby was designed to mimic a quaint English streetscape, inspired by the Liverpool neighborhood referenced in the song 'Penny Lane.' 'It has this curious, cool lobby that recalls the kind of Tudor architecture of Liverpool,' listing representative Giulia Prestia of Century 21 Realty First told The Post. 'It harkens back to a New York City that we don't really see anymore.' 'And it has been maintained that way ever since,' she said. 9 Converted in 1976 by developers who were avid Beatles fans, the building's lobby was designed to evoke the song's lyrics, with red brick walls, Tudor-style timbers, faux slate roofs, porch-lit doorways and a black lamppost bearing a 'Penny Lane' sign in ornate script. Marcio Honorato Photography 9 Building amenities include a 24-hour doorman, laundry on every floor, on-site parking, and a sprawling roof deck with views of the Empire State and Chrysler buildings. Marcio Honorato Photography The co-op's interior plays up the theme with decorative facades, mock storefronts and a stylized streetscape that some visitors have compared to a scene from 'Willy Wonka.' 'Some people love it, some people hate it,' Prestia said. 'But it's very cool.' The building's past as a factory lends itself to some unusually lofty layouts. Though Keller's studio is a single-level unit, other apartments in the 179-unit building are duplexes or even triplexes, and some have generous proportions. 'Because it was a former ice cream factory … some of the units have extraordinarily tall ceilings,' Prestia said. 'That's not common, especially in neighborhoods like … Kips Bay.' 9 The Penny Lane, a seven-story co-op named after the iconic Beatles song. Michael Ochs Archives The co-op also features a 24-hour doorman, a live-in superintendent, laundry on every floor, and an expansive landscaped roof deck that once served as tennis courts and now offers views of the Empire State and Chrysler buildings. There's also bike storage, a recycling program that caught Keller's attention early on, and one of New York City's first organized composting systems that predated the green boom. 'Back in the day, I mean in 2007, it was a big deal,' he said. The building once had even more overt Beatles references. The neighboring parking garage — once part of the Penny Lane complex — featured murals of 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band,' 'Abbey Road,' and 1950s icons like Marilyn Monroe and James Dean. 'The developers were such Beatles fanatics that they had this mural commissioned,' Prestia said. 'When they renovated it, they painted right over it, which is such a huge loss.' 9 Dr. Scott Keller purchased the apartment in 2007 specifically for its Beatles lore — and he was drawn in part by a mural of Beatles album covers that once adorned the neighboring garage. Marcio Honorato Photography For Keller, who plays Beatles covers with his band and frequently performed at venues across New York and the Hamptons, the building was more than a home. 'It's sad because I love it. It's my baby,' he said. 'I've accomplished a great deal of success while I was living there, in my career and in my music career.' He added that the staff contributed to the home's magic. 'The people that work there on the staff have an energy and a joy about them,' Keller said. 'That is part of the feeling you get when you walk through the foyer.' Keller had long split his time between New York and Florida, but recently made the move permanent. 9 Now relocating to Florida, Keller is listing the third-floor unit, which features a Juliette balcony, southern exposure, and floor-to-ceiling windows — as well as this kitchen with good storage. Marcio Honorato Photography 9 isting agent Giulia Prestia noted that buildings like this are increasingly rare in a market that prioritizes sleek, modern design — this one offers something different: character, history and a sense of whimsy. Marcio Honorato Photography Renting the unit, he said, never felt like an option. 'The idea of renting it to other people, taking my space is making me crazy,' he said. 'And I don't want to rent it, so I just have to emotionally detach from it.' Still, Prestia thinks the apartment will strike the right chord with someone new. 'To find something at that price point in New York City is really quite rare,' she said. 'It's a great step up for someone who might be living with roommates and wants to make a move to owning.'

How finding Jho Low in luxury Shanghai enclave seems an impossible task
FUGITIVE financier Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low, wanted in connection with the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal, is allegedly residing in the upscale Green Hills compound in Shanghai, according to investigative journalists Bradley Hope and Tom Wright. The pair, who first exposed the scandal, claimed in a recent livestream that Low is using a forged Australian passport under the alias 'Constantinos Achilles Veis' to travel freely in China. Green Hills, built in 2004 and spanning 410,000 sqm in Pudong, is a high-security estate of Tudor-style bungalows favoured by wealthy locals and expats. Residents describe it as quiet and private, with little neighbourly interaction. Some acknowledge hearing rumours of 'famous businessmen' but express disinterest in their identities. The Singapore Straits Times visited the area. It says access was tightly controlled, with guards requiring a specific house number and surname for entry. Residents confirmed the estate is home to affluent families, many with children attending nearby international schools. Monthly rent can reach up to 100,000 yuan (S$12,500), and homes sell for as much as 150 million yuan. Malaysian authorities have cast doubt on the claim that Jho Low is living a great life in China, while Australia has raised concerns over the alleged use of a forged passport. China has long denied sheltering Low, whose whereabouts have been unknown since 2016. He was spotted in Macau, and a suspect in the 1MDB scandal died weeks after being deported to Malaysia to face questioning over his role in the US$4.5bil fraud. Kee Kok Thiam died in hospital in 2023 following a 'sudden massive stroke' and was cremated on Wednesday morning, Kee's family said in a statement. Nevertheless, the renewed allegations highlight ongoing frustrations in tracking down Low, a central figure in the multi-billion-dollar scandal that led to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's imprisonment. The journalists who revealed Jho Low's Shanghai domain have also hit back at our Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution, who said last week that Malaysia did not have any credible evidence of Jho Low's whereabouts. This led to Tom Wright asking on the X platform whether Saifuddin was calling them liars. There has been no response from the Home Ministry since then. — July 26, 2025

Looking for Jho Low: Is the 1MDB fugitive really hiding in Shanghai luxury enclave?
Across the Huangpu River in Pudong, behind high fences and dense greenery, lies a sprawling enclave with over 400 Tudor-style bungalows, manicured gardens and tree-lined roads dotted with Teslas, Jaguars and other luxury cars. This exclusive gated compound, which more closely resembles the quaint English countryside than a Chinese megacity, is where Malaysian financial fugitive Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, is allegedly living, according to the journalists who first exposed the 1MDB scandal. On July 19, investigative duo Bradley Hope and Tom Wright, in a live stream titled Finding Jho Low, claimed that Low lives in Green Hills, an upscale residential compound in Shanghai. They also alleged that Low is using a forged Australian passport under the Greek alias "Constantinos Achilles Veis" to travel freely within China, citing evidence from unnamed sources and newly obtained documents. Mr Hope and Mr Wright are former journalists at The Wall Street Journal who played key roles in uncovering the multi-billion-dollar fraud that resulted in the imprisonment of former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak for corruption and money laundering. Low's whereabouts have remained a mystery since he disappeared in 2016, fuelling years of speculation. When The Straits Times visited the Green Hills compound over two days, residents spoke of a quiet residential estate where neighbours rarely cross paths or interact due to the sprawling grounds. Three residents told ST that they have heard of celebrities and "famous businessmen" who live in the estate, but all said they did not know who and did not care to find out. A resident, whose house is located right by the estate's side gate, told ST that he barely recognises anyone who lives in the compound, including his next-door neighbour, as their houses are separated by large gardens. "The only time I ever went through the whole estate was when I first moved here five years ago to check out the surroundings; now I just enter the gate and go straight into my home," he said. This reporter was unable to enter the estate as security guards at all three entrances required visitors to provide the house number they were visiting as well as the surname of the family living there. Built in 2004, the 410,000 sqm Green Hills compound is a residential enclave favoured by wealthy locals and expats, largely because there are two international schools - Dulwich and Concordia - in the vicinity. It is surrounded by other similarly luxurious landed home compounds and sits by a river where people occasionally kayak. Property agents who are actively marketing the homes for rent told ST that a key feature is the double-height ceiling living room, which allows for large gatherings. Marketing videos on Chinese social media platforms show that many of these three-storey homes are opulently appointed and typically have between four and eight bedrooms. Built in 2004, the 410,000 sqm Green Hills compound is a residential enclave favoured by wealthy locals and expats. ST PHOTO: MICHELLE NG Monthly rental for a standalone bungalow - the largest house type with up to 500 sqm of internal floor area - is between 70,000 yuan (S$12,500) and 100,000 yuan, agents said. The selling price for one of these is between 70 million yuan and 150 million yuan. Rental for a semi-detached house is around 40,000 yuan while that for a terrace house, referred to as a townhouse in China, is around 30,000 yuan. Outside Green Hills, a resident who was getting on a shared bicycle told ST that the bulk of the people who live there are families whose children attend the international schools, or are older Chinese who do not need to fret over money, like her parents. "Basically every household here has at least two cars, one everyday car like a BMW or Mercedes-Benz, and the other is more fancy… maybe a sports car," she said, adding that she is "not one of them" as she is living under her parents' roof. When asked if she had heard of Low's alleged residence in the compound, she said no. "All kinds of people live around here, I don't really care who they are as long as my life is not disrupted." Rumours that Low is living in China have swirled since at least 2019, when a photo purportedly showing him at Shanghai Disneyland on Christmas Eve emerged online. China has consistently denied sheltering him or having knowledge of his location. ST has contacted the Shanghai authorities for comments. Low, who has repeatedly claimed his innocence, has been wanted by multiple jurisdictions, including Malaysia, Singapore and the United States, since 2016 for his alleged role in siphoning an estimated US$4.5 billion (S$5.77 billion) from 1MDB, Malaysia's sovereign fund. Low is accused of pocketing US$1.42 billion from three bond transactions that Goldman Sachs arranged for 1MDB. On July 24, Malaysian Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that the report about Low's location and the passport he allegedly is using is "not supported by credible proof". In response to the report, Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade issued a statement warning that passport fraud is a serious offence under Australian law. In 2023, Malaysia's anti-graft regulator told Qatari news network Al Jazeera in a written response that it suspected Low to be hiding in the Chinese special administrative region of Macau. Entrances to Green Hills, a sprawling gated residential enclave with over 400 Tudor-styled bungalows, manicured gardens and tree-lined roads in Shanghai. ST PHOTO: MICHELLE NG The scandal, described by the United States Justice Department as the largest case of kleptocracy it had ever investigated, first came to public attention in 2015 when reports emerged that nearly US$700 million was suspected to have been transferred from 1MDB into then-Prime Minister Najib Razak's personal bank account. US prosecutors claim that more than US$4.5 billion was ultimately embezzled from the fund by high-level officials of the fund and their associates, with the money laundered through a global network of shell companies and bank accounts. The stolen funds were allegedly used to finance Low's extravagant lifestyle spanning jewellery, fine art, luxury real estate, a superyacht, lavish parties and even the production of the Hollywood film The Wolf of Wall Street.
