Journalists told to embrace AI

Kota Kinabalu: Journalists are urged to embrace artificial intelligence (AI) tools in their daily news reporting tasks to keep up with the demands of today's fast-paced digital world. Director of the Tun Abdul Razak Broadcasting and Information Institute (IPPTAR), Roslan Ariffin, said the ongoing wave of digitalisation requires media practitioners to continuously upgrade their skills and adapt to emerging technologies. 'The media industry is becoming more challenging. Journalists must be capable of adapting to the latest technologies – it's the key to staying relevant and moving forward,' he said when speaking at the closing ceremony of the Smart Journalism: AI Tools for Faster, Smarter Reporting course held here. The three-day course, which began on Tuesday (July 29), was attended by 25 media practitioners from various agencies across Sabah. He said the course covered AI applications for idea generation, drafting, audio transcription, and complex data analysis – all of which are revolutionary tools to enhance news reporting. 'Over the past three days, participants were introduced to a wide range of AI tools designed to make journalism faster, more efficient and impactful. 'This is what IPPTAR aims to provide – spreading knowledge and technology to more media professionals nationwide. 'It's crucial for all journalists to keep learning and improving, especially as the media landscape continues to evolve,' he added. Speaking to reporters after the event, Roslan said IPPTAR is committed to creating more learning opportunities for media practitioners in Sabah to support the growth of the local journalism scene. He said one of the biggest challenges facing the industry today is the spread of fake news. 'We are in an era where misinformation spreads rapidly. As ethical journalists, we must steer clear of false reporting and stay committed to our responsibility as dedicated media professionals. 'Sabah, in particular, is heading into its 17th State Election soon, so reporters are under pressure to cover the news extensively. I urge them to apply all the AI knowledge gained during this course to produce quality, ethical reporting,' he said. KOTA KINABALU, July 31 (Bernama) – The Tun Abdul Razak Broadcasting and Information Institute (IPPTAR) is committed to enhancing the professionalism of the media community, especially journalists, through various courses including exposure to artificial intelligence (AI) technology in line with digital transformation and the evolving media landscape. Its director, Roslan Ariffin, said courses on AI are crucial because the ability of the media community to adapt to and leverage the latest technologies is key to remaining competitive and relevant in an increasingly challenging digital era. He said AI is no longer just a 'jargon' but an essential tool in making journalistic tasks faster and more efficient, from idea generation, draft writing, and audio transcription to data analysis. 'The knowledge gained throughout this course is hoped to be applied and subsequently improve the quality and reach of news delivered to the public. 'Continue to explore and adapt to new technologies because the media landscape will constantly evolve,' he said during the closing ceremony of the 'SMART Journalism Course: AI Tools for Faster, Smarter Reporting' organised by IPPTAR here today. A total of 25 media practitioners from various Sabah news agencies participated in the three-day course, which concluded today. Roslan said IPPTAR hopes the course will provide significant added value to the skills and knowledge of journalists in Sabah. Meanwhile, speaking to reporters, Roslan said IPPTAR plans to organise more regular courses and training sessions specifically for media practitioners in Sabah to further strengthen their skills in the field. This includes conducting courses in Kota Kinabalu or inviting Sabah-based media personnel to Kuala Lumpur to attend focused training sessions, not only on AI technology but also on other topics such as photography, graphics, and drone operation, he added.

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 (Bernama) – The Tun Abdul Razak Broadcasting and Information Institute (IPPTAR) plays a key role in shaping the new generation—referred to as Gen Z—to become ethical communicators, said its Director, Roslan Ariffin. He said that in pursuit of this goal, emphasis and guidance on communication ethics must be nurtured from an early stage in tandem with the advancement of digital technology, so that the voices of the new generation become a positive force in communication. 'Today's generation is incredibly fast—everything is fast, speech is fast, WhatsApp is fast—and their voices and ways of connecting transcend boundaries… so we need to give them proper guidance and emphasis, with the hope that they communicate ethically. 'This also aligns with the theme of IPPTAR's Open Day celebration tomorrow, which is 'Suara Generasi, Kuasa Komunikasi (Voice of the Generation, Power of Communication),' he said when appearing as a guest on BERNAMA TV's Ruang Bicara programme tonight. Commenting further, Roslan said that IPPTAR Open Day, now in its second year, serves as a platform to attract young people to come and learn more about the institute. 'The content we have prepared is largely aimed at drawing in this group, most of whom today aspire to be influencers—but to become influencers, they must first be good communicators. 'By getting to know IPPTAR, they may one day come to regard it with affection and pride as an institution that educates and trains them in the world of communication,' he said. He added that in facing the latest technologies, including the explosion of artificial intelligence (AI), IPPTAR continues to progress and evolve to become a leading training institution in the field of communication to meet current needs. He said the National Day logo featuring Malaysia Madani will also be maintained until 2027. 'The theme portrays the government's priority to ensure the welfare of the rakyat will be emphasised,' he said when launching the theme and logo at Angkasapuri here yesterday. Fahmi said National Day 2025 will commence with the launch event on July 25 in Muar, Johor, while the main event on Aug 31 will once again be held at Dataran Putrajaya. To further strengthen the unity of the country's regions and states, Malaysia Day on Sept 16 will be held in Penang, he added. 'Choosing Penang as the venue is in line with the rotation practice among Sabah, Sarawak and states in the peninsula to further strengthen the unity among the territories and states,' he explained. He also said that several programmes have been outlined leading up to the main event in August and September, including 1 Rumah 1 Jalur Gemilang, Merdeka Countdown, Quran Hour and Wayang Pacak Merdeka. 'The flying of the Jalur Gemilang campaign this year will see an addition of two new clusters – industry and government agencies – on top of five clusters from last year. 'This campaign is to encourage the rakyat to fly the Jalur Gemilang at their premises to show respect and care for the country,' said Fahmi, who is also the National Day and Malaysia Day Main Committee chairman. 'Malaysia Madani: Rakyat Disantuni,' theme of 2025 National Day, Malaysia Day celebrations
KUALA LUMPUR: 'Malaysia Madani: Rakyat Disantuni' is this year's National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations, with the Malaysia Madani logo remaining the official symbol. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the theme reflects the government's priority in protecting people's welfare, following the Malaysia Madani aspiration that upholds the values of unity and prosperity. "…several key events have been planned to ignite the spirit of independence, among them the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang launch ceremony, which will take place on July 27 at Dataran Tanjung Emas, Muar, Johor. "The National Day 2025 celebration will be held on Aug 31 at Dataran Putrajaya, while this year's Malaysia Day celebration will occur on Sept 16 in Penang in line with the rotational practice whereby the location alternates each year between Sabah, Sarawak, and Peninsular Malaysia," he said. He spoke to reporters during the weekly press conference held at the Tun Abdul Razak Broadcasting and Information Institute in Angkasapuri. Transport Minister Anthony Loke and Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi were also present. Fahmi also announced that 14 complementary events will be held, including the Merdeka Countdown, the 2025 Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang, and Wayang Pacak Merdeka (open-air cinema). He added that the 1 Rumah 1 Jalur Gemilang initiative, introduced last year to encourage Malaysians to fly the national flag, will continue this year with two additional new clusters, the industrial cluster and the government agency cluster. "In 2024, we successfully implemented this programme across five clusters, with a total of 698 activities carried out. The five participating clusters were Education, Higher Education, Health, Security, and Community. "This programme will encourage Malaysians to fly the Jalur Gemilang at their homes, offices, business premises, government agencies and their vehicles," he said. Fahmi also reminded the public to observe proper etiquette when flying the Jalur Gemilang, including not using damaged or torn flags. "The public can get more information about the celebrations, programme locations, and campaign materials through the official Merdeka360 portal," he added.
