TAR UMT Foundation: Business Success

IN an ever-evolving educational landscape, choosing the right university can significantly influence one's academic and professional career. Low Ee Xuan, currently a student at Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT), choose the Foundation in Business as it met her aspiration to pursue her ambition in commerce. Low's decision to study at TAR UMT was driven by both practical and personal considerations. 'I chose TAR UMT because of its high-quality education and affordable fees. I also have a friend studying at TAR UMT and she spoke about the conducive learning environment, vast campus surroundings and the university's good support system to help students in all aspects, including financial support,' she shared. 'Another key advantage, the university offers a dual degree programme. The option to pursue a dual degree is attractive as I have the opportunity to study abroad, where I can experience different cultures, and environments as well as work with peers from different countries. Such experiences are essential in today's landscape,' said Low. Another reason she chose to study the Foundation in Business was her interest and ambition to learn more about the different aspects of business. 'I was attracted to the programme's comprehensive approach, which covers topics like accounting, finance, marketing, and management. Also I was eager to understand how businesses adapt to a changing world, and my belief was in the foundation programme,' she shared. The shift from high school to the foundation programme posed a challenge for Low, 'Compared to my high school years where the pace and structure was more controlled, university life is different as each course in the foundation programme delves deeper into a specific subject. 'The assignments are more complex and specific. For example, one of the assignments included examining the nature of a company's surrounding competitors, its financial status and marketing activities. The experience was not only interesting but also surreal, similar to an actual business analysis. 'I also enjoyed the subject, 'Principles of Marketing', especially the connection between psychology and consumer behaviour. Certain courses were challenging especially Management Information Systems (MIS). Fortunately, I received help from my lecturers and friends who were willing to explain the concepts to me, so I could better comprehend the subject,' shared Low. Although the programme duration is only for a year, foundation students are still required to be active in co-curricular activities. 'It was challenging in the beginning having to maintain a balanced campus lifestyle but this taught me how to manage my time well. I prepared a detailed daily schedule for attending classes, studying and participating in co-curricular activities. In following this schedule, it became a habit and I felt good that I could spend my time well in a day with important and useful activities and tasks,' said Low. For more information on TAR UMT's Foundation programmes, visit TAR UMT's Open Day on 17-18 & 24-25 May & 14-15 June 2025, 10 am to 5 pm. Accounting excellence the TAR UMT way

As one of the oldest professions in civilised history, accountancy, finance and business are undoubtedly among the more popular tertiary education options to study in Malaysia or even globally. With so many institutions offering accountancy, finance and business programmes, many students will not be looking for just a degree, they will consider institutions that can provide additional benefits such as an industry-relevant academic syllabus, qualified teaching staff, compelling study experience, or a fast track to a professional qualification. Among the institutions that fulfill all these qualities is Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT), which has produced many accounting, finance and business graduates for over five decades. One of the key aspects that strengthen TAR UMT's position is the university's partnership with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) that dates back to 1971. This long-term partnership has resulted in the university consistently nurturing and producing highly skilled graduates for more than five decades. Such a solid track record has also positioned TAR UMT as ACCA's Platinum Approved Learning Partner, the highest and most prestigious level of approval awarded by ACCA to institution partners that meet their global best practice benchmarks. On top of that, TAR UMT holds the distinction of being the one and only institution in the world to conduct the Internally Assessed ACCA Applied Skills programme. As such, upon completing their studies in relevant accountancy, finance and business degree programmes, TAR UMT students will be exempted from up to nine ACCA Applied Knowledge and ACCA Skill level papers. With that, TAR UMT students are able to complete the ACCA examinations much quicker than usual. It is such benefits that draw many students like Ng Shu Cynn and Er Xin Ni to pursue their studies at TAR UMT. Shu Cynn who completed her Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) programme, also added another feather to her cap by scoring the highest mark in Malaysia and fourth in the World for the Advanced Taxation (ATX) paper in the ACCA September 2024 examination. "Studying the ACCA syllabus would have been more challenging if I did not have knowledgeable and supportive lecturers. They have been an important part of my journey in preparation for the examinations.' "In addition, with the exemptions, I am now only one paper away from completing my ACCA exam, which will give me a huge advantage in my own professional growth," said Shu Cynn, who is currently working as a tax associate. Xin Ni, another Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) graduate, echoed Shu Cynn's sentiments about the advantages of studying for ACCA in TAR UMT. The Kuala Lumpur-born lass obtained the highest mark in Malaysia for the Advanced Financial Management (AFM) paper and highest combined mark in Malaysia for the ACCA June 2024 examinations. 'Based on my own study experience, I can confidently say that the opportunity to graduate with both an honours degree and a globally recognised professional qualification is a huge boon to those who are aiming for a bright future in this field. 'Although at one point I had to study online due to the pandemic, my lecturers have always gone the extra mile to help us understand the topics. Their methods of breaking down complicated concepts using simple metaphors, and encouraging active discussions using real-world case studies were of great help to me. I not only understood what was being taught but I have also picked up good interactive skills which are helping me a lot in my career.' 'I can now tick completing ACCA examinations and move on to obtaining the necessary work experience to become a full-fledged ACCA member in the future,' Xin Ni added. TAR UMT's continuous dedication and commitment to bring the globally recognised professional accountancy qualification to Malaysia has resulted in the University producing over 100 ACCA prizewinners since 1971. To find out more about accountancy, finance and business programmes offered in TAR UMT, visit the varsity during its Open Day from April 26 - 27, 10am to 5pm, at TAR UMT KL campus and/or all TAR UMT branches nationwide. AI exposure for graduates

TO cultivate a digital-centric ecosystem and support the Government's call in intensifying adoption of a STEM-related curriculum, Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) has begun empowering secondary school students and educators through various AI educational workshops. These workshops are not only to create interest among students and set them on a pathway towards AI or STEM-related studies, but also to equip school teachers with AI-related knowledge so they can guide students in learning AI. Throughout the past year, Assoc Prof Dr Tan Chi Wee, a programme leader from TAR UMT's computing and IT faculty spearheaded these workshops held at various secondary schools across Malaysia. Some of the workshops were also held at national-level events, at the Kuala Lumpur Engineering and Science Fair (KLESF) and Program Duta Guru (PDG) Symposium by Yayasan Petronas and Ministry of Education (MOE) Malaysia. 'These workshops aim to demystify AI by introducing participants to the basic concepts in an engaging and accessible way while equipping them with essential AI knowledge and skills,' said Dr Tan. According to him, developing interest in AI and STEM at a young age is very crucial due to the increasing demand for tech-related skills. 'As AI reshapes industries, having a foundational knowledge in AI gives school students a competitive advantage. An early exposure to AI fosters a tech-savvy generation, help bridge the digital divide, ignite curiosity, and inspire innovation,' he added. The learning process for TAR UMT's computing and IT students is not confined to classrooms alone. Assoc Prof Dr Tew Yiqi, another programme leader in the computing and IT faculty, has been guiding TAR UMT students in the annual WorldSkills Malaysia Belia (WSMB) competitions under the Internet of Things (IoT) category. Dr Tew's expert guidance has led to TAR UMT students winning various awards in WSMB, with the latest group of students winning the gold, silver, and bronze awards in WSMB 2024. 'Competing at the national level was an incredible experience. It challenged us to be creative, adapt, think critically, and solve problems even when under pressure,' said Kong Weng Cheng, who teamed up with his coursemate Yong Jia Ying to win the Gold award in WSMB 2024. To find out more about TAR UMT's computing and information technology programmes, visit during Open Day from 26-27 April at TAR UMT KL Campus and/or all TAR UMT branches nationwide.
