'Bahut neeche girane ki koshish...': Kapkapiii actor Tusshar Kapoor admits harsh judgments about looks almost crushed him
While nepotism has become a hot topic in Bollywood in recent years, there was a time when actors from film families weren't under such intense public examination. In a recent interview, Tusshar Kapoor reflected on his debut year in the industry and shared how certain individuals attempted to undermine his journey and also tried to pull him down. Tusshar Kapoor on facing harsh criticism over his looks In an interview with Hindustan Times, Tusshar Kapoor reflected on his debut in Bollywood with Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai in 2001. He acknowledged that while the conversation around nepotism wasn't as dominant back then, it had already begun to surface. He mentioned that being from a film family often invited extra scrutiny from a section of the media, who seemed to view everything with a critical lens. He noted that one had to develop a thick skin in such an environment, as there were constant attempts to bring him down. Tusshar shared that, in his early days, a particular segment of the media was often critical of star kids, seemingly determined to find flaws in whatever they did. He reportedly recalled that if one attended a press event in a natural look without makeup or hairstyling, the criticism would be "hero dikhne laayak nahi ho." The Kapkapii actor reflected that he considered himself fortunate to have had the willpower to face criticism and stay focused on his work. Recalling the release of his debut film Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai, he noted that its success played a crucial role in keeping him motivated. Otherwise, he admitted, the pressure could have overwhelmed him. He clarified that he did not enter the film industry with the intent to meet anyone else's expectations, but there were constant efforts to judge and hinder his journey. However, he emphasized that the audience remains sincere and unbiased, as they judge actors purely based on their on-screen performances. Kapoor challenged the popular belief that star kids automatically have an easy journey in the film industry. He clarified that being the child of a celebrity doesn't necessarily mean having a smooth ride. While he acknowledged that landing a debut film might be relatively easier for star kids, he emphasized that even this opportunity is not guaranteed. What follows, the completion of that film and the career decisions made afterward, remains uncertain. He pointed out that constant scrutiny and the persistent perception that "the glass is always half empty" are challenges star kids often have to confront and rise above.

Tusshar Kapoor Reveals How He Was Targeted For Being A Star Kid: "Hero Dikhne Laayak Nahi Ho"
New Delhi: Tusshar Kapoor made his big Bollywood debut in 2001 with Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai, alongside Kareena Kapoor Khan. Jeetendra's son Tusshar Kapoor recently got candid about discussions surrounding nepotism. He spoke about how today it is more rampant, but even two decades ago, it still existed. Tusshar told Hindustan Times, "It had started in my time, too. Especially if you were from a film background, then the glass is always half empty for a certain section of the media. You have to be very thick-skinned. Bahut neecha giraane ki koshish, bahut negativity thi (There were efforts to pull you down, a lot of negativity)." Furthermore, speaking about how certain section of the media tried to derail his career and pull him down, Tusshar added, "If you come to a press conference naturally without makeup and hair, you are criticised that aap hero d ikhne ke laayak nahi ho (you don't look like a hero). If you come with makeup and hair done, you are told you are too filmy. Everyone was trying to pull you down." Tusshar concluded by saying, "I feel fortunate enough to have the willpower to tolerate it and just concentrate on my work. That work ethic is what took me forward. The film (Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai) was released, and it did really well. Otherwise, I could have been crushed under this pressure. I didn't come into the industry feeling I had to live up to someone's expectations. But there was an attempt to constantly judge and derail my path. But the audience is very pure. They will judge you based on what they see on the screen." He furthermore shared that it is not that easy for star kids. The first film is easier, but even there it is a matter of chance. It is all about how one finishes the first film and then the choices made thereafter.

Tusshar Kapoor is not worried about Kapkapiii being compared with Romancham: 'A huge audience has not watched it'
Tusshar Kapoor reunited with Sangeeth Sivan after two decades with Kapkapiii. The film marked the actor-director combination's first reunion since their 2004 sleeper hit, Kya Kool Hain Hum. However, Sivan could not see the film's release as he died in May 2024 after a cardiac arrest. Now, as Kapkapiii hits the screens, Tusshar speaks with HT about the bittersweet feeling of celebrating it and more. Elaborating on how it feels to not have Sangeeth during the promotions, Tusshar says, "It's a little unbelievable because we spent so many days and moments together, from workshops to the wrap party. We worked together after so long, after Kya Kool Hain Hum. He was there till the dubbing, too. Sometimes it just seems very hard to fathom. But we are living in such times where nothing surprises you anymore. One has to just accept whatever comes your way. It's a bittersweet feeling. I am sad that he isn't here, but happy about the fact that his work, his film, is releasing on time and in the manner he intended." Kapkapiii is a horror comedy that also stars Shreyas Talpade, Siddhi Idnani, Jay Thakkar, and Sonia Rathee. The film is the official remake of the 2023 Malayalam hit Romancham. When asked if he was worried that Romancham's popularity on OTT could be added pressure for Kapkapiii, Tusshar says, "That definitely is a slight concern. But, I'd like to believe that Romanchan has its own niche audience in the south. There is a huge audience base that has not watched it. For instance, I would want to watch a remake in the theatres with actors I can identify with. I'll keep that as my first option. Both languages are equal for me. But when a film releases in Hindi, I'll go and watch it regardless of whether it's a remake, and there are millions of others like me." Tusshar adds that Kapkapiii is not a shot-by-shot remake. "We have given it a new take," he adds, "Even though it is a remake of Romancham, there is a freshness. There's a new vibe and elements that have been enhanced and added. Sangeeth ji has given his own twist to it with the horror and romance. There is a lot more to it." Kapkapiii releases in theatres on May 23.

Tusshar Kapoor Reveals People Pulled Him Down For Being A Star Kid
Last Updated: Tusshar Kapoor said that the discourse around nepotism began during his time and people tried to pull him down for his family background. Ever since making his acting debut with Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai in 2001, Tusshar Kapoor, the son of 70s' star Jeetendra, has been trying to make a mark in the industry. Despite delivering some hits like Golmaal franchise, The Dirty Picture and Shootout At Wadala, all of which were multi-starrers, the actor failed to maintain a strong hold among the audience. Now, Tusshar Kapoor has opened up on the scrutiny he faced in the initial stage of his career, adding that the debate around nepotism began during his time and people tried to pull him down for his family background. In a candid chat with Hindustan Times, Tusshar Kapoor recalls the existing scrutiny from a section of the media two decades back. When asked about Nepotism, he said, 'It had started in my time, too," adding, 'Especially if you were from a film background, then the glass is always half empty for a certain section of the media. You have to be very thick-skinned. Bahut neecha giraane ki koshish, bahut negativity thi (There were efforts to pull you down, a lot of negativity)." Talking further, Tusshar mentioned that a certain section of the media would target star kids, often commenting on their appearance, pulling them down. Having been a part of the industry for 24 years, Tusshar Kapoor now feels fortunate enough to have the 'willpower' to rise against all the odds and concentrate on his work. He continued, 'I didn't come into the industry feeling I had to live up to someone's expectations. But there was an attempt to constantly judge and derail my path. But the audience is very pure. They will judge you based on what they see on the screen." Tusshar also had more to say about the general perception that star kids are born with the proverbial silver spoon. However, Tusshar added that is not true. In a blunt statement, he added that the actors with a film background may get their first film much more easily but have to face constant scrutiny for the decisions they make further in their career. Tusshar Kapoor is currently entertaining fans with his role in the horror comedy Kapkapiii. Directed by Sangeeth Sivan, the film also stars Shreyas Talpade in a key role. It arrived in theatres on May 23. First Published:
