Another blow for United with Liam Delap set for Chelsea move despite agreeing personal terms with Old Trafford

Young forward Delap has been on the radar for several clubs after scoring 12 goals in the 2024-25 season for Ipswich Town, the team that has been relegated after finishing second-from-bottom in the standings. read more Liam Delap scored 12 goals and was the lone bright spot in what was otherwise a disappointing Premier League season for Ipswich Town. Reuters Hardly anything is going right for Manchester United these days. After registering their lowest finish in the top-flight in five decades with a 15th-place finish, missing out on European competition by losing the UEFA Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur and even losing a friendly against the ASEAN All Stars in Malaysia on Wednesday, United are set to lose a prospective signing to Chelsea. This after forward Liam Delap, whose team Ipswich Town was among those relegated in the recently-concluded Premier League season, has 'given the green light' to joining Enzo Maresca's side this summer despite agreeing personal terms with the 'Red Devils'. Delap had an impressive run with 12 goals in the last season even as Ipswich struggled to make an impact and could collect just four wins in 38 games. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Delap, who had spent five years at Manchester City before his move to Ipswich Town, thus became a target for several clubs, with Chelsea and United among those looking to secure the promising young forward for the next season. The fact that he has a relatively cheap release clause worth £30 million following Ipswich's relegeation is also what has boosted other clubs' interest in him. More from Football Delap had reportedly agreed to personal terms with United recently, with the Ruben Amorim-managed club then reaching out to Ipswich regarding the release clause. Champions League the reason behind sudden inclination towards Chelsea? However, according to talkSPORT, Delap is now closing in on a move to Stamford Bridge instead of Old Trafford. And that might have something to do with the fact that while Chelsea have qualified for the UEFA Champions League after finishing fourth in the last Premier League season, United will be missing out on European football in the next season, for the first time in a decade. Delap might have reconsidered had United defeated Tottenham in the Europa League final to qualify for the Champions League despite finishing 10 places below the qualification zone on the Premier League table. Chelsea, meanwhile, would have guaranteed European action even if they failed to qualify for the top-seven, having defeated Real Betis in the UEFA Conference League final on Wednesday to qualify for the Europa League next season. Maresca's side, however, have ensured they get to play in the most elite continental club competition of them all with their Premier League run. Besides Chelsea and United, Newcastle United and Everton were also on the hunt for Delap with Newcastle also qualifying for the Champions League after finishing fifth, the final qualifying spot.

Amorim says will quit with no payoff if Man Utd want new boss

United are 16th in the table with one league game remaining, against Aston Villa on Sunday. An emotional Amorim told reporters after the game that he would stick to his guns despite a terrible run of results since he took over from the sacked Erik ten Hag in November. The former Sporting Lisbon boss, who has won just six Premier League games at United, said he still believed in his ability to turn things around at Old Trafford but would walk if he was no longer wanted. "If the board and the fans feel that I'm not the right guy, I will go the next day without any conversation about compensation," he said. "But I will not quit. I'm really confident in my job. And as you can see, I will not change nothing in the way I do things." Amorim refused to talk about the future of the club, saying United needed to "deal with the loss and the pain of losing this match". "What I can say is that I think it was clear we were the better team but then we managed not to score again and that is really hard to win football matches but the guys tried everything to win the game," he said. "In the future we will have time to assess everything." United were within striking distance of the Champions League places when Amorim took over as manager but they are now 27 points adrift of fifth-placed Chelsea. Next season will be their first without European football since the 2014/15 campaign. "We need to understand that it is tough for a club like ours not to be in the Champions League," said Amorim. "But we have to use the other side. If we have more time, we have more time to think, to work during the week and to be better in the Premier League. That will be our focus." - AFP More Like This Newly appointed Real Madrid's coach Xabi Alonso gives a press conference during his official presentation at Real Madrid Sports City in Valdebebas, near Madrid, on May 26, 2025. Roy Keane slams Ruben Amorim's mentality despite win over Aston Villa

Manchester United legend Roy Keane offered a burning assessment of his former team's performance despite a hopeful 2-0 win over Aston Villa on the final day of the Premier League season. While the result may have meant little in the grand scheme of things, with Man United ending the season in 15th place, it was at least a reason for optimism, given the team's rare determined performance. Advertisement Numerous players who struggled in the UEFA Europa League final defeat did well to show up for the Old Trafford crowd, with Amad Diallo proving to be a standout player while Bruno Fernandes was back to his usual self. Still, this bright performance was not enough to inject optimism into Keane. 'They can't be any worse next year,' Keane said on Sky Sports when asked how he felt about manager Ruben Amorim's speech to the Old Trafford crowd after the final whistle. 'They'll have to improve. Obviously, a few players' contracts are up. They'll leave, they'll go back to recruitment.' 'They certainly need to get players in who know, I think, the Premier League. I think the majority of signings over the last two or three years are players who have never played in the Premier League,' Keane explained, criticising the club's current transfer strategy. 'And they've struggled to adapt to it. Particularly when they've brought so many players in.' Advertisement 'So I think they have to go back to basics and get some really good, proper, experienced players who know the Premier League and who are men and who are robust and who can turn up week in and week out and who can do a good job for Man United.' When questioned about why he feels that way, Keane provided a simple answer: 'I think when you bring so many players in from abroad who've not played in the Premier League, I think it's a challenge.' He then turned his attention to the declining calibre of the United lineup. 'United are easy to play against and they're easy to beat. To me, that's the biggest insult on this United group at the moment.' But while Keane had plenty to say about the players, he didn't leave out Amorim in his scathing review. Advertisement 'I'm intrigued when I hear a manager say we're gonna have less games, as if that guarantees success,' he continued. 'Part of playing for a big club is more games,' Keane concluded, visibly annoyed by the claim that more free time would help to result in better preparation. ''I've got a free week with the players…' and then they don't back it up with a result, as if having a free week is always good for a football club.' You want to be busy, you want to be playing football. That's where you learn, that's where you get your experiences.' 'As if he's going to produce a magic wand to turn some of these players into top players because he's got a free week? That's bizarre in itself,' Keane concluded. Advertisement While Keane may be just one voice, he raises an important point – not only about Amorim's outlook but the club's transfer strategy. Something has to change in order for United to return to their former glory. Featured image Alex Livesey via Getty Images Follow us on Bluesky: @
