What is UEFN in Fortnite? New Squid Game collab and custom islands explained
The State of Unreal showcase has brought some major Fortnite announcements including the Squid Game and Avatar: The Last Airbender crossovers, but many players are questioning exactly what UEFN is Fortnite has made a number of announcements at this year's State of Unreal showcase – but many players are left scratching their heads about what they actually mean for the game. Despite leakers hinting that some major Fortnite news would be unveiled at the State of Unreal showcase on Tuesday, June 4, players didn't get what they were hoping for. In fact, they might have ended up more puzzled than before. As the end of the Galactic Battle season draws near, and players prepare to bid farewell to the Star Wars -themed island and board the massive Star Destroyer for the last time, anticipation for a new season is building. With the Fortnite Chapter 6 Season 4 start date looming, players are bracing themselves for a significant shake-up as they power through the last of the Galactic Battle Battle Pass before it's gone for good. However, it's not just in Battle Royale and Zero Build where we're witnessing changes, as the State of Unreal has shown – indeed, creative is set to expand even further with some major crossovers for creators that could genuinely revolutionize how the system is used. This has raised a question among players – what exactly is UEFN in Fortnite? And what role does Squid Game play in all of this? Here's what you need to know. What is UEFN in Fortnite? UEFN, more commonly known as Unreal Editor for Fortnite, is a tool that allows creators in Fortnite to design their own Islands. This gives them the opportunity to construct new games using Epic Games ' assets which players can access for free. It's a PC application designed to assist players in designing, building and publishing games directly into the Fortnite launcher, much like Roblox. The capabilities of the system are detailed on its Epic Games Store page, revealing that it can be used to create custom content with modelling and material tools, construct fresh landscapes, and utilise systems like Control Rig, MetaHuman and World Partition. What's particularly intriguing for the average player is that it employs a number of Fortnite assets including some from major companies that have collaborated with the game. Creators have been given access to structures, character models and NPCs from Lego, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Walking Dead. It's a splendid system for both players and creators, and it has helped elevate Fortnite from being a fantastic Battle Royale game to being a grand games platform. What is the Fortnite Squid Game collaboration? The State of Unreal showcase (via YouTube) revealed that a Fortnite Squid Game collaboration is on the horizon, just in time for the show's third and final season. It won't simply end with the expected cosmetics, either, as UEFN will also receive a new collection of Squid Game tools. This is an ideal partnership for the game-creation system, especially considering when the series first landed, Roblox and UEFN were inundated with imitation games hoping to engage players with Red Light, Green Light and the rest of the show's treacherous mini-games. Now creators will have the opportunity to do this all over again with officially licensed character models, buildings, and more. However, the Fortnite Squid Game collaboration isn't the only one coming to UEFN. Epic Games also unveiled that a new Avatar: The Last Airbender crossover with the tool is set for 2026, and Star Wars will follow later. The former is thrilling, but the latter is particularly groundbreaking as such a crossover will give total control of Star Wars characters to creators on a major platform. Given Disney's protectiveness of its IP, this certainly places a lot of trust in creators to do it justice. If you've been wondering about what UEFN in Fortnite actually is, you'll likely find out first-hand soon as a significant wave of new content arrives in the game with each new content crossover. UEFN in Fortnite is a significant development, essentially turning Epic Games' favourite offspring into a total gaming powerhouse that aspiring creators can utilise to provide you with a new game to play. Have a go at fishing in the creative island tab of the game and see what you can discover before it's overrun by Squid Game experiences. Because it will. 'Fortnite' To Release AI-Powered NPCs
Summary Artificial intelligence may not have taken over the world yet, but it's certainly making waves inFortnite. Since the introduction of the Unreal Editor forFortnite(UEFN) in 2023, creators have been able to build, collaborate on fully customizable islands and much more. Now,Epic Gamesis pushing the boundaries even further with AI-powered non-playable characters (NPCs). In early experimentation of an AI-powered Darth Vader character added in game, the character could interact with players and even join their squad if they gain his loyalty by defeating him. While this was a hit with fans, it also highlighted early issues — most notably, the lack of filtered dialogue, which allowed the AI to be prompted into swearing. Epic Games quickly acknowledged the problem and added parental controls as well. Now, Epic Games is taking things a step further. At the 'State of Unreal' keynote, the company offered a glimpse intoFortnite'sfuture with the introduction of Mr. Buttons — an AI-powered NPC capable of holding real-time, unscripted conversations. Unlike traditional scripted characters, Mr. Buttons can respond dynamically to player prompts, marking a significant leap toward more immersive, interactive gameplay. That said, the experience isn't without flaws. To mask processing delays, the AI fills pauses with sounds like 'hmm' or 'umm'— a clever touch at first, but one that quickly becomes repetitive and slightly robotic. Still, the progress is hard to ignore. Take a look at the Mr. Buttons demo above.

Fortnite x Squid Game collab set to shake up creative mode with deadly challenges
Image via Fortnite Twitter Fortnite is taking its latest crossover into a darker, more competitive arena as it teams up with Netflix's global phenomenon Squid Game for a brand-new experience set to launch on June 27. Unlike previous high-profile collaborations, this one won't be part of the main Battle Royale mode, but will instead live within Fortnite's Creative universe - giving players the power to recreate, design, and survive the game's infamous challenges. Squid Game comes to creative mode Announced during the 2025 State of Unreal presentation, the collaboration introduces Squid Game assets to the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), enabling creators to build custom islands inspired by the show's brutal games. From 'Red Light, Green Light' to the iconic Glass Bridge, these fan-favorite tests of survival will now get the Epic Games stamp of approval, allowing for deeper immersion and greater authenticity. Over the past few years, community-made Squid Game maps - such as sundaycw's wildly popular 'Octo Game 2,' have gained traction among Creative players. However, these maps were based on fan interpretation. With official tools and show-accurate designs entering the mix, creators now have more firepower than ever to bring the twisted world of Squid Game to life inside Fortnite. What's also fuelling buzz is the speculation around whether the collaboration will remain limited to Creative mode. Fortnite's Competitive X account chimed in on the teaser post, sparking theories that the crossover could bleed into competitive tournaments or limited-time modes. Though nothing has been confirmed, the idea of players battling for V-Bucks - or even real money, in Squid Game-style events has fans intrigued. There's also curiosity around cosmetics. While Epic Games has yet to confirm the release of Squid Game-themed skins, many expect that Pink Guard outfits, contestant tracksuits, and themed emotes will soon hit the Item Shop - a familiar pattern following collaborations with franchises like The Walking Dead and Fall Guys. The crossover has already stirred mixed reactions online. While some fans hailed it as 'the most peak collab to date,' others called Squid Game 'overrated' or questioned Fortnite's recent creative direction. Still, with its official rollout just weeks away, the collaboration promises to offer players a gripping new way to engage with both franchises. Whether you're in it to survive, build, or simply collect cosmetics, Fortnite's dive into Squid Game territory marks a bold gamble - and one the community will be watching very closely.

State of Unreal 2025: Fortnite Unleashes Epic AI Idea, to let People Make AI NPCs
Following AI Darth Vader's introduction to Fortnite last month, Epic Games and Unreal have unveiled plans to continue the trend at the State of Unreal 2025. The power of the Dark Side landed in Fortnite last month, bringing the voice of AI James Earl Jones (with familial permissions) to Battle Royale. Darth Vader is powered by Google's Gemini 2.0 Flash model and ElevenLabs' Flash v2.5, and the late James Earl Jones' (who passed last September 2024 at the age of 93) voice can be heard in full. While the AI addition wasn't embraced by all fans, Darth Vader does indeed roam the map, sing to players and even narrate what's happening in-game. It seems AI Darth Vader was just the beginning. At the State of Unreal 2025 presentation, Epic Games unveiled a much bigger initiative—plans to release tools that allow creators to build their own AI-powered NPCs within Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). Demonstrated live on the Unreal main stage, Epic revealed that creators will soon be able to craft responsive AI characters using a new feature called the Persona Device. With the Persona Device, creators can design characters that players can actually converse with, customizing voice style, tone and personality traits. 'We're taking what we learned from Darth Vader and sharing the underlying technology with the creator community,' Epic said during the presentation. To showcase the tech, Epic introduced an NPC named Mr. Buttons, who delivered sassy, real-time dialogue as programmed, highlighting the potential of this new toolset. Alongside the Persona Device, Epic also announced a wave of new IP assets for its popular level creation tool. Squid Game content will arrive in Fortnite on June 27 to coincide with the premiere of season three. In addition, creators can look forward to using features, templates and assets from Avatar: The Last Airbender when they drop in UEFN next year. Fortnite LEGO is also expanding, as revealed during the State of Unreal 2025 presentation. A new LEGO Brick Editor is set to launch on June 17, introducing 50 classic brick types in 42 different colours. The update will allow players to build new islands, brick by brick. The State of Unreal 2025 presentation can be watched on the official Unreal YouTube channel, including a brand new tech demo trailer for The Witcher 4.

Fortnite is about to unleash AI-powered NPCs
For better or worse, Fortnite will let creators make NPCs that ditch the script and go freestyle. A new tool in the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) will allow developers to create their own generative AI-powered NPCs. Their voice types, delivery styles and personality traits are all customizable. Epic demoed the tech on Tuesday during its "State of Unreal" keynote. The company said the NPC generated its responses in real-time during the presentation. It was created using "about 20 lines" of prompt text. The demoed character, Mr. Buttons, was created solely to persuade the player to press a large red button in a room. After the presenter asked about the signs in the environment warning against pressing the button, the AI bot persisted. "Signs, you say? Mere suggestions from those who lack imagination. After all, rules are made to be gently nudged aside. Wouldn't you agree?" Impressive as it was, the demo also showed the tech's current limitations. First, it's a turn-taking AI chat, not a live one with interruptions and overlapping. In addition, the presenter could only speak when holding a button to activate the microphone. After each question, Mr. Buttons would pause for a few moments to process. It tried to mask this with vocal fillers like "Hmmm," "Ahhhh," and "Ummm." The tech builds on Darth Vader's appearance last month in Fortnite: Galactic Battle . Gemini 2.0 Flash generated the Sith Lord's dialogue, which was made to sound like James Earl Jones' voice using ElevenLabs AI tech. (His estate approved it.) How did it go? Well, AI Vader went viral for… probably not the reasons Epic hoped. On the bright side, it didn't quite devolve into AI Seinfeld levels of offensiveness. But a widely shared video showed Darth dropping an F-bomb. In response to a streamer using "freaking" and "fucking" in a voice prompt, Vader repeated the words. (Ironically, he then scolded the player for using harsh language.) Epic pushed a hotfix and promised it wouldn't happen again. Fortnite creators will be able to make the NPCs in the UEFN Editor later this year. You can check out the Mr. Buttons demo below. To view this content, you'll need to update your privacy settings.
