UFL RB Jacob Saylors signs with Detroit Lions; team cuts rookie TE

The Detroit Lions made a minor roster move ahead of their preseason opener against the Los Angeles Chargers, signing running back Jacob Saylors and waiving tight end Luke Deal with an injury designation. Deal, a blocking tight end out of Auburn, signed with the Lions as a tryout player out of rookie minicamp. Saylors has spent time with the Atlanta Falcons, New York Giants and Cleveland Browns but never appeared in an NFL game. He played in the UFL this spring and led the St. Louis Battlehawks with 499 yards rushing and five touchdowns. Undrafted rookie running back Kyle Robichaux left practice Monday with what appeared to be a shoulder injury and Lions coach Dan Campbell indicated he does not plan to play any key players in Thursday's Hall of Fame preseason game against the Chargers. Dave Birkett will appear at the Buy Michigan Now author showcase from 3-8 p.m. Aug. 2 in downtown South Lyon with his book, "Detroit Lions: An Illustrated Timeline." Arizona Cardinals to sign former UFL CB Keni-H Lovely

Arizona is adding another former UFL player to the roster The Arizona Cardinals, after placing cornerbacks Star Thomas V and Jaden Davis on injured reserve over the weekend, had two roster vacancies. One was filled when they announced the signing for cornerback Steven Gilmore, the younger brother of five-time Pro Bowl cornerback and one-time Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore. The other vacancy has been filled by a player who played recently in the UFL. The Cardinals announced the signing of cornerback Keni-H Lovely. Playing for the Michigan Panthers this past spring in the UFL, he had 26 total tackles, four pass breakups and an interception he returned for a touchdown in nine games. He is 5-10 and 182 pounds. Browns RB Jerome Ford returns to practice after missing first week of training camp

As the Cleveland Browns enter their second week of training camp, they got running back Jerome Ford back on the field. Ford, now a fourth-year running back, missed the first week with a hamstring injury. He remained limited in his return to the practice field. This left the Browns short-handed at running back as they continue to work through the legal situation of second round pick Quinshon Judkins as well. This led to the team signing UFL running back Toa Taua to fill out their running back room. With Ford out, it was fourth round pick Dylan Sampson who got the bulk of the first-team reps for the Browns. Overhauling the running back room, Sampson starts on a level playing field with the other backs in the room. Even with Ford returning to practice, the former SEC Offensive Player of the Year and Tennessee star, Sampson, has a chance to steal the opportunity in front of him. This could be Ford's last chance to make an impact with the Browns after two lackluster seasons with the lion's share of carries in his possession. Ford restructured his contract this offseason to take a pay cut with more guaranteed money upfront to retain his roster spot. It's now or never for the former Cincinnati Bearcat.

Detroot Lions announce CB signing to 90-man roster

The Detroit Lions announced the signing of a new cornerback on Monday morning following the release of Stantley Thomas-Oliver. The Lions added former UFL and Washington Commanders corner Nick Whiteside to their 90-man roster as the team enters the dog days of training camp. Whiteside joins a crowded CB room with a chance to make an impact on what has been a key position for Detroit's defense over the last few seasons. Thomas-Oliver was waived following an injury before the second week of camp. Whiteside is an Auburn Hills native who went on to play at Saginaw Valley State from 2018 to 2022. He was picked first-team All-GLIAC in 2021 and named the conference's Defensive Back of the Year. After a series of injuries to end his college career, Whiteside was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Commanders in 2023 and landed on their practice squad. He appeared in one game before being released ahead of the 2024 season. He last played for the UFL's St. Louis Battlehawks in 2025, totaling 16 tackles and a fumble recovery in 10 regular season games.
