Mexican president urges high voter turnout in judicial election

Mexico City, June 1(UNI) Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Saturday urged citizens to participate in Sunday's judicial election, the first time the public will directly select members of the federal judiciary. Sheinbaum hailed the vote as a "historic day" for Mexico, depicting it as a step toward building a "fair, people-centered judiciary" whose legitimacy stems from the will of the people. "For the first time, we will all decide who we want as justices of the Supreme Court," Sheinbaum said. "This is the great transformation our country is experiencing." Sheinbaum dismissed accusations that the vote could lead to executive overreach or partisan control. "Those who want to preserve a system of corruption and privilege claim the election is rigged. That is completely false," she said. UNI XINHUA ARN

Israel warns Hamas to accept U.S. envoy's Gaza ceasefire deal "or be destroyed"

Jerusalem, May 31 (UNI) Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz on Friday warned Hamas to accept the Gaza ceasefire deal proposed by U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, "or be destroyed." Witkoff's proposal includes the release of 10 living Israeli hostages and 18 bodies in two phases in exchange for a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza as well as the release by Israel of 1,236 Palestinian detainees and prisoners, along with the bodies of 180 Palestinians, according to media reports. In a statement issued by his office, Katz said the Israeli military continued its operations in Gaza with full force, carrying out attacks by air, land, and sea on an unprecedented scale "for maximum protection of our soldiers in preparation for the entry of the manoeuvring forces in each area." In a statement issued on Friday, the Israeli military said that since Thursday, its air force, alongside ground forces, had struck dozens of targets across the Gaza Strip, which "eliminated terrorists, dismantled weapons, and dismantled terrorist and underground infrastructure sites." It added that during the military operations, two rocket-propelled grenades were fired at Israeli troops, lightly wounding three soldiers. Of the 251 hostages seized during the October 2023 Hamas attack, 57 remain in Gaza, of whom 34 are believed to be dead, according to the Israeli military. UNI XINHUA ARN

Mexico demands explanation on U.S. deal with Mexican drug trafficker

Mexico City, May 30 (UNI) Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Thursday questioned the U.S. government for striking plea deals with Damaso Lopez Serrano, a member of a cartel the United States itself has labelled as "Foreign Terrorist Organisation." At a daily morning press conference, Sheinbaum spoke of the apparent contradiction and demanded an explanation. "The United States government recently issued a decree calling some organised crime organisations terrorists. They have said on several occasions that they do not negotiate with these organisations," she said. "They need to explain why agreements are reached in these cases." U.S. authorities has reached a plea agreement with Damaso Lopez Serrano, alias "El Mini Lic," who pleaded guilty in a U.S. court to drug trafficking charges. He is considered a former high-ranking figure within the Sinaloa Cartel, according to Mexican media. In February, the United States has designated Sinaloa Cartel, along with several other international cartels and transnational organisations, as "Foreign Terrorist Organisations" and "Specially Designated Global Terrorists." Lopez Serrano was arrested in 2017 on charges of trafficking cocaine, methamphetamine and heroin. He was arrested again last year, pleading guilty to new drug trafficking-related charges. Yemen's Houthis claim fresh attack against Israel

Sanaa, May 30 (UNI) Yemen's Houthi group took responsibility Thursday night for launching a fresh "hypersonic ballistic missile" attack against central Israel, saying it was aimed at Ben Gurion Airport. "We carried out a military operation targeting Ben Gurion Airport in central Israel, using a hypersonic ballistic missile," Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sarea said in a statement, aired by Houthi-run al-Masirah TV. Sarea said the group would continue its attacks "until the Israeli aggression on Gaza stops and the blockade is lifted." "We will continue to ban Israeli air traffic to and from Ben Gurion Airport," the Houthi military spokesperson added. Meanwhile, the Israeli military said in a statement that it intercepted a missile fired by Houthi forces in Yemen towards central Israel. On Wednesday, the Israeli air forces launched airstrikes on the Sanaa airport in the Houthi-held capital Sanaa, destroying the runway, facilities, and the last passenger plane in the airport. The Houthi group, which controls much of northern Yemen, has been targeting Israel since November 2023 to show solidarity with Palestinians amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza.
