UP man poses as gangster Lawrence Bishnoi to extort Rs 1 crore from Bengaluru businessman, arrested with 3 others
Four people, including three rowdy-sheeters from Uttar Pradesh, have been arrested in Bengaluru over an extortion call in which a caller falsely claimed to be notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, the police said on Tuesday. The arrested accused are Mohammad Rafiq from Mavalli in Bengaluru, and UP natives Shishupal Singh alias Monty, Vansh Sachdev, and Amit Chaudhary, Commissioner of Police Seemant Kumar Singh said. Police investigations confirmed that none of the three had any connection to Lawrence Bishnoi, who is infamous for issuing death threats to actor Salman Khan and allegedly orchestrating the murders of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala and Maharashtra politician Baba Siddique. On July 9, a Bengaluru-based businessman allegedly received a phone call where the impersonator demanded Rs 1 crore and threatened to kidnap his son if the ransom wasn't paid. He immediately contacted the police and filed a complaint. Special teams were formed and upon getting the technical details, the team initially arrested Rafiq. Through detailed call record analysis and technical investigations, officers tracked down the other three suspects to Delhi. They were brought to Bengaluru on transit warrants. The police revealed that Rafiq had a previous business relationship with the complainant involving unresolved financial matters from several years ago. However, the immediate motive was Rafiq's debt of approximately Rs 2 crore, which prompted his desperate search for money, they added. The conspiracy was hatched when Rafiq travelled to Delhi for court proceedings related to a previous case. There, he encountered Amit through advocates. After sharing his predicament, Amit offered a solution, claiming knowledge of individuals experienced in kidnapping and extortion operations, according to the police. The group of four met regularly and during one evening while drinking at Amit's lodge, they conceived the plan to impersonate Lawrence Bishnoi, according to the police. This decision was influenced by social media videos and reels about the gangster that they had watched online. Rafiq allegedly provided logistical support for his UP-based accomplices who made the extortion call. Investigations have uncovered that the suspects brought a countrymade pistol from Uttar Pradesh and the police are yet to recover it.

ATS arrests CRC teacher, eight others in fake arms licence case
Ahmedabad: The Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) arrested nine persons, including a Cluster Resource Coordinator (CRC) working with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's (AMC) school board, in connection with a fake gun licence racket. Between 2019 and 2022, the accused allegedly obtained bogus firearm licences issued from Uttar Pradesh's Etah district, falsely claiming to be residents there. ATS detained Shyam Singh Thakur (49), a resident of Aradhna Park Society in Ghodasar and posted in Vatva ward, from Maninagar East on Friday along with eight others. Thakur, an AMC school board staffer, is believed to have acted as a middleman to help people get illegal licences and weapons. Despite his arrest, the school board has not taken any official action against him so far, sources said. According to ATS officials, seven country-made firearms, 285 cartridges, and forged licences were recovered from the accused — Mukesh Singh Chauhan, Abhishek Trivedi, Vedprakash Singh, Rajendra Singh Sankhla, Ajay Sengar, Vijay Sengar, and Sholey Singh Sengar — all residents of Ahmedabad. "The accused never stayed or operated businesses at the addresses mentioned in the licence applications. They neither appeared before the Etah magistrate for verification nor signed any gun house registers," an ATS release stated. Two alleged middlemen — Thakur and his associate Himmat Singh Rajput — were under ATS custody for nearly a week. Investigations are still ongoing, and more arrests are likely. ATS DySP S L Chaudhary declined to comment on the matter. In a similar case last year, ATS exposed a larger racket where 66 people were booked for procuring fake licences, with a man named Vishal Pandya from Vastral believed to be the mastermind. MLA, brother on ATS radar Sources in the state home department revealed that an MLA and his brother, a prominent builder in the city, allegedly tried to influence the case by securing the release of Shyam Singh Thakur. The name of a police officer, now posted in Ahmedabad rural but who previously served in the city's eastern zone, has also surfaced for his closeness to Vishal Pandya, the suspected kingpin of a similar racket in Nagaland. ATS may question the officer over his links with the builder, who reportedly tried to intervene to shield Thakur from arrest.

According to experts, with the right choices, traditional Indian food can be both tasty and great for your heart. Dr Jivitesh Satija, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Heritage Institute of Medical Sciences in Bhadawar, UP, and Max Super Speciality Hospital, Noida, recently shared a heart-friendly desi die t on Instagram that's flavourful, simple to follow, and sustainable in the long run. And no, it doesn't involve imported superfoods, boring salads or bland oats. What's the 5-step desi fix for a healthier heart? Dr Jivitesh outlined five simple yet powerful changes that are easy to follow and sustain: Less refined carbs, sugar, and outside food More fibre-rich, protein-packed, gut-friendly foods Good fat—not zero fat Anti-inflammatory herbs, nuts, seeds, and seasonal fruits Fix hidden nutrient gaps like vitamin B12 and omega-3 Can switching grains improve your heart health? According to Dr Jivitesh, ditching refined grains like maida and excess white rice can go a long way. He recommends incorporating whole wheat, bajra, jowar, brown rice, oats and quinoa. Are most Indians getting enough daily protein? Most young Indians don't. But protein is essential for muscle strength, better metabolism, and sustained energy—especially for desk-bound professionals. Because heart disease is hitting Indians earlier than ever. Citing a Lancet Global Health report, Dr Satija said that Indians develop heart issues 10–15 years earlier than people in Western countries. Even more worrying? One in four heart attack patients in India is under 40. 'More sugar, more fried and processed foods, and a serious lack of fibre, protein, omega-3s, and vitamin B12 are causing the rise in heart problems in the country,' said Dr Jivitesh.

MCD agent, Delhi hosp technician among 5 arrested in Rs 500 crore insurance scam
Meerut: Five people, including a woman, were arrested on Saturday for allegedly forging medical and civic records to fraudulently claim insurance payouts by falsely declaring already deceased individuals as recently dead. The arrests are the latest development in the Rs 500 crore insurance scam that has spanned over seven years and involved multiple states. The arrested include Prem Pal, an agent linked to Delhi MCD; Nawaz Ahmed, a technician from GB Pant Hospital, Delhi; Kalpana Singh, a CSB Bank employee; Ravinder Gupta, an insurance claim investigator; and Virender Kumar, a former guard and aspiring cricketer. The scam, first reported by TOI, has unravelled a network of fraud that spans multiple states and involves forged documents, insider collusion, and insurance manipulation. In one instance, the gang secured Rs 70 lakh through three fraudulent policies for Trilok Kumar, a Delhi man who died of cancer in June 2024. After convincing Kumar's widow, Sapna, with promises of financial help, the gang procured his ID documents and purchased three policies in Sept 2024. They later submitted forged ECG reports, fake doctor seals, and a fabricated second death certificate claiming Kumar died of a heart attack at GB Pant Hospital in Dec 2024. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? How to get Internet without paying a subscription? Techno Mag Learn More Undo Prem Pal, leveraging his MCD links, allegedly created a fake certificate for Rs 5,000. Nawaz Ahmed, a hospital orderly, forged medical files and stole documents for Rs 17,000 in bribes. He and others inserted the fake file into hospital records. Sambhal ASP Anukriti Sharma said, "They faked ECGs, signatures and the death record to match the insurance date. It was a complete fabrication. They even forged doctors' signatures and official seals." HDFC Life assigned Ravindra Gupta to investigate the claim of one of the policies. Persuaded by alleged kingpin Shahrukh Khan, Gupta filed a false report, leading to Rs 20 lakh being credited to Sapna's account. Police had seized her debit card and cheque book during Shahrukh's arrest in Feb, so the funds remained untouched. Other claims were cancelled once the fraud was detected. The scam was first uncovered on Jan 17, when Sambhal police intercepted a vehicle with Rs 11 lakh, 19 debit cards, and numerous documents. Six more were arrested by Feb 15 — including Shahrukh, Hirender Kumar, Roop Kishor, Prem Pal, Prem Singh and ASHA worker Neelam Devi. Seized items included 81 passbooks, 31 fake death certificates, and 18 forged bank stamps. The scam preyed on the poor and the sick, with some cases involving murder disguised as accidents to claim insurance. The wider UP-based insurance racket emerged as a large-scale fraud involving forged medical records, fake death certificates, and inflated insurance claims — sometimes linked to murders staged as accidents. It began surfacing in 2024 in Sambhal and has since spread to at least 12 states, including Delhi, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. Initial investigations had estimated the scam's value at over Rs 100 crore, but fresh revelations, including the Trilok case, pushed the suspected fraud total higher. Enforcement Directorate is now probing links to multiple deaths and fraudulent claims, many targeting terminally ill patients or those already dead. Trilok's case was uncovered from documents seized in Feb. The gang had already taken control of Sapna's phone number, passbooks and chequebook. Police said Virender Kumar, once a guard, began helping patients get appointments, which connected him to Nawaz. After meeting Shahrukh in 2022, Virender became a full-time member, approaching bereaved families and offering false promises of aid. During Kumar's illness in early June 2024, his family had tried to admit him to GB Pant Hospital but were redirected. He later died, and Virender approached his widow. "We found out he had died, and that's when the gang reached out to his wife," said an officer. Kalpana, working as a business development officer, opened fake accounts using a lookalike of co-accused Hirender Kumar. She also tried to rope in Sapna with false insurance promises and received expensive gifts from Shahrukh to help meet her targets.
