Best friend of crash victim says loss is 'space in life that will never be filled'

Best friend of crash victim says loss is 'space in life that will never be filled' Ethan Powell, 20, was found on the A465 between Rhymney and Dowlais next to an overturned quadbike in the early hours of Saturday, May 31 Dozens of people remembered Ethan Powell at a balloon release on Sunday (Image: Mark Lewis ) The best friend of a young man who died in a collision on the A465 has opened up over the moment he "broke down" as he learnt the tragic news, describing how the loss is a "space in his life that will never be filled". Ethan Powell was found on the A465 between Rhymney and Dowlais next to an overturned quadbike in the early hours of Saturday, May 31. The 20-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have arrested five people as part of their investigation into the crash, one of whom has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Jake Williams was Ethan's best friend. Since his tragic passing he and his friend Kyron, who was also very close to Ethan, have begun organised events and fundraisers to remember him and to raise money for his family. On Wednesday there was a balloon release in his memory in Crickhowell and on Sunday another one was held at Welfare Park in Brynmawr. As the balloons were released on Sunday there was a particularly touching moment as Pretty Green Eyes by Ultrabeat, which was Ethan's favourite song, was played. Describing the moment he found out what had happened to his friend Jake said: "Me and his other best friend, Kyron, it was always us three together. Ethan's dad called me and Kyron because we were actually out at the time looking for him. He told us what had happened and I just broke down. I was in bits. "I have been literally speechless over the last couple of days and it kind of hit me at one point then and it has stuck with me that he has gone. Article continues below "I am really struggling with it. I have been out until late at night with Kyron just talking about random stuff to keep it off our minds. "Ethan was family to me. He was like another brother. I don't think that space in my life will ever be filled. Every day I'd come home from work he would ring me. He'd ring me in the morning, ring me at night." Ethan Powell died in a collision on the A465 Heads of the Valleys road on Saturday, May 31 (Image: Gwent Police ) Jake, aged 20, described his friend's personality, and told the story of how the pair first met. He said: "Ethan was an overall character – everything he did made everyone laugh. We met through college in Ebbw Vale. "We were on different courses – he did bricklaying and I did carpentry. "He was playing football outside and I came over and he said: 'Come and have a kickabout'. We had a game of football outside the college and before we knew it we became best buddies. "We used to play football together regularly at the welfare with all the boys. We used to go out in the cars and park up and talk about random stuff and we used to go out in Brynmawr on the weekends after rugby. He played rugby and football. "I'll always remember him first driving my car – that was a funny memory. He was having driving lessons and I let him have a go of driving my car up the industrial and all he did was stall. "He was a spontaneous person. He would make decisions in his head and he'd just go with it – it could be 10pm at night and he'd want to go to Porthcawl. We always had a good laugh together. He'd always be smiling, always laughing. He was cheeky as well. "He absolutely adored his family, his little sister and his mum and dad. He was a very, very, very good person and a talented footballer as well. Football was his main passion, a bit of rugby, he loved his tattoos. He loved his music, hard style, drum and bass, techno." The balloon release was a poignant sight (Image: Mark Lewis ) Jake said that he and Kyron are now focusing on doing what they can to keep their friend's memory alive with the phrase 'Forever 20' a central part of their efforts in memory of Ethan. He said: "We've got the balloon releases and I am selling stickers as well for cars to raise money. At the moment we're looking to organise a charity football match too to raise money for Ethan's family. We'd like to do that every year but we have to get it off the ground at the moment. We've got boys ready – it's just about sorting a referee and things like that." Gwent Police has issued an appeal in their murder investigation into the crash. Officers found a burnt-out BMW in the Dowlais area during the investigation, which they believe may have been involved in the collision. ‌ They asked anyone who may have information on this car to contact them. Police are also urging anyone who was travelling along the A465 between the hours of 2am and 5am on May 31 to check their dashcams. A spokesman for Gwent Police said: "Officers investigating a fatal road traffic collision on the A465 westbound between Rhymney and Dowlais on Saturday, May 31, are continuing their appeal for information. "A Brynmawr man, 20, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene at around 4.50am after his quadbike was found overturned on the westbound carriageway. His family are aware and continue to receive support from specially-trained officers. ‌ "A Merthyr man, 40, was arrested on suspicion of murder and driving whilst unfit through drink and driving whilst unfit through drugs. A second man, 37 and from Merthyr also, was arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and assisting an offender. Both were later released on conditional bail as inquiries continue." Detective chief inspector for Gwent Police, Matthew Edwards, the senior investigating officer, said: "We're keen to speak to anyone who was travelling along the A465 between the hours of 2am and 5am on Saturday morning, especially motorists with dashcam, as they could have details that might assist our inquiries. "It is still our view that a second vehicle – a white BMW that was found burnt out in the Dowlais area – may have been involved in the collision. If you have any information about this car then please get in touch." Article continues below "Anyone with information that could assist our investigation is asked to call 101, contact us via our website, or send us a direct message on social media quoting log reference 2500171434. You can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously with information by calling 0800 555 111 or going to their website to report online in confidence." A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Ethan's family and has so far raised more than £1,700. If you wish to make a donation you can do so by clicking here.

Man City star Phil Foden thrown 'surprise' birthday party - complete with live gig from The Voice star, fishing themed cake and a DJ

Manchester City star Phil Foden moved to the Cheshire countryside for the quiet life and to enjoy his love of fishing. But his family upped the volume when they threw a 'surprise' early birthday party at his five-bedroom lakeside mansion, featuring dance act Ultra Beat and singer Holly Ellison, who was once a finalist on The Voice. Ms Ellison, who appeared on the ITV talent series in 2018, posted: 'What a night performing for @philfoden birthday celebrations! Incredible energy, amazing people & a night to remember thank you for having me.' There was also a set by Manchester-based house music DJ Lewis Barlow, 'official DJ' for the Blues, who said it had been a 'full garden takeover'. Ultrabeat had a number two chart hit in 2003, with a cover of Pretty Green Eyes. As well as the music, there was a nod to the footballer's pastime- with 'Foden bait shop' stall filled with sweet treats, and a fish themed cake. Entertainment also included a 'bucking bronco' and son Ronnie, six, even performed on a drum kit. A post on Ronnie's Instagram page – followed by four million people – said: 'The best night ever for my dad's surprise fishing themed birthday party Thank you to everyone who came and made it such a special night.' The celebrations came days after heartbreak for Foden, who turns 25 on Wednesday and his teammates after they lost 1-0 to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup Final at Wembley. City, currently third, travel to face Fulham at Craven Cottage today in their final league game of what has been a disappointing season – by their recent standards. Posts on TikTok and Instagram show several dozen people, believed to be family members, partying in the garden of the £1m country home. Foden - who was in dressed-down attire for the party, wearing a black tracksuit and silver chain - and his family previously faced complaints from neighbours over loud parties at their former address in Prestbury. The party came a week after Foden stepped out with his long-term girlfriend Rebecca Cooke for City great Kevin De Bruyne's leaving party in Manchester. Dressed in all-black for that occasion, Rebecca picked a plunging, sleeveless jumpsuit that showed off her cleavage, toned midriff and golden tan, as Rebecca also wore a big smile while posing for pictures with her footballer boyfriend. Their most recent appearance came after the couple sparked engagement rumours when Rebecca was spotted wearing a large diamond ring on her ring finger in February. At the time, it was reported that the Premier League star whisked Rebecca away on a romantic trip to Paris for New Year's Eve, where he reportedly proposed. Twelve months ago, Phil Foden was on top of the world, scooping the Premier League Player of the Year award having just fired his Manchester City side to a fourth consecutive league title. The then-23-year-old had scored a brace against West Ham on the final day - sticking one in the top corner from 35 yards out - and the world was finally his oyster. The Euros with England. Hopes of another Treble. The rest. Except it didn't work out that way. Foden started every game for England but struggled out in Germany. He would have a slow start to the season with City and endure a campaign light years away from his last. It was all, simply, going wrong. Earlier this season, Foden blamed 'mental fatigue' for his poor form. 'I just need a few weeks off it without playing football and obviously I can't get it at the moment,' he said. Now Foden has been left out Thomas Tuchel's second England squad on the back of fatigue and an ankle injury and will be able to enjoy some time off before the Club World Cup with City next month. That could mean more time at home with his family. Still only 24, Foden has three children with Ms Cooke - son Ronnie, born in 2019, a daughter born in 2021 and another child born during Euro 2024. Last month, Foden's old home - where neighbours include Slade singer Noddy Holder, TV antiques expert David Dickinson as well as his former Manchester City team-mate Kyle Walker's family – was put on the market for £3.25m. The sprawling four-bed modern home features its own gym, bar, hot tub and extensive gardens with a swing and a trampoline. The detached home, which is down a private road with an electric security gate, also boasts a ground-floor leisure suite. One of Foden's former neighbours said: 'They are a lovely family and Phil and Rebecca seem devoted parents. 'I saw them take Ronnie out on a bike he'd been given for Christmas and they seemed just like a young family having fun. 'He moved out a while ago now but has finally put in on the market.' A raucous late-night party at Foden's house in August last year, led to police being called. One neighbour said it was 'louder than Glastonbury' with booming gangster rap music. Another dialled 999 over the blaring music after complaints it was so loud it was 'like being in a nightclub'. Cheshire Police confirmed they were contacted over a noise complaint but officers did not go to the house. Neighbours said the kids party started around 4pm and went on until nearly midnight. Snoop Dog's 'Drop It Like It's Hot' and a Queen Latifah hit were heard being blasted from a PA system, as kids screamed and Foden's Doberman guard dog barked. In March 2022 the England player also sparked noise complaints after having a Mother's Day 'music festival' at home, where he blasted out Whitney Houston hits. At the time, it was claimed by neighbours that 'things got out of hand'. The Premier League winner's next door neighbour for more than two years was his City team-mate Kyle Walker. However Walker was thrown out by his WAG Annie Kilner after it was revealed he had fathered a second child with his former mistress Lauryn Goodman. Walker now plays for AC Milan in Italy. Foden bought his parents a house just half a mile away in the same village but that is now also on the market. His mother has made the decision to move house just a week after she was on the receiving end of disgusting abuse from Manchester United fans. Claire Rowlands, 45, became the subject of appalling chants from Red Devils supporters during a recent drab 0-0 Manchester derby at Old Trafford. The England midfielder was targeted by sections of the home support who abhorrently labelled his mum a 's**g' before his substitution in the 58th minute. Foden and Rebecca welcomed their first child Ronnie in 2019, followed by their daughter True in 2021. In an interview with Manchester City, Foden spoke about being there for the birth of Ronnie, saying: 'I was there for the birth. I walked out of the room, gave it a little tear and then went back in like nothing happened'. He briefly left the England camp during Euro 2024 in Germany, to fly home for the birth of his third child. Foden is the youngest player to win six league titles, helping Manchester City secure their fourth consecutive Premier League last season. The lifelong City fan has also won the Champions League after his side beat Inter Milan 1-0 in 2023.
