Burning candle caused Durban fire

He said officials met the grieving families of Mbango and Zulu. It has been reported the woman was looking after her friend's son, Zulu, but was locked in the shack at the time of the fire. 'At this stage our focus is to ensure extended families in Mount Frere and Umzimkhulu are properly informed about the tragedy. Sadly, Ms Nonhle Mbango buried her father weeks ago.' He said residents at the settlement were always affected by fires and natural disasters such as floods. 'Critically, we remain worried about the fact that residents who originally lived there were relocated to the newly built houses in Waterloo and double-storey homes just across Kennedy Road. 'In our meeting with the minister last week with eThekwini mayor Cyril Xaba we agreed on the need to enforce the bylaws. This will help to prevent people from reoccupying or renting shacks. 'Notwithstanding these issues, we understand that people are moving to eThekwini and other secondary cities in search of socioeconomic opportunities,' Duma said. TimesLIVE

South Africa: Justice Committee Chairperson Says Justice Prevails in Sindiso Magaqa Murder Case

The Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development, Mr Xola Nqola, welcomed the sentence of long-term imprisonment for the man who was found guilty of murdering ANCYL secretary-general Mr Sindiso Magaqa, a former ANC Youth League Secretary-General and dedicated public servant. Mr Nqola said the conviction and the 25-year sentence mark a significant moment for the rule of law in South Africa and reinforces our collective belief that justice must be served — regardless of time, influence or status. Mr Ncengwa admitted that he was one of a group of men who were paid R120 000 to kill Mr Magaqa in 2017. Mr Ncengwa also implicated in the crime former city manager of the Umzimkhulu municipality Mr Zweliphansi Skhosana; the ex-mayor, Mr Mluleki Ndobe, who has since passed on, and former journalist and eThekwini municipality communications manager Mr Mdu Ncalane. Mr Magaqa was a passionate advocate for youth empowerment and integrity in public service. His untimely death was not only a loss to his family and community but to the nation. Mr Nqola said the committee commends the investigative and prosecutorial teams for their persistence in pursuing this complex case and hopes that this outcome brings some measure of closure to Mr Magaqa's loved ones. 'We urge continued support for law enforcement and the judiciary in their efforts to address politically motivated crimes and protect all who serve the public. South Africa's democracy depends on the assurance that no one is above the law,' Mr Nqola said. Distributed by APO Group on behalf of Republic of South Africa: The Parliament.

Hawks on hunt for 2 people of interest in KZN cop killing

The Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal are searching for two people of interest in connection with the murder of police officer Sergeant Ntombi Mbanjwa. Mbanjwa, 33, was shot and killed at her home in Umzimkhulu last April. Her fiancé, Sergeant Ntokozo Mngqithi, and Bhungane Hadebe are currently behind bars in connection with her murder. Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo said Sanele Mthembu and Xolani Ngobese/Ndlovu are believed to have critical information that could aid in solving the case. 'Sanele Mthembu was last seen in the Dambuza area in Pietermaritzburg, where he was running a tuckshop. He is originally from Bulwer,' Mhlongo added. 'Xolani Ngobese/Ndlovu was last seen in Edendale, Pietermaritzburg. He used to reside in the Capital City Housing NPC flats and was self-employed as an Uber driver.' Anyone with information about their whereabouts is asked to contact Warrant Officer Sipho Mnguni on 082 556 9559. Mngqithi is facing an additional charge of corruption and defeating the ends of justice, relating to a separate case where he allegedly demanded a R60 000 bribe to quash a culpable homicide docket. He was investigating a case in which a truck collided with a light motor vehicle, killing seven passengers in November 2022.
