Cashless transactions in LRT, MRT to start in July —DOTr

Passengers can use debit cards, credit cards, and e-wallets to pay the fare in Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Metro Rail Transit (MRT) starting July, eliminating long lines at train stations, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said. Instead of buying and reloading Beep cards or stored-value smart cards used in LRT and MRT, passengers can simply tap their phones or cards at the turnstile upon their entry to the railway platform. DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon said the department will start deploying cashless turnstiles for the automatic fare collection (AFC) system next month. 'Mga bandang July ito, if I'm not mistaken. (This will be around July, if I'm not mistaken. We will implement it on the MRT and on our other trains. I know that credit cards can also be used. Just tap your phone. You don't need to buy a Beep card.) 'Nagtaka nga ako bakit hindi ito kaagad na-implement, 'yun naman pala kaya i-implement kaagad-agad itong cashless options sa MRT,' he added. (I was wondering why it wasn't implemented right away, the cashless options on the MRT can be implemented right away actually.) President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. earlier ordered the DOTr to develop an open-loop payment system that is integrated with multiple financial platforms, Dizon said. According to a report of EJ Gomez on GMA Integrated News' Unang Balita on Tuesday, some passengers said the cashless transaction in LRT and MRT is good news for them. The passengers said the move will eradicate long lines, hassles, and health risks. —Joviland Rita/AOL, GMA Integrated News

Arnie Teves to be transferred to Bilibid —NBI

Former Negros Oriental representative Arnolfo 'Arnie' Teves Jr. is set to be transferred to a detention facility of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City on Friday morning, an official said. 'This morning po,' NBI Director James Santiago said in an interview on GMA Integrated News' Unang Balita when asked what time Teves will be transferred to Bilibid. Teves, the alleged mastermind in the killing of ex-Negros Oriental governor Roel Degamo, is currently being held at the NBI office in Manila. Santiago said Teves will be presented to the media at 10 a.m. before his transfer to Bilibid. 'Yung mga kasamahan natin sa media nagre-request sila ng interview so ihaharap ko sa kanila nang sandali. Tapos didiretso na sa Bureau of Corrections (BuCor),' Santiago said. (Our colleagues in the media are requesting an interview so I will present Teves to them for a moment. Then he will go straight to the Bureau of Corrections.) Santiago explained that Teves will be transferred to the BuCor facility because the NBI has no detention facility in its office in Manila. 'Pinahiram sa amin ang Building 14 kung saan lahat ng detainees ng NBI doon inilalagay pero distinct and separate sa BuCor,' he said. (We were lent Building 14 where all NBI detainees are held but it is distinct and separate from BuCor.) Teves is back in the Philippines after being deported by authorities in Timor-Leste where he sought asylum. The plane carrying Teves from Timor-Leste landed in Davao City at 7:40 p.m. on Thursday for a stopover. It landed at Villamor Air Base in Pasay City at past 11 p.m. Teves was brought to the NBI in Manila where he underwent booking procedure and medical examination. The former lawmaker was allegedly the mastermind in the killing of Degamo and nine others on March 4, 2023 in his residence in Pamplona. But Teves has denied the accusation.—AOL, GMA Integrated News

Arnie Teves arrested in Timor-Leste

Former Negros Oriental 3rd District Representative Arnolfo "Arnie" Teves Jr. was arrested in Timor-Leste where he sought asylum. Based on the Facebook post of Teves' son Axl early Wednesday, the former lawmaker was nabbed by immigration officers in Timor-Leste, Unang Balita reported. Allegedly, no warrant or any other document was shown prior to the arrest. Based on a report by local media Teves was nabbed and placed under the custody of Timor-Leste immigration police. Teves was allegedly the mastermind in the killing of former Negros Oriental governor Roel Degamo and nine others on March 4, 2023. The former lawmaker has denied the accusation. GMA News Online contacted the Department of Justice for comment but has yet to receive a reply as of posting time. GMA Integrated News also contacted the Bureau of Immigration for comment. Teves' lawyer Atty. Ferdinand Topacio told GMA Integrated News that Teves was taken by immigration police from his home in Dili. "At around 8 p.m. yesterday (Dili time), our client, Rep. Armolfo Teves, was taken from his residence in Dili together with his Timor Leste counsel, Dr. Joao Serra, by immigration police. The lawyer was manhandled by the said police," Topacio said. He said Teves and Serra have since been detained in the compound of the Ministry of the Interior. "No warrant or any written authority was shown to Mr. Teves and Dr. Serra as to the cause of detention," Topacio said. "We are held against our will. They are not letting me go," Teves said in a video posted by Axl on Facebook. —with a report from Joahna Lei Casilao/KG, GMA Integrated News

Manila mayor-elect Isko Moreno vows to address security, garbage woes

Manila mayor-elect Isko Moreno on Wednesday said he would prioritize addressing garbage problems and security concerns once he reassumes his former office in city hall. In a one-on-one interview with Arnold Clavio on GMA Integrated News' Unang Balita, Moreno said, "'Yung dalawang pangunahing hinihingi niyo sa akin, yung kalinisan, kaayusan, at kapanatagan ng pamumuhay sa Maynila, 'yun po una kong tutugunan." (I will address cleanliness and orderliness, and secure living in Manila. These are the two primary concerns that the people want me to focus on.) Moreno said he has been receiving a lot of complaints from constituents about garbage in the city. He said this became one of his campaign promises. "Ang basura, o sanidad for that matter, is an issue of all. Hindi 'yan issue ng mahirap, hindi 'yan issue ng middle class, hindi 'yan issue ng mayaman. Lahat ng tao, dahil walang pinipili ang sakit dulot ng tambak ng basura pagdating sa kapakanan ng taumbayan," he said. (Garbage, or sanitation for that matter, is an issue for all. It's not an issue of the poor, it's not an issue of the middle class, it's not an issue of the rich alone. It's everyone's concern because the diseases brought about by garbage do not choose their victims.) As for security, Moreno lamented that Manila is among the cities with the highest crime indexes in Southeast Asia. Citing incidents of holdup and snatching, Moreno said crimes happen even during "Broad daylight and so on and so forth. And one of the reasons bakit dumadaming ganyan kasi maraming gumagamit ngayon [ng droga]." (Broad daylight and so on and so forth. And one of the reasons why there are so many crimes is because the number of illegal drug users is rising.) "'Yung bisyo, kailangan tugunan nila. Kaya sabi ko, mga tolongges, palit na kayo ng address or magbago na kayo," he added. (They need to do something about vices. That's why I say to you troublemakers: Change your address or change your ways.) Meanwhile, Moreno vowed that he would complete his three terms as Manila mayor, dismissing the possibility that he would run again for president in the 2028 elections like he did in the 2022 polls. "I already committed to the people of Manila. We're gonna create a 10-year plan," Moreno said. "Actually, hindi naman masama tumakbo ng presidente. Sa mga manonood ngayon, may mga anak sila. Malamang nangangarap din silang maging presidente at makapaglingkod. It's just that it's destiny. The people have chosen already President Bongbong Marcos and we move on with our lives," he added. (Actually, it's not bad to run for president. To our viewers, they have children. They probably also dream of becoming president and serving the people. It's just that it's destiny. The people have already chosen President Bongbong Marcos and we move on with our lives.) — VDV, GMA Integrated News
