Lee Carsley signs new contract to stay England Under-21s head coach
Lee Carsley has signed a new contract to continue in his role as England Under-21 head coach. The new deal will take him through to the end of the 2027 European Under-21 Championship, the Football Association (FA) said, and comes on the eve of the 2025 tournament. England, defending champions from 2023, face Czechia, Slovenia and Germany in the group stage in Slovakia. Advertisement 'I'm delighted to extend my time with the FA,' Carsley said. 'It's a privilege to have the opportunity to work with a young, talented group and help develop them on the international stage. 'While the future is exciting, our immediate priority is this summer's UEFA Under-21 Euros in Slovakia as we attempt to emulate the achievement of Dave Sexton's teams in 1982 and 1984.' "An easy decision." ✅ Hear from Lee Carsley on his new deal at The @FA as he prepares to lead the #YoungLions at this month's #U21EURO finals. — England (@England) June 4, 2025 Carsley stepped up to take over the senior side last autumn following Gareth Southgate's exit as manager after Euro 2024. He took charge for six games, with England winning five them including away victories at the Republic of Ireland, Finland and Greece. Thomas Tuchel eventually took over the senior team with Carsley previously indicating he had not applied for the position on a permanent basis. Carsley began his coaching career with roles at Coventry City, Sheffield United, Brentford, Manchester City and Birmingham City before stepping into the national setup with the Under-20s side in 2020. He replaced Aidy Boothroyd at Under-21 level in 2021 and has earned widespread praise for both the results and the style of football he has implemented with the younger generation of players. Carsley made 340 top-flight appearances as a player and won 40 international caps for the Republic of Ireland, including playing at the 2002 World Cup. ()

'My future is FA' - Carsley signs deal until 2027
England Under-21 head coach Lee Carsley has signed a new contract with the Football Association to run until future was the subject of speculation during his six-match spell as interim head coach of the England senior team, which ended last November after he led the side to promotion back to the top tier of the Nations 51-year-old - previously on a 12-month rolling deal - has committed himself to the FA for another two years a week before England attempt to retain the European Under-21 title they won under his guidance in 2023, a feat they last achieved in 1982 and tournament takes place in Slovakia this month, with England's first game against the Czech Republic on 12 June."I've just signed an extension. I've got the Euros and then the next campaign. My future is definitely the FA," Carsley asked if the contract was going to be as U21 head coach or if there was the potential for a job elsewhere in the FA, Carsley replied: "I'll just see how it goes. I think it's important that I just do a good job."I am just trying to do it again [win the Euros]. The priority is the Euros and I won't be taking my eye off of that."The England U21 side is packed with exciting young talent such as Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri, Tottenham's Archie Gray and Liverpool's Harvey has not been all plain sailing for Carsley though, with striker Liam Delap near certain to miss the tournament despite being named in the training squad, as he moves close to completing a £30m move to are involved in the Club World Cup this summer in the United States and the Fifa tournament takes priority over the U21 Delap, Carsley could also lose Sunderland midfielder Jobe Bellingham to the Club World Cup, if he completes a move to Borussia Dennis Cirkin, Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton and Tottenham Hotspur's Dane Scarlett are all missing because of injuries, but Carsley says these setbacks are all part of the development."First and foremost we have to remember the age of the players. They still need a lot of support." said Carsley, whose team are in a group alongside Slovenia and Germany, as well as the Czechs."We have room within our schedule to make sure that they get a chance if they need to have a medical or they need to speak to a club. "Liam is one of two or three players who we are supporting with that at the moment."Ideally I want them here, of course I do. You want your strongest squad but we have to put the players first and that is definitely what we are doing."Carsley has challenged this year's squad to improve on what his 2023 champions did. That team won all six of their matches without conceding a goal."First and foremost we can definitely improve the way we played at times," he said."We spoke about having control, with the bigger picture of hopefully helping players go onto the senior team. I've got the benefit of seeing what potentially that looks like."Hopefully we'll be good to watch. That's what you want. You want people back home watching the next generation of England players and being excited by it."Carsley won five of his six games in charge of the England senior team, with his only defeat coming against Greece at he said he thinks that the experience of leading the senior team gave him "a lot of confidence" and will benefit the players he coaches that time Carsley gave senior debuts to a number of his class of 2023 and seven of that squad are in Thomas Tuchel's squad for Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Andorra and Tuesday's friendly with Senegal."I think that can be inspiring for this group," Carsley said. "From the last group that won the Euros, nine debuts in the senior team."What an incentive to win a tournament and have that progression and have that conveyor belt of players that are able to go through."

Lee Carsley extends contract as England Under-21 manager
The England Under-21 head coach Lee Carsley has signed a two-year contract extension on the eve of his team's European Championship defence. Carsley, 51, has led the under-21 side since 2021, when he replaced Aidy Boothroyd. He took charge of the senior team for six matches between Gareth Southgate's departure last summer and Thomas Tuchel's appointment. The head coach, who has committed to the FA until 2027, will spearhead England's defence of their Euros title in Slovakia. Their success two years ago, at the tournament in Georgia and Romania, was England's first since 1984. He will name his final squad for this summer's tournament on Friday morning. England play Czech Republic in their first match on June 12, followed by Slovenia three days later and Germany on June 18. Carsley, who is supported by assistant manager Ashley Cole, has won 24 of his 31 games in charge of the team (a 77.42 per cent win rate). He won five out of the six games he took charge of as manager of the senior team, but lost 2-1 to Greece at Wembley in the Nations League. In an interview with The Times in December, the former Everton and Ireland midfielder said he had no regrets over picking an ultra-attacking line-up against Greece that included Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Cole Palmer, Phil Foden and Anthony Gordon. He added that he was pleased to have demonstrated that he and his staff were capable of managing at an international level during the six matches. In his time leading the under-21 side Carsley has drawn plaudits for the attacking, expressive style his team has played with, and the innovative tactical tweaks he uses. In 2023, he deployed Gordon as a striker, after Folarin Balogun decided to represent the USA national team a month before the Euros began. Gordon won the player of the tournament award for his performances, and Carsley may need to show innovative thinking again with Liam Delap set to miss the Euros and instead go to the Club World Cup with Chelsea. Players such as Gordon, Palmer, Noni Madueke, Curtis Jones, Morgan Gibbs-White, Levi Colwill and James Trafford have successfully progressed from the under-21 side into the senior team since winning the Euros two years ago. In addition to his role as under-21 head coach, Carsley and his team support the senior side in preparing for major tournaments and scouting their opponents. He joined the England youth set-up in 2015, taking up roles as a specialist 'out-of-possession' coach and managing the under-20 team before being promoted to the under-21 side.
