England name 23-man squad for Under-21 Euros this month with Jobe Bellingham and James McAtee included - but Chelsea star left OUT

England are hoping to hang on to Jobe Bellingham this month after naming him in their 23-man squad for the Under-21 European Championships. As exclusively revealed by Mail Sport on Thursday, Lee Carsley is without Liam Delap as he joins up with Chelsea for the Club World Cup. And there were fears that Carsley would be missing Bellingham too as Borussia Dortmund, who are also in action at the Club World Cup, look to wrap up a move for the Sunderland midfielder. Sources at the German club are confident they have won the race for the £25million-rated teenager after he held talks with sporting director Sebastian Kehl in Ibiza last week. Mail Sport understands that there is still a chance Dortmund make their move in time to pull Bellingham out of the England squad for the Club World Cup, but for now he is set for a prominent role at the Euros. The 19-year-old only made his debut for England's Under-21s back in November but already looks to be a key piece of the puzzle for Carsley as England begin their title defence in Slovakia next week. No Delap has left a hole in attack with only one recognised centre forward, Birmingham City's Jay Stansfield, in the squad. Omari Hutchinson (Ipswich Town) and Jonathan Rowe (Marseille) offer potential false nine options if Carsley decides to shake things up. Jamie Gittens, who is being pursued by Chelsea this month, is one of a number of high-profile absentees that has decimated Carsley's options. Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite is not involved while Manchester City's Rico Lewis is also out. City midfielder James McAtee, who was part of the victorious Euros group in 2023, is in the squad. Adam Wharton, Jaden Philogene and Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who were all part of the last Under-21s camp, are all also absent. England's title defence gets underway next Wednesday when they take on Czech Republic. All of the Young Lions' games will be broadcast on Channel 4 in the UK. ENGLAND U21 SQUAD Goalkeepers: James Beadle (Brighton), Teddy Sharman-Lowe (Chelsea), Tommy Simkin (Stoke City) Defenders: Charlie Cresswell (Toulouse), Ronnie Edwards (Southampton), CJ Egan-Riley (Burnley), Tino Livramento (Newcastle United), Brooke Norton-Cuffy (Genoa), Jarrell Quansah (Liverpool) Midfielders: Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest), Jobe Bellingham (Sunderland), Archie Gray (Tottenham Hotspur), Hayden Hackney (Middlesbrough), Jack Hinshelwood (Brighton), James McAtee (Man City), Tyler Morton (Liverpool), Alex Scott (Bournemouth)

EXCLUSIVE Chelsea's new signing Liam Delap makes decision on England U21 duty amid Club World Cup clash

Liam Delap will not be named in Lee Carsley 's England squad on Friday for this month's Under-21 European Championship in Slovakia, as the striker is going to fly to the United States with Chelsea for the Club World Cup instead. The two tournaments clash this summer, though FIFA's expanded club competition takes priority over the UEFA event where the Young Lions will be looking to defend their Euros crown after winning it under Carsley in 2023. Mail Sport understands Chelsea have been speaking with the Football Association ever since it became clear they were winning the race for Delap's signature. His £30million move from Ipswich was confirmed on Wednesday night and the 22-year-old will wear the No 9 shirt under Enzo Maresca. Chelsea's first game in the Club World Cup will be on June 16 when they face Los Angeles FC in Atlanta. The final will be held on July 13 in New Jersey. It is believed Delap has the blessing of Carsley to go away with Chelsea, with the England boss understanding of his unique situation despite it being a blow to his own squad selection. Carsley will name the 23 players he is taking to Slovakia on Friday. Delap scored 12 Premier League goals for Ipswich as they were relegated to the Championship. Manchester United fought hard to sign him, while there was also interest from Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, Everton and Newcastle, as well as clubs in Italy, Germany and Spain, as his £30m release clause was considered a bargain. Chelsea secured him as they had made their interest clear in January and continued conversations with Ipswich ever since.

There is one Celtic star who Brendan Rodgers is happy to see buck the trend in bid to prove he has the chops

Brendan Rodgers will be pacing the living room and chewing his fingernails down to the bone over the next few weeks. Most managers deal with international breaks through gritted teeth but the June set of fixtures have the ability to drive club gaffers up the wall. Celtic gaffer Rodgers has eight stars off on national service when he'd much rather they were at home or lying by a pool with the feet up for a few weeks after a long, hard slog of a season. The Hoops already have Reo Hatate and James Forrest set for a summer on the treatment table, along with Jota who is out until 2026. Adam Idah and Liam Scales are on Ireland duty, Anthony Ralston with Scotland, Kasper Schmeichel will look to bounce back from Hampden heartache with Denmark, with Yang Hyun-jun and Viljami Sinisalo with Korea and Finland respectively and exile Luis Palma reporting for Honduras. Rodgers will keep keeping fingers crossed for his main men, but there is one player the Irishman might be glad to see in action this summer. Paulo Bernardo. The midfielder will finish off his time with the Portugal youth set up at the Under 21 Euros in Slovakia, which kick off next week. And the games against France, Poland and Georgia – with the prospect of more in the knockout stages – could be just what the playmaker needs to recapture some form. Bernardo has already made 28 appearances at under 21 and he could set a new national record if he plays the three group games. And these clashes could be just what the 23-year-old needs after a season that failed to catch fire. The former Benfica youngster turned his initial loan move into a permanent deal last summer for £3.5m and it looked a no brainer at the time. Bernardo hadn't always been a regular in his first campaign but he'd shown more than enough to suggest he was worth snapping up for the long term. There were goals against Rangers and a huge impact in the Scottish Cup Final. When Arne Engels checked in for £11m weeks later, it didn't seem like he'd be battling it out with the Belgian for a berth. It was Hatate who was the one whose future looked uncertain, with talk of several clubs in England and beyond keeping tabs. Twelve months on and the Hatate exit chat remains. But whether Bernardo is up to being the ready made replacement is more up for debate. There's no doubting his ability. Yet progress stalled over the last term. Bernardo picked up an injury in the Scottish Cup against Raith Rovers in February and while he was back within six weeks, he struggled to find top form and momentum. He had a big opportunity at Hampden against Aberdeen but failed to make an impression, with the direct running of season one replaced by sideways passing and drifting in and out of the game. The hook came in extra time but it could have been much earlier. Instead of scrapping with Hatate and Engels for a start, he's not got a job keeping Luke McCowan at bay. Bernardo can point to the injury after new year but even before then he wasn't getting much of a look in, apart from off the bench. More than half of his 44 appearances in all competitions in 2024/25 came as a sub, with just a couple of goals and three assists. Celtic need more. The drop off hasn't gone unnoticed, and former Celt and now permanent Partick boss Mark Wilson said: 'I have been quite consistent with Bernardo. When it was up for debate whether Celtic should sign him. I was probably one of the ones I didn't think it was worth the risk and the money. Not the risk, just the money. 'I didn't think he had done enough in big games. I get he went through that wee purple patch. He scored against Rangers. 'But you need to be more than that if you are playing in that Celtic midfield. You need to be more than just three good games on the bounce, and then just go non-existent for big games like the Cup Final.' Bernardo has enough in the locker to be an important Celtic figure but he needs to hit the ground running at the start of next season. And the foundations can be laid while he's on national duty in Slovakia.

Pep Guardiola in club-v-country row with England

Pep Guardiola has become embroiled in another club-v-country row with England after being asked to make James McAtee and Rico Lewis available during the Club World Cup next month. McAtee, 22, and Lewis, 20, were wanted by Lee Carsley for the Under-21 Euros in Slovakia as England look to defend their title, but Guardiola said he would prefer them to travel to America, questioning who would pay the players' wages. Guardiola was previously furious after John Stones returned injured from England duty just before important games for Manchester City last season. He also took aim at England Under-20s this season for sending back Max Alleyne with fitness problems after they 'pushed Max's limits'. He also hit out at the communication between England and clubs after Kyle Walker was injured on international duty. The Under-21 tournament runs simultaneously to the Club World Cup and has priority under Fifa rules. 'I know the manager of the Under-21s asked the club for both players to go to the Under-21s but I don't know the resolution right now,' Guardiola said. 'Normally when players go to the World Cup or European Cup we are already on holidays, so that is why they go and now the situation is here and they have to talk. 'I joke and I am so funny… I don't know who is going to pay the salary in these months, the national teams or the club if they decide they are going to the Under-21s. I don't know who is going to pay it. I would say, the players go with the club. They will talk with the sporting director and they have to decide what they want to do.' Guardiola was speaking before the England Under-21 squad was announced on Friday afternoon, and it does not include McAtee or Lewis. 'Foden is family' Guardiola confirmed Phil Foden will travel to the Club World Cup, which starts on June 18 against Morocco's Wydad SC and will see further group games against Al-Ain and Juventus. Foden has not been selected for England's seniors and says he needs to rest his ankle which has given him problems, while also revealing his off-the-field mental problems this season. 'Phil is family for us,' said Guardiola. 'He's a baby boy from the academy and becoming a star with us. We want to help him, that's the most important thing. 'He needs rest and it's going to happen now after Sunday. Step by step he is going to come back, that is what we want. I just want to help him. I don't care about his performance on the pitch, I want him to feel good and the rest will come in an easy way.' 'Not the Rodri we know' Rodri will also travel to America as he steps up his comeback from a serious knee injury suffered in September. But Guardiola has warned against him playing in every City match next season like he did before he was sidelined. 'We are really pleased he's back, really pleased for the reaction from our people to him,' said Guardiola. 'I am pretty sure he is so pleased for that but he's a long way to be what Rodri was. 'I guess it will be next season when he will start to be the Rodri, not in the way we have seen before the injury playing 70 games, playing every three days, I think it will take even longer for that because the experience in this surgery, we have always to be careful, otherwise you have muscular problems and this kind of stuff. 'But it is the first kind of step, for his mind, for his knee, but still is not the Rodri we know.'
