Nitin Gadkari Sandeep Anirudhan City-based mobility experts have raised concerns over Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar's recent proposal to the Union Ministry for a dedicated elevated flyover connecting Hebbal Junction to Kempegowda International the Deputy CM's letter tounderlines that a signal-free, dedicated flyover would drastically cut travel time for airport passengers, industrial freight vehicles, and daily commuters, experts say such decisions should be based on a scientific analysis of the situation. It is said that any more road networks in the city should be created only after a feasibility such large-scale boost to road infrastructure projects is likely to result in a surge in private vehicle usage.'All mass transit projects, metro or suburban rail, are facing challenges with deadlines. While these projects are terribly behind schedule, a series of road infrastructure projects are being announced by our Deputy CM. Such initiatives will only worsen traffic congestion in the city,' said a mobility Deputy CM's letter to the Union Ministry claimed that since the existing 35-km corridor from Hebbal to the airport is choked with traffic due to rising industrial activity and the emergence of commercial hubs, the new flyover could serve as a critical lifeline for the city's to, Convenor of Citizens' Agenda for Bengaluru and a mobility expert, the root cause of the traffic issue is lawlessness being practised by the decision-makers. He points to the 74th Constitutional Amendment Act, which states that every metropolitan area shall have a metropolitan planning committee to prepare a draft development plan. Bengaluru has been devoid of such a committee so say that the government keeps adopting the band-aid approach instead of pursuing holistic development. A flyover or tunnel is seen as a temporary solution that fails to address the root causes, allowing the underlying issues to persist and escalate over time.'We are fed up with the executives ignoring the constitution, the provisions for urban planning, master plan, capacitance of the metropolitan planning committee (MPC), etc, as a result of which the city is paying the price in terms of unplanned development. We don't need a panacea, we need a cure,' he said. He emphasised that planning must take precedence, with a master plan issued through due process, ensuring that only recommended projects are systematically undertaken. He added that the Union Minister should insist on Karnataka having an operative master plan, with an embedded transport plan, before any funds are disbursed to the state.

Salangai Naadham to feature artistes with disabilities

Disclosing this to the press here on Wednesday (May 7), SZCC director K .K. Gopalakrishnan said that every day one of the six programme slots would be earmarked for artistes with disabilities at the event featuring various folk/tribal art forms from different States. Alongside the event, food stalls and stalls displaying handicrafts and other products would also be set up on the SZCC campus. Stating that it had been decided to collect entry fee from visitors, he said that while ₹20 would be collected as entry fee per person, ₹30 would levied as parking fee for cars and ₹10 for two-wheelers. The decision to collect entry and parking fee was a sequel to the directions issued by the Union Ministry, which had instructed the SZCC, an autonomous body, to generate funds to bridge the gap in the funds required for the administration and conduct of programmes by the Centre. It had also been decided to hold similar events at Kallanai, Manora and Anicut areas in Thanjavur district and at Pudukottai and Mayiladuthurai districts during the same period in association with the respective district administrations as in the past, he added.

TN receives Rs 2,999 crore from Centre for MGNREGS
Chennai: Providing relief to lakhs of rural workers, the Union Ministry of Rural Development has sanctioned Rs 2,999 crore to Tamil Nadu under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) for the financial year 2024–25. This allocation ends months of uncertainty over the non-release of funds to the state. Of the total amount, Rs 2,851 crore has been earmarked for clearing wage liabilities. According to a recent communication from Sanjay Kumar, Director (MGNREGS) in the Union Ministry, approximately Rs 740 crore will go to Scheduled Caste beneficiaries, Rs 43 crore to Scheduled Tribe beneficiaries, and Rs 2,068 crore to other workers. A copy of this communication has also been shared with the Tamil Nadu government. So far, the state has received Rs 1,111 crore from the sanctioned funds. Meanwhile, arrears related to the material component stand at Rs 1,246 crore for 2024–25. The state government remains hopeful that the remaining dues will be released soon. The delay in wage payments caused significant distress among rural workers since November last year. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin repeatedly urged the Union government to release the funds, accusing the BJP-led Centre of attempting to dismantle the scheme, which he described as the "backbone and blood of the rural economy". The ruling DMK also staged statewide protests demanding the clearance of arrears. Frustration boiled over in several places. Residents of Thirumani village in Vellore district recently held a road blockade, while workers in Sathyamangalam, Erode district, declared a strike earlier this month, vowing not to resume work until payments were made. Tamil Nadu currently has around 91 lakh active workers from 76 lakh households enrolled under MGNREGS. Notably, 86 per cent of employment is provided to women, and 29 per cent of workers belong to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities. Each year, the scheme also covers about 1 lakh differently-abled workers. Meanwhile, the office of the State Rural Development Commissioner has circulated a proforma agenda to all district Collectors to be discussed at the Gram Sabha meetings held on May Day.
