One UI 8's updated Good Lock module makes home screen customization even more fun

Samsung gave several Good Lock modules a big upgrade with the release of One UI 7 earlier this year. In particular, the revamped Home Up module introduced many unprecedented customization options, including the ability to tweak the damping, stiffness, and friction of home screen animations and wallpaper transitions. With One UI 8, Samsung is making Home Up even better by letting you customize the app startup animation. The Home Up Good Lock module gained extensive animation customization options as part of its One UI 7 revamp, but it still lacked a way to tweak app launch animations. Samsung is fixing this limitation with Home Up's One UI 8 release. But that's not the only highlight of the Good Lock module's v17.0.00.28. It deeply integrates with the One UI Launcher, enabling you to bring up relevant customization options with a long-press on the app icon or home screen (via @tnemoroccan). Further, Samsung is improving the DIY Home Screen feature in Home Up with a new Alignment Guide Lines option. It will help you better align icons, widgets, and stickers for better symmetry. You can also edit grouped items and lock your customized home screen to prevent accidental changes. Plus, it's finally possible to hide page indicators if you are not fond of them. Another notable change: a horizontal scroll mode for the app drawer when you select the Alphabetical order mode. You can find the full release notes for Home Up v17.0.00.28 below. Supported devices: One UI 8 and above DIY Home Screen - Alignment Guide Lines: Guides for aligning items - App Launch Animation Settings: Animations for overlapping items - Item Group Editing: Easy editing with grouping and ungrouping - Item Edit Lock: Prevents accidental changes with a lock feature - Sticker Action Function: App integration and touch animations - Floating Toolbar: Joystick feature for easy home screen editing Home Screen - Page Indicator Hiding: Enables a clean home screen layout - Horizontal Scroll: Supports horizontal scrolling in 'Alphabetical Order' mode - Home Up Quick Access: Pop-up menu on home screen and recent apps Edge Panel - Launch Apps in Selected View Type: Full, split, and pop-up screen types Gesture Settings - App Launch Animation Tuning Supported If you use the Edge panel on your Galaxy phone, the Home Up module can now let you directly open apps from the Edge panel in split screen or pop-up view. Only compatible with One UI 8 Galaxy devices Home Up's One UI 8 update is available for download through the Galaxy Store. In case you don't see the update, sideload the APK from here (via @tarunvats33). Besides the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7, the Galaxy S25 series is the only other device to have access to One UI 8, albeit in a beta state. So, if you own another Galaxy device, you'll need to wait for the One UI 8 update to try the new Home Up release, as it's not compatible with One UI 7.

Finance Minister Nicola Willis wants answers over high butter price

The price of a block of butter is now 120% higher than it was a decade ago, according to Stats NZ. Finance Minister Nicola Willis will be asking dairy giant Fonterra about the high retail price of butter in New Zealand. Willis told RNZ's First Up programme this morning it didn't seem quite right that butter seemed to be cheaper in Australian supermarkets. The price of a block of butter is now 120% higher than it was a decade ago, according to Stats NZ. In the year to June, it was up 46.5% to $8.60 for a 500g block. At her regular meeting with the co-operative this week she would be discussing what gets added to the cost by retail brands, including Fonterra's Anchor, and at the wholesale level. Finance Minister Nicola Willis. Photo: RNZ "My frustration has been when you sometimes go on to an Australian supermarket website and see that butter appears to be cheaper there than in New Zealand, that doesn't seem quite right. So that's exactly the conversation I want to have. "They'll have the opportunity to set out their case." It was well understood the main driver of prices for dairy products was international demand and pricing, Willis said. "But competition at the retail level does seem to have an effect on price, because organisations like Costco choose to have a really low price point on that product to get people in the door and the ultimate winner of all of that is the Kiwi shopper. "So I'm talking to Fonterra about what they're seeing in terms of the supermarket pricing behaviour, what the margins are." In May, Costco Auckland's special pricing saw queues out the door. Federated Farmers dairy chair Karl Dean has urged retailers to lower prices quickly when costs go down, and said there was probably very little Fonterra itself could do. "To put in it in perspective, there hasn't been any new players onto the domestic market in the last 10 years in terms of butter, other than the likes of Westgold - Westland have got their very premium product," he told RNZ's Morning Report programme last week.

Progress on £14m Montgomery Canal restoration project

Wales Office Minister, Dame Nia Griffith, has been in Welshpool and Llanymynech to see how work is progressing on a major project to restore the Montgomery Canal. The scheme, which is being delivered in partnership by Powys County Council and Glandŵr Cymru (the Canal and River Trust in Wales), has received £13.94 million from the UK Government as part of its Levelling Up programme. Dame Nia viewed improvements that have been made to Y Lanfa, in Welshpool, the home of the town's library and the Powysland Museum, before visiting Wern, near Pool Quay, and then Llanymynech. At Wern, contractors working for Glandŵr Cymru are creating a new pond alongside the canal for protected species of aquatic plants and other wildlife. And at Llanymynech, work has begun on a new bridge which will take Carreghofa Lane over the canal, instead of through it. Wales Office Minister Nia Griffiths said: 'It's fantastic to see the huge progress that's being made to restore the Montgomery Canal and preserving our industrial heritage for generations to come. 'Funding from the UK Government has enabled this ambitious plan to be delivered, creating jobs, supporting the tourist industry, and restoring vital wildlife habitats.' Before seeing work on the canal restoration project, Dame Nia also visited Welshpool-based manufacturer CastAlum, which received a Business Growth Grant through Powys County Council last year worth £25,000. It put the money it received through the grant scheme, which was backed by £1.2 million from the UK Government's Shared Prosperity Fund, towards the cost of updating two of its die-cast machines, as part of a wider refurbishment programme. 'It was great having the opportunity to show Dame Nia around two projects in Powys last week which have benefitted from UK Government funding,' said councillor James Gibson-Watt, Powys County Council's Cabinet Member for a More Prosperous Powys. 'CastAlum was one of 71 Powys companies that we were able to support over the last two years thanks to the Shared Prosperity Fund, while the Levelling Up funding is helping transform the prospects of the Montgomery Canal, its ecology and the communities living alongside it.' Richard Harrison, principal project manager at Glandŵr Cymru added: 'It was fantastic to welcome Dame Nia to the canal to show her the work that's taking place to restore it. "We are making good progress on the restoration as we look to make the improvements that will ensure the sustainable long-term future of the canal so it can continue to benefit both people and nature.' The National Lottery Heritage Fund has also contributed £164,000 towards the cost of the work on Y Lanfa, while the Welsh Government put £140,000 towards the refurbishment of the canalside cottages on the same site, as part of its Transforming Towns programme. Work on Aberbechan Aqueduct, near Newtown, was also backed with a Historic Building Grant from Cadw. SWG Group, based in Welshpool, has almost completed the works on Y Lanfa. The library is expected to reopen in its usual home, on the ground floor, in September, while the Powysland Museum is likely to reopen, on the first floor, towards the end of 2025 or in early 2026. The library is temporarily based in the nearby Canalside Cottages.

Tipp legend hailed as 'some craic' as RTE kickstart build-up to hurling final

Tipperary hurling legend Joe Hayes has earned rave reviews for his showing on RTE's Up for the match this evening. The Premier County icon appeared alongside Cork hero Tomas Mulcahy in the early stages of tonight's program which begins the build-up to the All-Ireland hurling final that will be contested by the two sides. Hayes was in great form as he bantered with Mulcahy about their battles down through the years, and when Mulcahy mentioned Hayes' new set of teeth which he got 'from Turkey', Hayes responded by saying those Cork teams of yester-years had plenty of unofficial orthodontists who charged nothing for a spot of on the field dental work. The Tipp legend's appearance went down a storm with fans, who flocked to social media platform X to sing the praises of Hayes: "Joe Hayes is one gas man. Absolute beaut of a character! Up Cork tho, Joe," wrote one Rebel supporter. "My God,wouldn't you love to have a pint or two with Joe Hayes," posted another fan. "Joe Hayes is some craic," said another user, while Tipperary fan Shane Brophy reckons Hayes' fine form is a good omen of things to come on Sunday: "If we start tomorrow like Joe Hayes has started be in business." "As if Joe Hayes couldn't be any cooler he's repping a Dillon Quirke foundation jersey. Legend," wrote another fan. The jersey in question was a special Tipperary top with the Dillon Quirke foundation logo on the centre of the jersey. The foundation was set up in Quirke's name after the young Tipperary hurler passed away during a match with his club in 2022 due to Sudden Adult Death Syndrome. Between its inception and the end of 2024, the foundation had provided over 10,000 heart screening tests for people.
