Hurricanes hit by injury scare ahead of Super Rugby finals
Ruben Love and Asafo Aumua of the Hurricanes celebrate, 2024 Photo: PHOTOSPORT The Hurricanes could be without All Blacks hooker Asafo Aumua for the first round of the Super Rugby playoffs after he suffered an injury at training. The Hurricanes co-captain copped a blow to the knee at the team's training on Tuesday at the New Zealand Campus of Innovation and Sport in Upper Hutt. Asafo Aumua, right, is under an injury cloud. Photo: Photosport Aumua had to be transported away from training on a cart and the Hurricanes will now be sweating on his fitness ahead of Saturday's first round playoff clash with the Brumbies in Canberra. The All Blacks front rower didn't play in last Saturday night's 64-12 win over Moana Pasifika in Wellington due to concussion. The latest injury puts him in doubt for the finals. The Hurricanes were putting a positive spin on the injury. "I think he did a couple of runs over there and got tired and wanted a ride back," assistant coach Cory Jane said. "Hopefully it's not too bad." Last week's starting hooker Jacob Devery and Raymond Tuputupu are set to play if Aumua is ruled out. The Hurricanes name their side at 4pm on Wednesday.

Free health checks in Upper Hutt on Saturday
Thirty healthcare agencies are offering free health checks in Upper Hutt on Saturday. Photo: RNZ / Diego Opatowski An Upper Hutt medical centre is holding a day of free health checkups in an effort to make healthcare more accessible to the Hutt Valley community. Gain Health Centre has partnered together with 29 healthcare agencies for its 'Wellness Day' on Saturday at Ōrongomai Marae. A GP would be at the event for consultations and general check-ups. Other providers will be available for specialist care, including cervical screenings, blood and glucose tests, and diabetes, heart and gout education. Scheduled and flu vaccines would also be free for all age groups. "There are thousands of patients without a GP in Hutt Valley and many of the practices' books are closed due to low resources," Gain Health Centre practice manager Anna Guest said. She said with after-hours health services and hospitals overloaded, the challenges in primary care were the worst they had been in 20 years. "There is a large barrier with access to healthcare in our community which means many people are not getting health screenings and access to services, like vaccinations, when they need them," Guest said. "These are essential for early detection, diagnosis and prevention." Gain Health Centre is part of the Doctors Medical Centres network and Green Cross Health. The Wellness Day started three years ago when Guest, alongside Gain Health Centre's nurse lead, Hannah Bradley, were inspired to start the initiative while at a Green Cross Health conference. Guest estimated that hundreds of people showed up to last year's Wellness Day, and she encouraged more people to come along to this year's event. "Just come along for the day and talk to any of the agencies," Guest said. Guest said while times could be tough for some, all agencies wanted to support and improve the health of the community. "We are extremely grateful for the support Ōrongomai Marae has given us and the hard work everyone has done to bring this event together." Library Exhibition Turned School Roadshow Brings Upper Hutt History To Life For Local Students
Following its success during last year's Wellington Heritage Festival, 'Upper Hutt: City of Industry' continues to shine a light on an iconic period in the city's history. First hosted at the Upper Hutt Central Library, the exhibition recently set off on a tour of local secondary schools, inviting students to explore the manufacturers and trades which put the city on the map at the end of the twentieth century. Heretaunga College has been first in line to display the interactive exhibition, which comes with a suite of information panels and large-scale photographs from Upper Hutt's community archive as well as original artefacts and audio content. 'The exhibition features a specially programmed, original Telecom push-button phone, which essentially allows students to travel back in time. It plays oral histories from locals who spent much of their working lives contributing to this chapter in Upper Hutt's history,' says Libraries Manager Denise Clarkson. She adds that the community's input into the exhibition was significant. 'Our heritage staff were thrilled to see the generosity of long-time residents, who donated or loaned us authentic items and photographs. It's thanks to this active collaboration that 'City of Industry' was such a hit last year, and that our team were able to curate an engaging, multi-faceted exhibition.' The roadshow also provides historical context to a current major Upper Hutt attraction. Students will be familiar with the family-friendly Brewtown precinct, now a popular entertainment and event venue, and previously the site of the city-defining Dunlop/South Pacific Tyres factory. 'Our city's time as a manufacturing hub has a lasting impact on our community today,' says Mike Ryan, Upper Hutt City Council's Group Manager Community Services. 'The industrial boom forged a strong sense of local identity and place here. Encouraging students to learn about this important period is an opportunity to spark creativity, inspiration, and innovation.' Last week, staff involved in the curation and development of the exhibition led a talk at the National Digital Forum conference in Wellington, sharing their project with the wider culture, heritage, and arts sectors. 'Upper Hutt: City of Industry' is next scheduled to be displayed at Hutt International Boys' School.
