Using water from the UKP for his farmland in Kaggod village, Manganavar planted 3,000 saplings imported from Thailand across seven acres in 2021. Today, his orchard yields fruit all year, earning him more than ₹10,000 a day, and drawing farming enthusiasts from across the region. Speaking to TOI, Manganavar said his inspiration came during a visit to Thailand in 2011 while working part-time at an insurance company. 'The idea stayed with me, but my father and three brothers initially felt it was too risky. I kept researching and developing the plan while continuing with my routine work,' he said. BJP delegation meets Union Minister over raising Almatti Dam height to 524 m

Taking exception to an objection raised by the Maharashtra government to Karnataka's move to raise the height of the Almatti dam to 524 m from 519 m under the second phase of Upper Krishna Project, a delegation of BJP MPs from the State, led by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, met the Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil in New Delhi on Thursday. The delegation apprised the Union Minister of the factual situation and said that the move to raise the dam height is being unnecessarily opposed by the Maharashtra government. Terming the opposition condemnable, they told the Minister that as per the order of the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal, increasing the height of the Almatti dam is Karnataka's right. Later, addressing media persons, party MP Basavaraj Bommai said that consequent to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis leading a delegation of MPs to the Union Water Resources Minister opposing the State's move to increasing the height of Almatti dam, a BJP delegation, led by Mr. Joshi, met Mr. C.R. Patil and also Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna to convey that Maharashtra's objections to raising the dam's height are unwarranted and motivated. Mr. Bommai said that the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal II has approved raising the height of the Almatti dam to 524 m. 'Prior to this, a joint survey by the Centre and three State governments was conducted, including a hydrological study, which concluded that raising the dam will not cause flooding. Even during the 2005 floods, the Central Water Commission stated that there will be no flooding in Sangli and Kolhapur due to the dam. Therefore, Maharashtra's objection is unwarranted. And, it seems to stem from ill intent,' he said. Mr. Bommai said that the tribunal's order is equivalent to a Supreme Court decree and the right of Karnataka to raise the height of the dam as per the tribunal's order has been clearly communicated to the Union Minister. The government will act in accordance with the court order as the issue of gazette notification is pending before the Supreme Court, he said. The former Chief Minister said that the Union Minister told the delegation that nothing will be done outside the purview of the law. Mr. Bommai said that he will also urge the State government to use its legal resources to ensure that the matter is heard by the Supreme Court at the earliest so as to get the gazette notification published. The BJP delegation comprised Govind Karjol, P.C. Gaddigoudar and Ramesh Jigajinagi.

Karnataka seeks financial assistance of ₹11,122 crore to complete six irrigation projects

Karnataka has sought financial assistance of ₹11,122 crore to complete six irrigation projects, including 25% financial assistance for the Yettinahole project, in the State, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who also holds the Major and Medium Irrigation portfolio, said on Wednesday. The State has sought ₹804.66 crore for the Sonnatti lift irrigation project, ₹2,666.7 crore for the Upper Krishna Project's Indi branch canal, ₹3,000 crore for the Malaprabha canal third stage, ₹3,000 crore for the Ghataprabha right bank canal, ₹1,444.42 crore for the Chikkodi branch canal project, and ₹1,610 crore for flood mitigation and management at Bennehalla. 'Of the six, we have information that one has been approved. However, we have not been officially informed about it,' the Deputy Chief Minister told presspersons in Delhi. When asked about the Upper Bhadra project, he said, 'The Centre had sought revised estimates, which have been submitted. Based on that, we have sought more than ₹5,300 crore, which had been sought before. So far, we have spent ₹10,604 crore on the project. The Centre has told us that the money would be released, but we are not sure until the money is credited.' Regarding approval for the Mekedatu drinking water project, the Deputy Chief Minister said the State has urged the Centre to give an appraiser's report and approve the detailed project report. 'We have urged the Centre to provide a report to the court... The Jal Shakti Minister has promised to speak to the Tamil Nadu government.' On the Yettinahole project, Mr. Shivakumar said, 'We have appealed to the Centre to consider it as a drinking water project and provide a financial assistance of 25%.' The work in Tumakuru and Hassan had been stopped, and farmers on whose land the project work is being undertaken have been compensated, he said. 'However, the Forest Department claimed the land to be theirs. Hence, alternative land has been given, and the Forest Department, which had to provide the clearance certificate, has not yet given it. The department has asked us transport soil some 25 km away from the worksite.'

Construct a memorial to mark historic occasion of KRS reaching the brim in June, says CM

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has directed the authorities to construct a memorial to mark the historic occasion of the Krishnaraja Sagar filling to the brim in the month of June. Addressing a gathering at Brindavan Gardens after offering bagina to the KRS, Mr. Siddaramaiah said the KRS, which was constructed in 1932, had never reached its full reservoir level of 124.8 ft in the month of June. 'History has been created this year. The reservoir has reached its brim in June itself,' he said, adding that the data of reservoir levels was available since 1940. The construction of the reservoir, has a storage capacity of 49 tmcft of water, began in 1911 and completed in 1932. Since then, it has reached its maximum level for 76 years, he said. He instructed MLA for Srirangapatna Ramesh Bandisidde Gowda and officials of the Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Limited (CNNL) to take up work on the foundation stone for the construction of the memorial. The historic occasion should be marked because the KRS irrigates 1.85 lakh acres of land and serves drinking water to the people of Mysuru, Mandya, Bengaluru, and other places, he said. Recalling that the KRS did not reach the full reservoir level in 2023 when the Congress government came to power, Mr. Siddaramaiah said the Opposition 'superstitiously' began claiming that he, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, and the Congress government had brought misfortune to the State. Pointing out that it was nature that controlled rainfall, Mr. Siddaramaiah described the Opposition leaders as 'foolish and superstitious'. Mr. Siddaramaiah issued directions to the Irrigation Consultative Committees of all the reservoirs in the State - KRS, Tungabhadra, Hemavathi, Kabini, Harangi, Upper Krishna Project, Narayanapura, etc. - to take a decision to release water to the canals. All the reservoirs in the State are full and hence, water should be released to irrigate the agricultural fields. The Chief Minister said the State government has allocated ₹3,000 crore to the CNNL for developmental works this year. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who holds the Water Resources portfolio, said more than ₹2,000 crore will be spent on irrigation in the Cauvery basin area, out of which ₹1,000 crore for Mandya district alone. A large number of canals and sub canals will be taken up for repairs and modernisation, he said. Agriculture Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy said the custom of offering bagina at the KRS began during the tenure of former Chief Minister D. Devaraj Urs in 1979. After Urs, it was Mr. Siddaramaiah. Ramesh Bandisidde Gowda said the Chief Minister was in favour of holding the bagina at the earliest as the reservoir had reached its brim for the first time in its history. 'The programme was hastily organised in two to three days,' he said.
