PWD to rope in agency for DPR of 20-km elevated corridor over Munak Canal

Along the elevated corridor, the government also plans to create a recreational space, with open parks and walkways, as per the tender. PWD Minister Parvesh Verma announced this project last week, which is expected to cost Rs 3,000 crore. New Delhi, Jul 15 (PTI) The Public Works Department (PWD) is hiring a consultancy firm to prepare a detailed project report for the construction of an elevated corridor over the Munak Canal, officials said on Tuesday. According to the plan, a 20-kilometre elevated road will be constructed over the canal, connecting Inderlok to Bawana in northwest Delhi. The Munak Canal, a key water supply channel that runs through both Haryana and Delhi, was originally constructed to reduce water loss in the Western Yamuna Canal and ensure efficient water transport to the capital. Now, it is being seen as the base for a crucial elevated corridor to decongest the roads and reduce travel time. The elevated road will also connect to Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), further strengthening Delhi's outer ring road network and easing access to the northern and western parts of the city. As a section of the canal is under the jurisdiction of the neighbouring state, the Delhi government has applied for a no-objection certificate from the Haryana government. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced a Rs 24,000-crore infrastructure overhaul for the Capital. Addressing a press conference Wednesday, Gupta said major arterial roads — Rohtak Road (Punjabi Bagh to Nangloi), Ashram to Badarpur, and MG Road — have now been handed over to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). These roads will be upgraded into signal-free corridors with complete supporting infrastructure, including drainage, side lanes, and real-time monitoring systems. 'Earlier, multiple agencies led to fragmented execution and chronic waterlogging. Now, NHAI will be the single-point authority, with support from the Delhi Public Works Department,' she said. The press conference was held following a high-level meeting chaired by Union Road and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. The meeting was also attended by Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, Union MoS Harsh Malhotra, Delhi Cabinet Ministers, MPs, and senior officials from key departments. Gupta underlined several critical initiatives aimed at easing congestion and reducing pollution. These include: -A 7-km underground tunnel from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road -An elevated road from INA to the airport (eventually connecting Faridabad and Gurgaon) -Extensions of Urban Extension Road-II linking Alipur to Tronica City and the Delhi–Dehradun route. -A feasibility study is also underway for a tunnel from Sarai Kale Khan to IGI Airport. – A 20-km link road from Inderlok Metro Station along the Munak Canal to Sonipat has been proposed. Gupta said this new route would relieve traffic from Mukarba Chowk and benefit thousands of daily commuters travelling between Delhi and Haryana. The CM said the NHAI is currently executing road and transport projects worth Rs 35,000 crore across the Capital. This comes in addition to Rs 64,000-crore worth of completed works, covering 1,578 km of roads. Furthermore, Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for upcoming projects worth Rs 24,000 crore — spanning 128 km — have been prepared and await rollout. The NHAI has also sanctioned Rs 150 crore for the construction of Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and Under Bridges (RUBs) to remove bottlenecks near railway crossings. Gupta expressed her gratitude to PM Narendra Modi and Minister Gadkari, stating, 'With Rs 1.25 lakh crore worth of decongestion projects in Delhi, the Centre has shown unparalleled commitment to transforming Delhi into a clean, green, and world-class city.' The Chief Minister also highlighted NHAI's eco-friendly practices, such as using inert solid waste and construction debris from Delhi's landfills in road construction.

The plan spreads over 24-30 months and will focus on plotted developments, low-rise gated communities, and the region's first hospitality-branded villa project in these high-growth corridors. The company is also actively exploring joint ventures and joint development models to fast-track the expansion plan. The rollout is backed by catalytic infrastructure investments across the region. Sohna is now a key node in the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor with the new Gurugram-Sohna Elevated Road and proposed metro link. Sonipat is gearing up for a 26.5 km metro extension to Delhi and is directly linked to the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), set to be operational by mid-2025. Panipat's connectivity will transform with the Delhi-Panipat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), reducing travel time to the capital to under 45 minutes. "We've timed this expansion with precision--entering Tier-2 cities just as infrastructure, demand, and aspiration align. It's not just growth--it's strategic positioning for the next decade," said Gurpal Singh Chawla, Managing Director, TREVOC Group.
