Liverpool dealt transfer blow after Chelsea reach striker agreement over rivals

Liverpool are keen to add new faces to their side this summer with Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong among those who could be signed but the Reds have stumbled into an issue with another Bundesliga star Chelsea are not ready to shelve their transfer interest in Hugo Ekitike, despite agreeing a deal to sign Liam Delap. Liverpool manager Arne Slot had already identified the Eintracht Frankfurt striker, with talks progressing over a move. He was seen as a possible replacement for Darwin Nunez - the Uruguayan striker having been linked with an Anfield exit over the coming months. But it appears that a move to Merseyside is no longer the only option for Ekitike if he wants to make the move to England. ‌ According to Sky in Germany, the forward is being eyed by Premier League rivals Chelsea. It is suggested that the Blues are still pushing for his signing despite also being on the verge of sealing a deal for Liam Delap. ‌ Chelsea have decided to activate a £30m release clause written into his contract at Portman Road. Manchester United were previously credited with an interest but now appear to have fallen behind in the race for Delap. The former Manchester City forward has enjoyed a productive debut campaign with Ipswich having netted 12 goals despite the club's instant return to the Championship. Ekitike, 22, has also shone this term having netted on 22 occasions in all competitions for Eintracht Frankfurt. Speaking recently, former Frankfurt CEO and current board member, Axel Hellmann, confirmed there was Premier League interest in Ekitike. He said: 'I would love to have him at Frankfurt for another ten years, if possible. ‌ 'But we are realistic. He is one of the best high-potential players in Europe at the moment and he is only 22. That means he has a great future. 'He is a clever guy. He loves to listen and learn. I would love him to stay another couple of years. But the market is the market and half of the Premier League clubs are interested in signing him.' ‌ He added: 'Besides the Premier League, there are other markets for him that he has opened doors to with his performances. I think he would also fit in other leagues and with big clubs in Southern Europe.' Ekitike started his career with French side Reims before he made a big-money move to Paris Saint-Germain. He was loaned to Frankfurt last term, with the German club activating a permanent option in the deal. He still has four years left to run on his contract. Away from Ekitike, Liverpool look set to sign two of his Bundesliga colleagues. Jeremie Frimpong has flown to the UK to undergo a medical, while his Bayer Leverkusen team-mate Florian Wirtz has also been identified as a major target.

Kaizer Chiefs can sign these THREE Mamelodi Sundowns stars

Kaizer Chiefs are no doubt eyeing the situation at Mamelodi Sundowns, with some players likely to be released. The likes of Sipho Mbule, Neo Maema and Terrence Mashego are set to leave the club at the end of the season, many PSL teams are no doubt looking to pounce. Another player that has not settled at Chloorkip is talented attacker Kobamelo Kodisang. He completed a high-profile move to Sundowns at the start of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season, but only featured 13 times. If the winger feels his career is wasted at Sundowns, he might opt to join teams like Kaizer Chiefs or even Orlando Pirates. His agent, Mike Makaab, feels the 25-year-old was not given enough chance. 'We are worried about Kobamelo Kodisang and his struggles for game time because he's a very talented footballer,' Makaab told FARPost . 'And I think he hasn't been given a fair chance to compete for his position in the team, but we also understand that the players in his position are doing well, and the team is doing well. 'So we're going to look at all the best possible options for his career because, as I said, he's a talented player who should play regular football,' Maakab said. Kaizer Chiefs signed Gaston Sirino weeks after the Uruguayan was released by Sundowns. Amakhosi could pounce on Mbule and Maema if they leave the club in June. Sipho Mbule has been heavily underutilised by Mamelodi Sundowns this season and could be out of the club. The midfielder reportedly broke the Sekhukhune United code of conduct and was immediately put on ice by head coach Eric Tinkler. Mbule was on loan at the club, but as things stand, he might be without a team next season. Will Kaizer Chiefs pounce on the Sundowns star? Messi and Suarez each score twice as Miami rips Montreal

MIAMI: Inter Miami's Luis Suarez celebrates scoring his team's third goal with Lionel Messi during their team's Major League Soccer match against CF Montreal at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on May 28, 2025. - AFP MIAMI: Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez each scored two goals to spark Inter Miami to a 4-2 Major League Soccer victory over visiting Montreal on Wednesday. Argentine superstar Messi opened the scoring in the 27th minute and assisted on Suarez's first goal in the 68th minute for a 2-0 edge. Uruguayan star Suarez scored again in the 71st minute before Montreal's Dante Sealy answered in the 74th minute. Messi struck again in the 87th minute before Victor Loturi pulled one back from the Canadian club two minutes into stoppage time. Miami jumped to sixth in the Eastern Conference with seven wins and five drawn from 15 matches while East doormat Montreal slid to 1-10 with five drawn. Miami had lost twice and drawn twice in the past four matches. 'We had to take responsibility for the poor results. It's a matter of correcting to regain confidence,' said Suarez, who added the victory 'means a lot ... We have to continue to gain confidence in this kind of game.' Inter coach Javier Mascherano was concerned about injuries to defenders Gonzalo Lujan, Tomas Aviles and Jordi Alba. 'We needed to cut the negative dynamic. I'm happy,' he said. 'Unfortunately (the victory) is tarnished by the departure of Gonzalo, Jordi and Toto. 'In the case of Gonzalo and Jordi it was something muscular, which tomorrow we will see how far it is. In the case of 'Toto' it was the ankle that swelled in a stomp. Maybe he could continue. He wanted to continue.' Overall league leader Philadelphia won 2-1 at Toronto as the Union rallied late after Norway's Ola Brynhildsen scored in the 75th minute. Nathan Harriel netted the equalizer for the Union in the 86th minute and Germany's Kai Wagner scored the game winner two minutes into stoppage time. — AFP The Union improved to 10-3-3 for a league-high 33 points while none of the three clubs just behind them on the table could manage full points, second-place Cincinnati drawing 3-3 with visiting Dallas and third-place Nashville drawing 2-2 at fourth-place Columbus. – AFP

It doesn't take much these days to persuade a farming audience that Keir Starmer is a man of malign intent when it comes to agriculture. Infuriating tax changes in the Budget were followed by the overnight withdrawal of farm subsidies in England. Now, with rumours circulating of big cuts to farming budgets in the spending review, the Prime Minister has pretty comprehensively lost the room in rural Britain. Farmers are anxious about their future and with good cause. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad With no coherent policy for food production at the heart of this government, they risk being buffeted at every turn. For that, fairly or not, they will blame the Prime Minister. A gaucho moves cattle into a corral at a market near Melo in northwestern Uruguay. Beef from the country is now being sold by Asda in the UK (Picture: Panta Astiazaran) | AFP via Getty Images Fair prices for farmers The appearance of Uruguayan beef on Asda's shelves is just one recent case in point. When one farmer spotted this South American produce in a branch this week, he was quick to take to social media to denounce it as a betrayal. The Asda defence, I suspect, will be a simple one. They buy and sell on price; British beef at present is commanding record prices. Never mind that they have previously made a virtue of selling only British beef, only to row back when it became inconvenient. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Where Asda leads, it is only a matter of time before all the others will follow – if the government does not take seriously the need for stronger action to support fair prices for our farmers. The reason for historically good prices for British beef farmers is, after all, just as simple as Asda's excuses: supply is increasingly outstripped by demand. Over the last ten years, livestock numbers in the UK have fallen by 12 per cent. For some that is seen not as a bug but a feature. Livestock farming looks bad on the UK carbon emissions tally sheet. If we reduce beef production here in the UK and import from Uruguay instead, it looks better for our climate scores. We may consume just as much beef but the carbon emissions are for the government in Montevideo to worry about. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad A ticking time bomb The upshot is that the government and the auditors of our emissions get to claim that the UK has met its climate targets – even if the real world consequence is an increase in global emissions. We outsource our responsibilities, supermarkets protect their bottom line, and British agriculture – and the rural communities which rely upon it – withers on the vine. It is a system that, in the short term, works for everyone apart from local farmers. In the long term, it is a ticking time bomb for food security. What really annoys farmers most is not just the various hits they have taken in recent months, but the government's total inability to explain or defend them. When ministers are challenged on these issues, at best you get a random list of various initiatives to support rural communities, most of which are utterly irrelevant. It sometimes feels like the Prime Minister cares so little about rural Britain that he can't even be bothered to learn the script. If he wants to convince farmers that he has their best interests at heart, he could do worse than to take on the Asdas of this world – and stand up for our home-grown produce.
