NY Red Bulls vs Inter Miami — What to expect from Messi and Co. in their next MLS game?
Inter Miami needs to regroup fast, and the host New York Red Bulls want to keep rolling as they square off in Harrison, New Jersey, on Saturday night. Miami (11-4-5, 38 points) is coming off a lopsided 0-3 loss at Cincinnati on Wednesday, which snapped a five-game winning streak and six-game unbeaten stretch in league action. Lionel Messi, who is expected to play against the Red Bulls (9-8-6, 33 points), saw the end of his Major League Soccer-record streak of five matches scoring multiple goals. Miami, which will play its ninth match in a span of 36 days on Saturday, also announced on Friday that starting goalkeeper Oscar Ustari will not play against the Red Bulls. Ustari exited Wednesday's game in the 25th minute with what looked like an injury to his left side. Rocco Rios Novo replaced him and surrendered a pair of second-half goals. It's unclear how long Ustari will be out, but coach Javier Mascherano hinted it could be at least a few days. 'I wouldn't be able to say how long he'll be out. The doctors can probably say better as the next few days play themselves out,' Mascherano said. 'Hopefully, it's not a long absence.' 'I mean, five goals in the second half is crazy, something that doesn't happen for us often,' said Daniel Edelman, who scored the first of those goals. 'It was good to see that we wanted more. We wanted to get that third, fourth, fifth.' Emil Forsberg and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting followed Edelman's goal by scoring two apiece to fuel the comeback. The Red Bulls, who lost 4-1 to Inter Miami in their first meeting in South Florida on May 3, are on a seven-game unbeaten streak at home stretching back to a loss to D.C. United on April 19. Cameron Harper (knee), Lewis Morgan (thigh) and Serge Ngoma (thigh) aren't likely to play against Miami, which figures to be without Ian Fray (adductor), Baltasar Rodriguez (hamstring) and goalkeeper Drake Callender (hernia). Inter Miami to be without starting goalkeeper as it looks to rebound vs. Red Bulls
Inter Miami saw its positive momentum from a five-game MLS winning streak sapped by rival FC Cincinnati this past Wednesday. The club has a narrow, two-day window on the road to regroup from its 3-0 loss before it faces the playoff-contending New York Red Bulls at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, N.J. (7:30 AppleTV MLS Season Pass) on Saturday night. The Red Bulls are coming off a dramatic, 5-3 comeback win over New England during which they scored five second-half goals and erased a 2-0 deficit. Inter Miami will look to take down the Red Bulls shorthanded as coach Javier Mascherano confirmed on Friday that starting goalkeeper Oscar Ustari will not be available. Ustari, who suffered what looked like an injury to his lower left side, exited Wednesday's game in the 25th minute and was replaced by Rocco Rios Novo, who will get the start Saturday. Mascherano did not give specifics on Ustari's injury, but said he underwent testing for it and clearly would not be available against the Red Bulls. 'I wouldn't be able to say how long he'll be out. The doctors can probably say better as the next few days play themselves out,' Mascherano said. 'Hopefully, it's not a long absence.' Brazilian superstar Evander scored two of its goals for Cincinnati in the second half with Rios Novo in goal. On his second, he tapped home a rebound off a save by Rios Novo on a prior shot by Luca Orellano, but Evander tapped home a rebound. It's unclear how long Utsari will be out of action, but his absence could present an additional problem. It potentially leaves an Inter Miami squad dealing with the fatigue of a busy schedule thin at the goalkeeper position. Rios Novo is getting the nod ahead of recently-acquired William Yarbrough, who has yet to play for the team. And veteran Drake Callender is still not ready to return as he recovers from surgery for a sports hernia. Rios Novo played the final 65 minutes in relief of Ustari on Wednesday, and has done so twice prior - once against Columbus on May 31 in a 5-1 win and after Ustari was issued a red card in a 1-0 win over Charlotte on March 9. 'Rocco has played for us when Oscar wasn't here and when Drake has missed time so he's our second keeper with Drake out,' Mascherano said. 'It's his turn now.' Inter Miami (11-4-5, 38 points), which remained in fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings after Wednesday's loss, is about to play its ninth game across all competitions in a span of 36 days. After facing the Red Bulls (9-8-6, 33 points), Inter Miami will have a week before its next match July 26 at home against Cincinnati. But Miami's next four matches will come over a span of 15 days as it begins competing in the Leagues Cup on July 30. 'We all hate losing, and we had good momentum going so a loss like that has repercussions on your mood, but there's no time to dwell on it,' Mascherano said. 'We're going to go out there with who we have and try to finish this marathon we've been on and secure a win that will keep us in the hunt for the top spot in the standings.' Mascherano said despite the short turnaround he doesn't expect to make wholesale changes to his starting lineup, although he did consider the possibility of using a deeper rotation to balance getting his regulars rest and rolling with the best possible lineup. MESSI EXPECTED TO START He said Lionel Messi is expected to start against the Red Bulls 'assuming he feels good to go.' Mascherano said there has been no decision made yet as to whether Messi will play in the upcoming MLS All-Star Game next Wednesday in Austin, Texas. Messi ranks second in MLS in scoring with 16 goals behind only Nashville's Sam Surridge's 17, and has 22 goal contributions in 17 league matches this season. Messi had his record-breaking streak of five consecutive games with multiple goals snapped when he was held scoreless against Cincinnati. Messi and Jordi Alba were the two players selected to play for the MLS All-Stars in the event. 'I really don't have anything to say on it,' Mascherano said. 'I honestly wish they'd have the time to rest since we have a week off, but it's not my decision and as far as I know the club hasn't decided.' David Ruiz (hamstring) did not play against Cincinnati, but was listed as available, which could bode well for his availability on Saturday. Noah Allen (hamstring), Allen Obando (hamstring), Ian Fray (adductor), Baltasar Rodriguez (hamstring) did not play either, and Federico Redondo was out while dealing with an illness.

Lionel Messi scores on free kick to lift Inter Miami over Porto
ATLANTA: Lionel Messi connected on a free kick in the 54th minute to propel Inter Miami to a 2-1 victory over FC Porto in a Group A match of the FIFA Club World Cup on Thursday afternoon. After Porto struck first on Samu Aghehowa's penalty kick in the eighth minute, Marcelo Weigandt assisted on Telasco Segovia's game-tying goal in the 47th. Miami found its second goal in the first 10 minutes of the second half against Porto goalkeeper Claudio Ramos as Messi scored on the 68th free-kick goal of his illustrious career. Each team netted their first goals of the tournament after Miami tied Al Ahly 0-0 on Saturday and Porto suffered the same result against Palmeiras on Sunday. After VAR review confirmation, it was determined that Miami's Noah Allen committed a tripping penalty in the box against Joao Mario, leading to Aghehowa's penalty goal that was deflected by goalkeeper Oscar Ustari and in for the game's first goal in the eighth minute. Aghehowa, 21, had 19 goals in 30 Primeira Liga matches for the Portuguese side this past season. Miami knotted the score at one less than 90 seconds into the second half, as Weigandt's cross into the center of the box was finished by Segovia, who fired in the equalizing goal past a sprawling Ramos. Miami then continued its great start to the second half, as Porto's Rodrigo Mora's foul led to Messi's successful free kick — perfectly placed in the top right corner in the 54th minute.

Inter Miami goalkeeper Ustari credits Messi for making things easy
Soccer Football - Club World Cup - Group A - Al Ahly v Inter Miami CF - Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida, U.S. - June 14, 2025 Inter Miami CF's Oscar Ustari looks on IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters/Sam Navarro/File Photo REUTERS Inter Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari credited Lionel Messi's presence for helping him settle in at the club after joining the team last September, having played alongside the Argentine great since youth level. Ustari, who put in a stellar performance as the Major League Soccer side kicked off their Club World Cup campaign with a 0-0 draw against Egyptian side Al Ahly on Saturday, joined Inter Miami two months after his contract with Chilean team Audax Italiano expired. He said the decision to reunite with Messi was influenced by the club's ambitions and his long-standing friendship with his Argentine compatriot. "I wasn't retired. I joined ... because I was attracted by the club's aspirations," the 38-year-old Ustari told Reuters in an interview. "And obviously by sharing a squad with Leo again. And of course, Leo's presence on the team made everything easier." Inter Miami, co-owned by David Beckham, earned a spot in the expanded Club World Cup after winning the MLS Supporters' Shield. Ustari said he was delighted to be playing in the tournament after a career, which included stints in Spain, England, Mexico and Uruguay. "Having the opportunity to play in a Club World Cup made us all very happy, especially in my case, given that I'm someone who has had an extensive career," he said. "It's a reward for how well Inter Miami is doing things." While the world eagerly anticipated seeing Messi and Luis Suarez in the opening match of the tournament, it was Ustari who stole the spotlight and was named 'Superior Player of the Match', after saving a penalty and blocking eight shots. He said, however, that the credit belonged to his teammates. "We were all part of that award for best player. Maybe saving a penalty gave me the opportunity to receive it, but there were some very high points from my teammates who could have also been awarded it," he said. Ustari and Messi have shared a close friendship since playing together for Argentina's youth teams over two decades ago, a bond that extended into their senior team careers. They were in the same Argentina squad that won the 2005 Under-20 World Cup and clinched gold together at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Reflecting on their time together, Ustari said: "My memories with Leo are from youth training camps, the senior team, the titles we won, training sessions, etc." He added that Messi's personality has remained unchanged, describing him as "affectionate, respectful, and always competitive." "Because of who he is, he's achieved everything, and that's why he's the best player in the history of this sport."
