Yashasvi Jaiswal called 'confused' by ex-India cricketer after dismissal in Lord's Test chase: 'He was not comfortable'

Yashasvi Jaiswal's approach came under scrutiny from a former Indian opener after he was dismissed playing a poor pull shot during the chase in the Lord's Test against England. Usually a composed presence at the crease, Jaiswal looked uncharacteristically unsettled in the third Test. read more One of India's most reliable batters Yashasvi Jaiswal had a disappointing performance during the Lord's Test. Image: AP Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa feels a muddled approach from Yashasvi Jaiswal led to his early downfall against Jofra Archer during the Indian cricket team's chase in the Lord's Test as the visitors suffered a heartbreaking defeat by 22 runs. With just 193 runs needed to win in the final innings, India were seen as the favourites and Jaiswal, who averages 50.78 in 22 Tests, was seen as someone who could be a potential match-winner for Shubman Gill and Co. But the opener only lasted for seven balls and got out for a duck. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Jaiswal's dismissal came as he attempted an uncharacteristic pull shot against Archer on a short delivery that was pitched outside off. Generally, Jaiswal would have played a cut shot on such a delivery, a shot that he has mastered over the years, but he went for a pull shot against Archer as the pace outfoxed him, leading to an easy top-edged catch for wicket-keeper Jamie Smith. Uthappa feels Jaiswal was confused during Lord's dismissal Analysing Jaiswal's dismissal, former India opener Uthappa added that the opener never looked comfortable in the middle and it seemed like he was not sure what approach to take as the target was not so big. 'Yashasvi was genuinely not comfortable from the word go. You could see through the over that he was confused, so to speak, not clear. Maybe not confused, but just not clear as to how he wants to approach it. Because it was only 190 runs, I think he was half and half. It almost seemed like an afterthought, that shot,' Uthappa said on his YouTube channel. 'He (Nair) left it at the point of delivery. I don't think he watched it coming in and made that decision as the ball came to him. Until that point, that dude was batting solid, man. He is batting so well,' Uthappa added. 'Watching Jaiswal in the first over that he faced, he didn't look comfortable, he didn't look watchable. He has spent a long time at short leg for India, and he has come out looking a bit jaded,' he said on commentary.

What Was The Rush To Get 100 Before Lunch? KL Rahul Asked After Rishabh Pant Run Out

The run-out of Rishabh Pant on Day 3 of the Lord's Test between India and England turned the game on its head. India were in the driving seat at that moment but the run-out brought England back into the game. The Shubman Gill -led side was 248 for 3, trailing the Three Lions by just 132 runs. India could have easily taken a lead from that point but they ended up being bundled out for 387, a total that England scored in their first innings. At the time of the run-out, KL Rahul was on 99 and Pant wanted to give the strike to the batter so that he could complete his century before Lunch. This played a massive role in the dismissal. Even Rahul admitted after the game that his rush for the ton led to the run-out. Former India player Robin Uthappa has raised questions over Rahul and India's mindset. "Did anyone ask him why he deemed getting his 100 important before Lunch? There must have been a reason. Why was that a thought? Why was that deeply considered? If someone asked him why, we would have gotten to the bottom of this whole thing about milestones," Uthappa said on his YouTube channel. "I reckon the communication between Rahul and Pant would have been you know what, I think we need to take the attack on, we both are set. If I can get my 100 before lunch, then we can take the attack to them immediately after, and then you can hold fort Rishabh while I take the attack on and lets get these guys out of the game completely. That perhaps was the thought process," he added. Uthappa also pointed out how the personal milestone play a significant role in the career of Indian cricketers. He clamed the Indian media and critics for that culture. "I don't think these numbers would matter for an Australian or an English player in the long run. But for an Indian player, it matters. A hundred matters. It means a lot more because it means a lot more to the Indian media and critics alike. So hundreds and milestones are a big thing," said Uthappa.

Hockey stars get a kick out of playing football

Former India international hockey player Anup Antony has a simple motto. 'If you've mastered hockey, any other sport is easy,' he said. Antony lives by these words. He is now the player-secretary of Konkan FC, a team in the BDFA 'C' division football league here. Antony took steps to start this football team over a decade ago. Fifteen of the 18 players are either international or national level field hockey players, who joined the club purely for their love of football. 'In my younger days, I was a footballer. I used to play for my father's team. I've met a lot of hockey players who asked to join our football team. Konkan FC started with three hockey players, now we're up to 15,' Antony told The Hindu' on Friday. 'A hockey player can adapt to football. Hockey and football is similar in terms of formation, planning, and strategy,' Antony said. Antony was keen to make a contribution to football, and realised this dream when he started a football academy, BGF Sporting Club, four years ago. Hockey Olympian S.K. Uthappa is among the most popular names in Konkan FC. 'I just love playing football here, but I cannot give it my all because I have to worry about my professional hockey career,' Antony, who represents Indian Oil in the hockey domestic circuit, said. 'As a hockey player, this comes easy. It's the same concept - pass, make the run,' Uthappa said. V.S. Vinaya is the other player in the team who has represented the Indian hockey team. Noel Robinson, Mohammed Naeemuddin, Govind Raj and Praveen Kumar are some of the players who have represented the Karnataka hockey team. On Friday, Uthappa turned hero with a hat-trick, starring in Konkan FC's 5-0 win against Jsports FC. Konkan FC, the team to beat this year, is on track to achieving promotion.
